I can't believe the vet didn't pick up on this sooner. Lethargy, and lack of appetite, should have rang a bell for this very common disease. That poor Goldie is lucky to have survived! Thanks for sharing Nanook. Anyone with dogs should be aware of this!

Definitely scary for dog owners that fish.  I had an old dog that in his youth loved to fish himself and was successful twice.  First time he was very sick and almost died.  The second time the vet said he'll be fine and wasn't lying.  He was building an immunity to it.  It barely phased him.  Dog did what he loved and retrived everything.

I read somewhere that if you expose a dog to this parasite early in its life (after puppy status) on purpose, but immediately have vet approved treatment on hand to stablize it, then the dog should be good for life against it. 


I'm not going to test this theory on my dogs though.   :-\
