What is your go to top water rockfish lures. I was out last week and on the surface was boiling with fish. No matter what I threw at them they were not interested in. Thanks in advance. Dale

I watched an Angler West (I think?) episode years ago and they were casting lighter jigs at the schools with smaller 3” rubber swim baits. They were doing really well on them. I always wanted to try it but haven’t found schools hitting top water.

Edit: I found the video, 11 minutes in.

I've been taking a light action rod out to target rockfish and greenling. I throw a ned rig worm with a jig head made with a strong hook at the surfacing schools. I've also used other bass gear and all worked pretty well. I imagine a weightless fluke would do damage. Old blade baits just killed everything vertical jigging but I will switch out trebles to single hooks when I go again.

I would imagine you would do ok with shrimp flies. This is what I use exclusively for rockfish and it hasn't failed me yet.

I know last time I was out, there was crazy surface action. Turns out they were feeding mostly on lil blue floating jellyfish, and weren't interested in anything I threw at them. I have done well with 4" swimbaits on 1/4 Oz jigheads at times.
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

If they're feeding on by-the-wind-sailors (the little blue jellies), you can "match the hatch" by rigging up a few jellies on a size 4 steelhead hook and fly-line that out on a light spinning rod. I used to do that for blue rockfish in Humboldt when they were feasting on the jellies. Couldn't get them to bite the usual rockfish gear, but they would smash a fly-lined jelly!

Always wanted to try throwing a Zara Spook at rockfish. Given that a walk-the-dog style topwater is deadly on so many other species, I imagine rockfish would hit it under the right conditions.

The little green guy is a representation of crab spawn, its size is about the size of a dime if that. The purple blue one is a By-The Wind-Sailor fly pattern. Both are very deadly just under the surface with a slow twitch retrieve. Alot of times I will put the crab spawn fly on as a dropper pattern to a Gurgler.

I've caught rockfish on a good old Pop-R bass lure out of Pacific city. It is nearly as fun as Smallmouth bass on topwater but I digress.
