I am looking for a source of lead molds for making irons etc.
I really want a "crippled herring" type mold in the 3-4 oz range.
I googled it but found a lot of bass and crappie .....crap :-\
Thanks for any and all help here fellas (and fellarettes ;))

I ordered a 3 and 4 oz swimbait mold from "Do-it" molds.  It showed up in less than a week.  They do have a "Iron" style mold, I believe they call it a butterfly or flutter mold.  I almost bought one but liked the flexability of the 3 and 4 oz swimbait heads.

do-it does seem to have a good line of molds....but not the "crippled herring" style I am looking for.
Molds for simple plastic jigheads, diamond jigs, and spoons I can get locally.

You can make your own molds from an existing lure.  I wouldn't get in the  lure making biz with your copies but for rec use its allot cheaper.   I cant find it right now (link) but for $50-60 you can get enough material for about 6 diffrent blank molds.  or you can get some Sculpey ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sculpey ) and design something completely new and original, make a mold from that, patent the design AND concept, then sell it ;)

You can make an exact copy using the www.makelure.com silicon mold system. Make a one or two piece mold of the lure you want to copy then bend some wire for the hook hanger and lure eye and get to pouring! Lots of videos on the website and check their forum for more detailed questions.

While you can make an exact copy of the shape, many lures fiddle with the distribution of weight within a lure.  You may need to experiment to get the action you are looking for.

I am really not that much of a technical man. just looking for a cheaper alternative to buying the spendy crippled herring.
Is it more cost effective to make or buy lead lures? Paint, wire, hooks? I don't worry too much of perfection, cuz when the blacks start biting...they hit near anything.

You seemed to have answered you own question here.   If your looking for a cheap alternative to costly lures AND quality is not a big issue , then Yes making them is wayyyyyyy more cost effective.  (provided you plan to make at least 10-15)
