I've seen commercial and sport pots between the bell and whistle buoys, straight out.

I'd go with the depth of water plus 25 feet.
There's often a N to S current and it can move.
I want to hear how you do, I'm heading out Friday

I have cut back a little on the size of my crab traps because of the weight of a full trap. Pulling them up from PC at 50 feet is tough. I can't imagine what it would be like pulling them up from 80. My arms are tired just THINKING about it!

Lost one of my crab pots today.  Had about 60’ of line which you'd think would be plenty good for the main area of Tillamook Bay (Sow and Pigs, Crab Rock).  Unfortunately, the screen on my Striker 4 crapped out on me so I didn’t know how deep the water was (and also wasn’t able to set a waypoint) but it seemed OK feeding out line with ~10’-15’ of slack after the pot hit bottom.  Figured it was a relatively small tidal interchange today so no crazy currents.  Apparently, I was totally wrong.

My recommendation is to factor in AT LEAST 50% in addition to the depth.  if you’re in 40’ water, you should have 60’-70’ of line.  Sure it’s a pain to pull in all that line but losing a trap sucks.  I’m not as worried about the loss of equipment as I am a bunch of good crab going to waste stuck in my trap and the thing rotting away at the bottom of the bay.  I don’t want to be that guy… but I guess I am today. :(

If you happen to be at Tillamook Bay and see a white boat fender (labeled RBAE) with a bright green pool noodle attached, please feel free to pull it and take it home and anything that may be in it.  I’d be very happy to know it’s not just polluting the bay.

am bringing my pots ( have 2 small and one deluxe danielson) sounds like i would be ok with 100, which i happen to have, pots all have 50 on em now. not to sure am going to try it out there, small chance may do it at least one of the days?? on the bucket list for sure. maybe crab newport after fishing?? idk. minus tides coming up, wonder how the currents are down there... i know can get ripping in the bays, but the open ocean? would suck to lose a pot.

I used a lil crabber today loaded to the hilt with chicken legs and a ziplock bag of clam guts/trimmings, set it in 70 fow in front whale cove as I wanted to fish south ….(although I scratched out a limit of feesh I should have headed north). Not a one crab! Chicken legs I had zip tied outside my bait bag and stuff in bag didn’t get touched even a little after a 3 hour soak too. Think I might skip the crabbing here. Good luck all tomorrow! Tight lines!!! Going clamming at Newport before going out of depoe again, maybe won’t be so foggy tomorrow too by then? Pretty foggy here almost all day with small periods of clearing.
