I'm from Montana, but have relatives (my dad, two sisters, and their respective spouses) in the Salem/Corvallis area.  I'd like to visit them at a time of the year when I can also do some salmon, sturgeon, and/or ocean fishing in the area.  What are some good times of the year to schedule a fishing trip?

Sturgeon are thickest in numbers in the Willamette and Columbia during the colder months of the year.  I'd say pretty much any month with an "R" in it.  Doesn't mean you won't find them there in the summer, they are just a bit harder to find and smaller on average.  I've taken family out and caught sturgeon in June but not many big ones.

Chinook salmon starts happening in the ocean as early as June but really picks up in July.  By August there are fish pretty much everywhere along the coast in the ocean, as well as some coastal estuaries like the Columbia River estuary (Buoy 10) and Nehalem bay.  September is sort of a transition between summer salmon seasons and fall salmon seasons on the coast but there are plenty of fish all throughout the Columbia River during this month.  October is when many of the coastal estuaries will have salmon in them and while there are still some fish left in the Columbia River, most of them have moved on up river.

Coho show up in strong numbers to the Columbia River estuary and other coastal estuaries in September and most will make their push through the river through October and into early November.
