Title: Yaquina Bay herring are in
Post by: Clayman on February 20, 2018, 06:59:04 AM
Took us a little while to find them, but once we did, we loaded up the coolers.  They're hanging underneath the floating docks in the boat basin near Englund's, north side of the bay.  Mostly near the bottom in 20-30 FOW.  We also heard of success at Sally's Bend in the afternoon as the outgoing tide kicked in.  Most of the herring are blue-label, but there's a nice mix of green and purple label in there as well.  Get on em while you can!

How long do they tend to stick around?  I cant make it until SAturday but it looks like a worthwhile trip.  Are you just using a sabiki rig tipped with shrimp?

I'm not sure, but I imagine they'll be around for at least another couple weeks.  No need for bait on the sabiki.  We used the standard white/flashabou sabiki rigs with size 8 hooks, and they worked plenty fine.  We had several 'five at a time' hookups, with all five hooks pulling up a herring.  I'd pick up the sabiki rigs before you get to Newport, they're selling out at most of the local shops.

Man! Wish I could make it over this weekend. It would be awesome to get over there for some herring and night fishing this weekend. The wife just reminded me today that it’s our anniversary this weekend...  :'(

Sounds like a great time to spend the weekend at Newport to celebrate your anniversary.  And what would an anniversary be without fresh caught fish.

I really want to go do this, and mix in a few rockfish or perch. Just looked at this weekends weather for Newport. YUK!!!! Winds up to 35 knots!

There is another run later. Maybe June. bb2fish knows this fishery.

In addition to the horrible weather, the Newport Seafood & Wine Festival is this weekend.  There'll be a lot more traffic and congestion than usual.  I don't believe herring are worth all the obstacles.  Wait for the next weekend!

Thanks! Yes, this is a good weekend to stay away from Newport!

Nice haul on the herring, Clayman.  Dang, wish I could get out for some bait paddling-it's really fun to catch them from the kayak.

They usually spawn for a 3 week window in the winter then schools of herring are in the bay most of the summer. Spawners are typically larger (purple black and blue grade). Summer seems to be the smaller grades.

Just make sure if you're fishing from the docks that it's permitted - a lot of public docks are posted no fishing.  The pier is public, therescalso a bayfront "pier" behind the coast guard garage. And of course kayaking you can go anywhere to find them. Spawners are typically near the piers and docks. Summer schools are in the bay.

Is Yaquina the best place to go, or do bays closer to Portland such as Tillamook get a spawn too?
