I called the Depoe Bay coast guard to get some information from them about this story. I approached the question to them so that we as a kayak fishing community can learn from what had happen. I was told that a review of the camera they had that the kayak turned hard and leaned or shifted their weight which caused the kayak to capsize, there was not a boat wave that turned him over. Also there was no radio clearance from the coast guard to enter the hole. The coast guard told me that if anyone exits their kayak in the hole DO NOT swim toward the rocks on either side. Swim if possible toward the harbor or stay in the middle until help arrives. The barnacles on the rocks will cut you and probably our drysuit. I was told that when we ask for clearance to exit or enter the hole the coast visually watch us with their cameras. Which I think is a good safety thing for us as a kayaker. This kayaker was in the water for 7-8 minutes before another party contacted the coast guard. If this kayaker had called for clearance the coast guard would have noticed them in the water and would have closed the hole until they were rescued. THIS WAS A VERY INFORMATIVE CONFERSATION I HAD AND I LEARNED ALOT FROM THEM ON PROCEDURES.

No, not the same incident. The kayaker at Depoe Bay survived. This was literally right at the mouth of Depoe Bay harbor.
