Title: Ocean salmon 2021
Post by: onefish on July 02, 2021, 02:21:27 PM
Got out at PC today on a easy launch but nasty ocean west of the cape.  Stayed in shallow and hit 2 nice sized hatchery coho.  Looks like things are starting to pick up.  Last week there were few salmon around.

Use this thread to post your 2021 ocean salmon success, details and pics.

Wow, congrats! Waves look too nasty for me this weekend but looks like things should calm down by next week. What did you get them on?

Nice work Onefish, there will be a group over there next Wed looking to fish before the ORC.

Way to get at it Onefish! The bit I've been able to get out near Depoe the last couple weeks, it's been nothing but wilds for me. This wind has been bruuutal  :-\.

It’s been salmon limits for anyone who tried the past 5 days in PC.  Ocean has been a bit bumpy, but doable and getting better this week.

Jed, maybe I’ll see you on the beach before ORC

I plan on getting out to PC for the first time this upcoming Friday. What setup for salmon do you guys use? (I assume it's trolling technique) Is it same as in Columbia river? What depth? Do you use spinners or herring? Please advise a newbie or point to a thread that I haven't found yet.

I cheated on my kayak and went out in an aluminum boat on Monday and it was a little rough for my liking but we gave it a go. In about 1-1.5 hours we had 7-8 take downs of those only a handful stuck a couple we lost at the boat and we ended up with 1 clipped coho before I got to feeling pretty bad and we called it a day. Herring, triangle flasher, 6oz of lead and maybe 20-25' of line out. People were catching them on everything (spinners, superbaits, spoons, hoochies) it really didn't matter much what you were using.

When you own both kayaks and a powerboat it is like spending time with your children.  You need to spend time with each of them.  It's not "cheating" on your kayaks...

Fresh salmon tastes just as good caught from a powerboat as a kayak,  nothing cheating about having it for dinner.

My first coho ever, first kayak salmon ever, and first salmon not fishing with a guide.

PC, bout 1/2 mile due West of the rock, about 10' deep in 120' of water.

360 flasher and 5" jointed herring imitation swimbait.

Got the two blacks on the same setup.

Just FYI...
I had an invite to go out on a powerboat, out of Depoe yesterday.
I took a raincheck so I could do PC today.
Turns out the 5 guys on the powerboat all got coho limits. Don't know how far out they went...

Smokin' hot bite NW of Government Point the last few days. Yesterday (7/8), I found them at the 200 ft contour. They were biting everything. Lucked out with a bonus Chinook among the coho horde. Trolling Brad's Cut Plug with 25-30 ft on the line counter, though I had several fish grab it with only 5-7 feet of line out. Scattered schools of green label-sized herring, 53 degree water.

Went out again this morning with a few other guys, and we found the coho at the 150 ft contour. Again, super hot bite. We all came back with limits of coho.

Best ocean coho bite I've ever experienced! Bummer that the wind's picking up for the rest of the week.

Awesome report, Clayman!

The bite wasn't hot at PC yesterday. Fish were scarce for the most part. Luckily I found a scum line at about 180 ft that was holding fish and limited soon after that. Both fish hit a hoochie spinner behind an in-line flasher.

Sorry for the late reply, I am just now seeing this after a busy work week and weekend at the ORC but we were fishing 60-80' of water. They were in tight to the bar/jetty where we were fishing down south.

Got out today (7/19) for salmon out of N Fogarty. First time I've been able to get out after them this year. It was one of those Murphy's law days. My drag died on my line counter and I managed to break off my downrigger ball. Luckily I had a spare spinning rod and a few 10 oz balls or I would have just had to turn around and go home. But the fish were there! I released 3 nice wild fish, lost a few more and got two solid keepers by 9. It was a great day! Beautiful flat calm ocean,
lots of fish around. I got my fish from 120 to 130 fow. But I saw some nice schools on the way in around 100 fow. Brads cut plug, no flasher 25 to 30 pulls with 10z of lead.

Today’s report is a lot like yesterday.  Water temperature holding at about 49.5, and plenty of salmon around at all depths.   Most are finding them at 120 ft or so.  Same rig as yesterday flasher and herring.  Good luck!

Relented today and hopped on a buddy’s dory.  Conditions remain so good for salmon fishing in the ocean at PC.  Whacked 3 solid keeper nooks and released a few shorts.
Water was slightly cooler but still in the good range.  Lots of sand lance around like last year.

Clayman and I went out off Fogarty Creek last Friday (7/23).  Coho were scattered from 120 to 200 FOW with no discernable pattern to when and where they would bite.  The water was a slightly turbid brownish color with about 4 to 5 ft of visibility.  We paddled like crazy, zig zagging between depth contours to find salmon and also to fight the strong current pushing from north to south.  We ended up with 1 keeper coho each.  I also released two small wild chinook and caught my limit of black rockfish in about 10 minutes flat.

Tight lines all.

I also noticed on Friday at PC that the north south current was much stronger than normal.

Saturday at PC was a total bust. Water temp dropped to 46 degrees near shore. The dory boats struggled to find the coho.

My buddy and I ended up going on Saturday hoping to catch a short window before deteriorating weather and got some schooling from the ocean. We trolled at 110 FOW and I picked up a nice coho after about an hour. We were a bit surprised not to see any kayakers trolling for salmon, most of them (around 10) were hanging by the NW reef bottom fishing. At around 9:30 we decided to head back in as the forecast predicted wind picking up earlier than usual. By the time I got to my crab pot (which took a long time) the wind was howling so I sorted crabs asap and headed back in. What I noticed is the wind and current drifted us very far south while we were dealing with crab pot. It was also foggy the whole morning and waves picked up to some serious heights. It was a looong time before we reached the shore. Things got a bit better once we approached the rock from south side and landing was smooth. So yes I can confirm the current was very strong. Seeing how dory boats were struggling in those 6-7ft rollers I am very confident in how the Outback handled. I was never at a point where I felt it would flip. Nevertheless, it was a long and wet pedal to the shore.
Moral of the story if the weather is ideal drop everything and go fishing. (which was Wednesday)
Now, you guys mention the water temperature factor for salmon fishing. Can someone explain it to me please as I am a relative newb.

Easy limits out of Fogarty this morning. We got into a few fish really quick at 60 FOW, but had the most action at the 130 foot contour. Brad's Cut Plug in your favorite color with 15 to 30 feet of line out made for easy fishing. Seemed like a 50-50 split of wild to hatchery fish. Water ranged from 50 to 52 degrees at the surface. Not much bait on the sonar, but both of my fish were stuffed with crab larvae. My friend James and his 14 year old daughter even scored limits from their tandem Hobie.

What an amazing coho season!

My two keepers were the typical hatchery coho size, but a buddy fishing with me landed a 12 pound hatchery fish. And my other friend and his daughter both landed 9-10 pound keepers.

Late report for Sat and Sunday at PC-  Saturday was sporty at the launch and landing, lots of surfers in the cove and super foggy coming in.  But water had warmed up to around 57, and there was a decent salmon bite.  Landed a few larger native coho, and a 12 lb Hatchery hen nook and called it a day.

Sunday was a better launch, with smaller surf.  Ocean cooled to about 54 and fewer salmon in the normal trolling areas near shore.  Headed west to look for some fishy water and with the fog fished the gear fairly shallow.  Got in to a few coho out near 140-150 ft. Had a violent takedown in 150 fow, and battled a large chinook for about 20 minutes after she proceeded to go straight down to the bottom.  Seems the bigger fish love the more vertical fight.  After pulling the beast up from the depths it was pretty gassed and not difficult to net.  29 lb hen with serious girth!  Had  a huge horse herring in its gut.

Quick report from yesterday the 21st at PC - a bit of a late launch after watching the break for a bit, waves were stacked up at low tide with not much of a break and looked a bit stormy.  But, the forecast called for light winds, and the recent fog was not a factor.  Decided to go for it and just plowed through the break to find gorgeous glassy conditions just outside the cape and 53 degree water.  The coho were all over north and south  of the rock, 50 - 80 fow.  Most dorys based on radio chatter were out at 200 with scratchy fishing.  Picked up bonus 20 lb chinook while sorting through the coho.  Just using my standard flasher n plug cut setup.  Did not have a lot of bait so I did switch to a hoochie after a while.  This week ahead should be good fishing!

Hell yeah, great fish Roger! Can't say I see many salmon reports come out of Sunset Bay.

A handful of us hit up Fogarty yesterday. No swell at all, though the south wind put up a little chop. Had to push through an impenetrable wall of jellies at the 100 ft contour before they thinned out around the 150 ft mark. Out at the 180-190 ft contour, we marked several bait balls. Despite the favorable conditions, the fishing wasn't as lights-out as I was expecting. Fish were kinda scattered around. Still, I boated five coho, four of which were clipped. Kept the two biggest ones. Blue Hawaiian Brad's Cut Plug, 10 oz weight, 30 ft on the line counter worked for me.

On the way back in, we hit the inside reef for some rockfish. Easy peasy rockfishing. Landed a surprising number of blues and deacons, to the point where they outnumbered the blacks. They were a welcome surprise, as blues/deacons are two of my favorite RF for the table.

That'll about wrap up the coho select season for me. Helluva season, best I've experienced since I started fishing it in 2017. Looking forward to the non-select season next month!

The stars finally aligned for a Halloween ocean chinook at Pacific City this year.  Found a nice 13lb hen in close with a lot of bait around.  Pretty immature eggs, wonder where this hatchery fish was headed.  It was a pretty good season all in all.

Very nice Onefish, way to close out the ocean season! Maybe that fish was headed for Elk or Chetco? Those systems get some late-returning fall fish.

Agreed, it was a helluva season for ocean salmon. Coho was insanely good, but Chinook was also great with an incredible grade! Never saw so many high 20-low 30 pounders landed by kayaks as I did this year. Crossing my fingers for a repeat season in 2022!
