Does anyone else use the SH HX 890 radio?

I splurged and purchased one. Was very happy with it for the 2 outings it went on. Now it is dead and won't turn on. I am convinced it is the charging cradle.

Doesn't it have an adapter to run on a bunch of AA batteries?  That would make it simple to rule out a problem with the radio itself.
I expected the worst, but it was worse than I expected...

Well.... Looks like I may be incorrect in thinking it is the charger.

Not sure what the voltage is supposed to be, but it is getting 10.2 volts to the charging prongs.

I got an HX890 ~2 years ago, and maybe a half year in it also quit charging. I suspected it was the charger but never confirmed w/ a multimeter.

Now I just load it with AAA batteries.

As far as I can tell the radio is not good for my needs. It burns through juice -- just this weekend it died after 6 hours on the water, starting from a fresh set of batteries.

I wish I'd returned it when it was under warranty. I won't be getting another.

I have one, I need to "rock" it in the cradle until I see the charging sign come on.  Just a poor connection I guess.

Decided it was too much radio for my needs so got one of the lower models which better suits what I need a radio for, talking to you guys and the coast guard.

When you put it in the charger does the charging symbol come on? I have a HX870 and I have to clean the contacts on mine when they get dirty or it won't charge. I put a coat of dielectric grease on them to keep them clean longer.

No, mine gives no indiction that it is connecting to the charger.

Try cleaning the contacts on the radio maybe.

I have an HX-870 that does the same thing when on the charger - no lights, no beeps, no nothing.

No, mine gives no indiction that it is connecting to the charger.

Mine is working flawlessly for three seasons now. I really like this radio. I believe when you use AA batteries the run time may be decreased as opposed to the stock lithium battery.

I also have the HX890 radio - it has been working very well for me for 3 years and I have had great battery life from the stock lithium battery. I am sure AA lead acid batteries would have lower life than a rechargeable lithium.

The troubleshooting suggestions offered by others seem like great places to start. You can get a cheap multimeter at HF....just don't use it for utility work and you should be fine. Don't let the magic smoke escape!

I hope you are able to revive your radio. Good luck.
