Allen just knows how to get me postin' up. ;D
I've caught a 23 or 24 pound ling each of the last several years, and I've released a few of them. I now have a policy of always releasing them that big - there's so much head on those things, and they're usually females and the most prolific spawners.
-

First pic ... fat 44 inch ling.
Second pic ... skinny (and wormy) 43 inch ling
Third pic ... low 40's ling coughing up a 4-5 pound salmon. Those are 10/0 hooks and I was using an 18" greenling as bait. I don't know how that ling could have eaten all that. But it didn't get that big by fasting. Notice it is hanging by a thread on the trailer hook. It took an easy tug to pop her off, but not until I snapped the pic.
Fourth pic ... Troy (Yakonthefly) with 44 inch ling.
Fifth pic ... Troy showing off.

Those are some nice Lings! I've gotta get me one of those!

Speaking of throw back ling size.... Where do ya draw the line?
Do you go ahead and keep your first ever 25lb ling, and then release anything that size later?
The largest I have ever caught was 36lb right near the rock at PC back in 1994 from a friends Dory. Took forever to get that pig to the surface. The mouth was big enough to stick your entire size 13 shoe in sideways. I forget how long it was, but we had meat up the wazzooo from that fish. Doubt I'll ever see something that big again out of a kayak in Oregon. :'(

But it's quite attractive. I love those golden ones. :)

I don't try to set standards for others, and I kept plenty of lings over 20 pounds before I started releasing the biggest ones. I also do lots of video and pics, and I enjoy handling large lings. So I can document, including weights and measurements, and let them go and have even more fun. Releasing a big fish is a great rush and something others admire - I don't mind the lack of humility in that. :)
-
My best Yak Ling so far...31.25 inches, i don't have a scale so have no idea how much it weighed, sure was tasty!!

Totally agree. I love the coloration in the golden lings. Awesome.

They don't even give you the choice in WA. Max size limit is 40". And I like it that way.
-Allen
-
I would be all for that in Oregon too. I would see no problem with the max even being 36inches. I would even support bumping up the lower limit too, maybe 26 or 28.. Anything in that window is a quality sized good eating fish.

You know that will never happen, it makes way too much sense....But we can do it ourselves, I'm gonna CPR all Lings and cabs this weekend and just keep a few blacks. Got way too much fish in my freezer already...
-
CBY.... I have some freezer space if ya need it. just got to come up here to use it. ..
-
I raised my personal ling minimum to 26inches and might just bump that to 28. Under 26 they just don't seem to have the size (decent filets, I fish because I love to eat fish, and do, at least 3 times a week) to justify killing one. A "jumbo" black has about the same about of meat as a barely legal ling
-
I would support that slot limit down here too. Killing big lings is mostly an ego stroke - the smaller ones do eat better, IMO.
Here's a few movies I made with some ling releases. Hope you don't mind me cluttering the "big fish brag board" with my flicks, Al. ;D

Just recently caught my best ling at PC. Ended up being 14#, 36".
I too would be for some kind of limit on the high end.

My personal thoughts, knowing what I know now... 36" seems the perfect size, so anything larger than 40 will be a CPR only, and perhaps an official length and weight with who ever is fishing with me... The only other way, would be a World Record.
I prefer to keep smaller fish, they just taste better. Tastiest Halibut I ever ate was a 12 lber last year on Montague..
That 44" Ling in the pictures Polepole listed above was too tough and stringy, despite not having worms...
Yep, those Golden Lings sure are attractive, but by far, the Blue ones are the best looking of the species.

I guess I'll have to catch and keep one bigger than 22.25" before I plan to release the 'big' ones ;D ;D ;D
-
When going after lingzilla and his friends, would you recommend going barbless or pinching down the barb? I've been struggling lately with removing barbed hooks without taking too much time or overly stressing the fish.
Jay
-
You guys are aloud to use barbed hooks down there?
-

Jay
It's pretty hard to stress a Ling too much and there good at shaking jigs off. I wouldn't use barbless but you can if you want.
-
Since I haven't been catching the lings, this has been mostly a problem with the blacks.
-
I personally don't like barbless hooks on lings. They just shake their heads too aggressively. I remember one morning at Slip Point out by Sekiu. There is a small ledge that comes off the point. Tom and I were fishing it and I had a number of good hookups, lings for sure by the headshake feeling and surging runs back down to the bottom. All lost. :'( The next day we went down the road to Snow Creek where barbs were legal. No problem keeping lings on the hook that day, and a few blacks to boot. ;D
We've been talking about golden, orange, and blue lings. This one is almost black.
-Allen
-
Maybe I'll just bend the barbs down on the 1-2 oz jigs since these end up on cast/retrieve duty when bringing in rockies. I'll keep the big boys for the bottom barbed.
Now I just need to get home and get rigged for a sunrise launch at PC tomorrow!!!
Thanks,
Jay
-
Polepole,
Have you noticed if Circle Hooks help with Lings? My though is to make some double hook (In line, Head and Stinger... A rig I use exclusively for Sharks here, with few if any lost fish) rigs with large circles for my next trip to Alaska to try out....
I going to get that 50" Trophy yet!

You know ... I don't use circles much on lings. For 'butts yes, but when targeting lings, I just don't have confidence in them. Also, unless I'm live baiting, I don't use bait much for them. And a leadhead with a circle hook just doesn't seem right.
-Allen
-
My thought is to use an old flytying technique, and wrap lead wire around the majority of the front hooks shaft, about 3/4 of the length of the hook... They tie a bucktail to this...
I figure with 7/0 hooks, I could get more than an ounce of lead on that thing... Pretty good for many situations. The tail hook would just be a Bucktail, or possibly a swimtail bait.
YotF
-
I'm sure it could work. But would it work better? I dunno.. But your post did cause me to think that a lure with bucktail (i.e. less body) may mean the lingasaur has less to hold onto, letting the jig slide through it's mouth/teeth, thus causing a better hookup.
Honestly, it hasn't been as much of an issue that I feel it necessary to make a better mousetrap ... except when fishing barbless.
-Allen
-
I may play with some indeas, and sned you a test...
Barbless circle hooks, you'll rarely lose anything...

Troy! What's up brother?
-
Bro,
Been busy fishing for large Sharks, Cobia and redfish down here... Ain't going to be able to make it up your way this year, darn 20th Anniversary is trumping my plans, but I will be there next year..
You been out catching anything in the Salt yet?

Would appreciate some pics!!!! Not on this thread though ... start your own. ;D
-Allen

Thanks to all the people in this thread that support a slot limit for lings.... Please don't kill the big breeder females just for a photo and bragging rights...This also applys to Halibut, Calico Bass and many other fish... We release all the female crabs don't we?... It's so nice to see that yakers are thinkers too...The smaller fish are much better eaters as well...IMHO
-
my first caught 3 in one hole lost the second kept the third 30"

This is an old pic from a pb/camp trip I did around Ft. Bragg a few years ago, but it still gives me a chubby.
The huge ling chomped the smaller ling at the boat, and my buddy gaffed the big one & landed both.

Lingzilla

Those pics are motivating! Might take a Ling Kong to beat out that Lingzilla! Hey Mooch, what's that brown monster laying over the bow on the green yak in the background of your 35# ling pic? That thing looks huge, too!
-
Not quite Ling Kong but it'll give Lingzilla a run for its money. I sure wish I'd remembered my camera on this day. It would have been great to get a lap shot with mama ling eye'ing my crotch. :o

Thought I'd throw this mama into the ling pile. Not sure how long she really was, but it felt good to get her back in the water.
-
You're the man YM. That pig is a beast!
This is a ling from a few weeks back in Cali. I didn't get an accurate measure but it was over 34".

If anyone would like to argue that this ling is NOT at least 40", or that the man in the image is not me...take it up with the lingcod. I can tell you roughly where to find him (or her).
Video soon!

Yea, what PP said, that thing is dark brown, looks like a big him to me ... It was too foggy to see the ocean this morning, but judging by the 2 foot swells inside Sunset Bay, i didn't really need to see it.
-
Holy crap! That thing actually looks proportional next to you.
Nice going! I can't wait to see the vid!

Okay those all put to shame the 24" 7 lber my fishing buddy caught yesterday!
-
24 inches and 7 lbs? Your buddy might need a new scale.

32 1/2 inches, about 13 pounds.

That's a FATTY
-
So not sure if this counts a BIG fish but I limited out on lings today caught my first ever, a nice 24incher ,
Went back to that same spot and caught this beast. 32" and 20lbs not too shabby for my second ling ever!! Fought like a donkey!! Big props to Ndogg for pointing my in the right direction, they were right where they said they'd be ;)
-
What was in that massively distended stomach when you filleted it?
-
Nice fish!
32" and 20lbs How much of that 20lbs was stomach content? That length usually weighs in around 12-14 lbs.
-
Dang, nice fish Bernie! That one is FAT!
-
Dang dude. That thing looks like it swallowed a basketball. Nice fish!
-
That fish had a approximately 18" ling in its belly.could have been bigger but couldn't tell, the head of it was mostly digested. The jaw bones were all still in there, I'll post a photo when I download off the camera. I bet it weighed 2+ lbs
-
Them Lings love to swallow big fish.

Sadly I wasn't able to use this for aoty points.
That reminds me, never posted my personal best lings in here
35.5 and 36.5

Nice lings guys.
Bernie I am glad that spot worked out for you. Did you get it jigging or trolling?
-
Hit up my fav "secret" lingin' spot Saturday and it was ON! Decided to live-bait which I don't normally do anymore because I'm too lazy. But it reminded me that when I take the time, you get into a bigger class of fish. First guy hit on the very first drop:
I had just started fishing and the limit is 1, so I tossed it back. But not before it tossed this back to me:
A while back there was a discussion as to whether lings would eat sculpin if you couldn't catch a greenling (for bait). I'd say yes.
Little later I hooked into this bad girl:
37". Over the slot limit! Fine with me. Put up a damn good fight and made a few drag peeling runs. That's what I'm in this for! Unfortunately what I didn't pay attention to was that the sun was behind me, so all the shots were blown out, this is the only one where you can actually see the fish :(
She had this in her throat:
At first I thought it was a juvenile ratfish, but bsteves set me right. it's a "sturgeon poacher". If you google "sturgeon poacher" you get pics of this fish, and mugshots of criminals :D
-
Nice lings guys.
Bernie I am glad that spot worked out for you. Did you get it jigging or trolling?
I was jigging a double swimbait rig.
-
Bernie that fish has a huge pot belly. Looks like it's been drinkin too much. LOL
-
My personal best so far. Caught at Sunset Bay on Sunday. Didn't have a scale but measured 36 inches. Also caught a nice blue ling!
-
Keeping this in the Lingcod thread!
While I cannot say it's the largest Ling in the thread... It was a "spectacular fish" none the less.
My little guy and I were out and on his 2nd drop he pulled up his 1st ever Salt Water fish (a smaller Quillback). A little while later he hooked onto his 1st ever Ling. It hit his Lure hard and went for a run. He let out a shriek and as I looked up, his rod bent down and the tip was in the water. The conversation went something like this...
"DAD! I CAN'T HOLD IT... YOU NEED TO TAKE THE ROD!" (Yes, I'm pretty sure everyone within 2 miles heard this, haha).
"Sorry buddy, it's your monkey so it's your circus. Tuck the rod under your arm, take it easy, keep tension and bring it up"
"...multiple squeals of delight as the rod tip danced around... WHOA! THIS ONE IS A KEEPER!"
"lol, we'll see. Rod tip up and bring it over to me (as I put the camera down)"
A couple guys were out fishing in their Canoe about 100 yards away (water was almost like glass). They started hollering to see what all the excitement was about. They paddled by a few minutes later and congratulated him on his 1st Ling catch. It was pretty cute.
65cm for retention and this little Ling was only 60cm so back down it went. We called home as soon as we hit the beach a couple hours later. He was boiling over with excitement and mom needed to get him to slow down so she could understand the story he was trying to tell her! By his version of the story, you'd think he caught a monster! lol
