What a beautiful day on the water!

The bite was pretty hit or miss depending on who you talk to. There were large schools of rockfish that seemed to have little or no interest in most of the common lures. I did eventually find some success on Rockfish with 10 inch Lancer jigs. The rockfish were puking up large globs of baby crabs which probably explains why most of them were not biting. I would say they were simply not hungry as they all had literally 1000s of tiny 1/4 inch or smaller crabs in their belly.

I brought a couple home made pipe jigs that I had made and was thrilled to catch a couple Lingcod on them in fairly short order. Those Lingcod were fairly small (23 to 25) and got sent back with my gratitude for paying respect to my new homemade lures. After sorting out 6 or 7 smaller ones I did end up with a 30 inch and 32 inch Lingcod. Pretty happy with those. As I was heading heading in, I got to see the biggest Lingcod I have ever seen in Clayman's  (The Ling Master) kayak. Measured out at 42 1/4. HOLY COW! What a monster Ling!

While I was out in fairly deep water away from the majority of other people I had a pod of what I think must have been False killer whales swim past me. There were about 5 of them. I would say they were between 8 and 12 feet long, but hard to really tell. The dorsal fins were between 2 and 3 feet long. the seemed to be mostly grey which pretty much rules out the normal Orca. I tried to get a video, but by the time I got my phone out they were far enough away that I can't see them in the video. Either way a pretty cool encounter.

I had Chris snap this pic of my Lingcod. He may think it was because I was happy with what I got. That is true! But I also hope he can teach my phone how to take pictures of fish like the ones he gets!

Beautiful day out there yesterday! I was stoked to partake in it. Yeah, despite marking hundreds of rockfish, getting them to bite was generally a grind. I picked up some blues, a few blacks, and a yellowtail. Tons of crab larvae and by-the-wind-sailor jellies out there. Cameron said he saw blues crashing the jellies on the surface at one point.

The lings were biting well for me. I released a few 28-30 inchers early on while fishing some older waypoints, before I went exploring some new spots on the reef. Found a nice little ledge that produced a big, lurching takedown. Actually took several minutes to work the big girl up. When I spotted her 15 feet down, I knew this was a potential PB. Got her in the net, but she proceeded to alligator-roll out of the net. Luckily, the hooks were stuck in the net mesh, and she chilled out just long enough for me to grab her with my lip grippers and bonk her. Clocked in at 42.25" and 29 pounds, my second-biggest ling! Continued working the same ledge a little further north, and found a 37", 20 pounder to finish out my limit.

It was such a nice day, that I didn't want to head back in just yet. Drifted blue-label herring on the reef edges for a while to see if I could find a stray Pac halibut or a big sole, but all I could catch were a bunch of small- to medium-sized lings. I was fine with that, as it just felt great to lazily drift along and hook into a fish every now and then. Came home with a ton of snowy-white lingcod fillets. Excited to get out there for the next weather window to continue prospecting for new waypoints!

I'll step up and follow that outrageous report with my 'middle-aged guy' less amazing report (lol): a hit-or-miss day with a 'copper lining'.

Easy solo beach launch, slow at first at 110' over the reef, rockfish eating good and not on the bite, big lingcod ignoring me, then moving shallower (60') I started releasing small lingcod and after 7 or so, I hook a solid fish but first strong pull (like 10 to 15#), the snap swivel opens and I lose the lingcod but worse, a favorite Lancers jig (green/silver).  ouch.

soon after, Lancers Waterdog (copper/gold) brings in my PB copper rockfish by more than double- 20" and just under 5#. Coos Bay area these are rarely over 2# and the lighter coloration.  4 hours on the water and my back not happy, back to Forgarty, smooth easy landing.

My concern that it might be wormy was way off, clean white fillets, nice and flakey.

Tasty looking dinner sir!
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

Looks great Roger!

I pan-seared my lingcod cheeks last night. Spread an artichoke/garlic bruschetta over the top of them and threw the pan in the oven for another 15 minutes @ 350. Served with homemade tartar sauce and sauteed veggies. So delicious! The four cheeks alone made for a big meal.
