I refuse to let winter weather prevent me from kayak fishing, so I went kayak ice fishing today on Salmon Lake in western Montana.

A northern pikeminnow, formerly known as a squawfish.  About eight inches long.

When fishing on lakes during the open water seasons, I prefer to use a pedal drive kayak, and I do all my lake fishing from a 13' Revolution.  However, the Mirage Drive doesn't function on ice and snow, so I have to use my paddle kayak, a 13' Trident, for ice fishing.  I think that Hobie is missing an important market here, which is kayakers who want to be able to use their Mirage Drive kayaks for ice fishing.  I think that Hobie should develop a miniature snowmobile-type track which is pedal powered and goes in the drive slot of Mirage Drive kayaks, and a ski with ice runners which replaces the rudder, and can be used to steer the kayak on ice and snow.  YOO HOO!  Is anybody out there at Hobie listening to this excellent suggestion?

Good use of a trash/predator fish.I used squaw fish that I caught for bait on the Columbia for catfish this past summer. Turns out they love them to.

OK I'm confused.  Are you essentially scooting your kayak over the top of the ice, or is it thin and breaking as you go?  It's not completely clear from the picture.

In the picture, I'm sitting in my kayak while fishing through a hole in the ice.  The ice was 6 inches thick, topped with about two inches of water-soaked slush.  I loaded my ice fishing gear in the kayak and towed it over the ice like a sled.

Awesome.  I pretty sure your good for AOTY points with that set up! :)

Uh no.  I was publicly admonished and told the one unwritten AOTY rule was you enter a fish caught through the ice in your kayak it'd be worth MINUS two times the point value.

Apparently I was not the first to try. Hahaha.

Frickin freezing rain here...seriously. This sucks. I'd prefer 15deg over this....

It was done long ago when there were like 11 of us playing.  But these days, do you really want to be "that guy"?   ::)  I didn't think so ...
