Hello! Long time lurker here looking to finally make the jump into yak fishing this summer. I'm based out of Portland and wanting to get my feet wet in Tillamook bay, practice self rescue techniques, acquire all necessary safety gear before attempting to launch from the surf and fish the rock at PC. Looking forward to meeting some of you out on the water!

CB, you are on the right track.

I would suggest your first round of self recovery be done near shore in a calm lake. Cold water shock can and will change your ability quickly. If you can't get back on board, you are just a quick swim to shallow water, or shore itself.

Safety gear includes emersion gear and proper PFD.  You will want to have all of this before playing in Tilly Bay.  Tilly Bay has five cold rivers pushing through it, and backwashed ocean, it can still kick you ass bigly.

Insane is absolutely  correct. Recovery practice is  best to be started in a pond or warm lake. Great practice and no worries of being sucked out or pushed o to rocks or like he said, the cold water shock is truly a factor.

Thanks all!

Yep, I failed to mention, but I'm planning to go to Hagg Lake once it warms up a bit to do the self recovery practice. In the meantime working on getting my gear in order!

Gimme a holla when you are about a week out from hitting Hagg. I live 10 mins from there and need to get out and do some test n tune on some of Hobies before hitting the salt myself.

I'll bee your cheering section.

Sounds good! I actually just picked up an old Outback on the cheap and was hoping someone with experience would have a look over it with me

If you can haul it over to FG, I'd be happy to look it over and see if there is any pressing repairs needed. Do some tuning as needed.

That'd be awesome! I will give you a heads up next time I'm headed out that way towards Hagg.

Welcome to the NWKA CB.  Great group of people here sharing their knowledge.  It's been a while since I have done a self rescue practice and I should take some time this month for a dry (wet really) run.......  Good luck with yours.
