Title: AOTY 2018
Post by: YippieKaiyak on December 29, 2017, 09:11:56 AM
Any word on next year?  If we catch fish on the first can we save the submissions?

Yes, save your submissions.    We'll get the Pay Pal link soon after the first of the year.

In years past, as long as you payed your registration in January you were able to upload any of your January catches.   Unless one of the other AOTY admins objects, that will be the case again this year.

Sounds good to me. Also people are asking me about any rules/points changes for 2018, and I don't know what to tell them.

I think rainbow trout, Kokanee, and maybe halibut could use a points buff while yellow perch and panfish deserve a boost.  Or we leave it as is.

I’ve added brown trout this year.

The new AOTY site is up and running.

You’ll need to reset your password using your email address and the “forgot password?” Link on the sign in page.

The PayPal link is live on the NWKA page and at the bottom of the rules page.

Its harder to look at the overall points for each species under the new format, but I would pick a number, say the top 5% or 10% for each species and see how many are over 200 points.

Likely none of the panfish or yellow perch are even close, so they could use a bump.

Rainbow trout, kokanee and halibut have some high scores for the largest ones entered, but I would only drop their point value if a large enough percentage of the entries are well over 200 points.

Some of those giant trophies are legit outliers. Especially halibut which in 2A have seriously restricted openers for most of the fishery, and look to be even worse under the IPHC preliminary data for 2018. Maybe an Alaska adjustment is appropriate, maybe not.

Will there be a "most recent" again?  The Facebook page was good for that but not everybody uses that.

Other than that, bring it on!

Is there still a way to see all the entries for each species, like in the old format?  It's cool to see the all-time biggest fish for each category.

Or maybe it's right in front of me and I'm missing it  ???.

The site is a complete rebuild so some of the old features are still being rebuilt.  The priority was the log in/sign up, upload page, and leader boards.’uf The per species pages will eventually make it back.   As for the recent catches, I’m working on doing sort of a slide show page for that.  If anyone has an idea for a view of the data they’d like to see let me know.

Okay, I've added the species pages and "most recent" pages.

The species pages can be accessed from the "species" link in the menu or just click on any species icon on the site.  (if I missed a link to an icon let me know).

Thanks for your hard work on this Brian and whoever else is involved.

I really like the new pie graph for the species showing the percentage from each state and the bar graph showing the number caught my months

There are similar plots for each angler.  Click on the angler names listed in the detail section of the leader board.

That is so cool. I made myself a chart of my points, standing etc. It's definitely taking a lot more points now just to maintain a spot in the middle of the pack. Gotta catch more and bigger fish this year.

Can you now upload higher resolution pics from your phone or do you still have to reduce the resolution for entry pics like the end of 2017?

I believe the new system will deal with larger images more gracefully but I have not played with that aspect of it. Give it a shot and let us know how it goes!

Yes it is up and running and you better get out fishing because you are falling behind.

Also when you go into the site, go to last years section and scroll down until you get to the detail section.  Click on your name and there are all kind of stats for your fishing history.  Also in the species section there is lots of info for each species.  It is pretty cool stuff.

Part of it is a manual process after payment. We will always honor fish caught in the correct timeframe. If you're still not able to register fish please PM me.

Fish on!

For 2018, I have a few goals.  I always have the goal of bettering my score from the previous year.

Thanks to bsteves new graphs, I saw that I was kind of a fair weather fisherman, so another goal is to submit fish in the months that I have never submitted fish before.

I also want to add another fish that I have not submitted before including fish caught on the fly that I have not caught before.

AOTY has been a fun way to push myself to try new things and expand my fishing horizons.

My goal this year is to catch 10 (or more) species. I came close last year but completely forgot to take pictures of 3 species when the AOTY site was down. Wouldn't have mattered big picture as they weren't anything close to game winners.

That’s a great goal! Once you start putting fish on the board you may surprise yourself and start evolving your goal!
My goal is also to put 10 species on the board, same as last year. After that my goal is/was through out the year to pass whoever is just above me on the leaderboard.

Similarly, I plan to catch 10 species, but my total goal is higher as I personally want to catch 10 new species.  I think the best part of the AOTY challenge is getting out to new water for new species that I wouldn't try otherwise.

Someday, when I get time, I'll make a 2018 sponsors thread, but until then for all you who are already fishing:

Notice the new SUP category/challenge. One of my goals is to register some fish in the SUP division. And another goal I have is to actually place in the fly division. We'll see...

Well, the competition is perking along nicely with some early catches. How's about some more warm bodies sign up, though. Only 21 to date.

I tried real hard to get ten species last year but failed to get any salmon or a keeper ling from the kayak. I found out you can win a prize for tiny fish, though, so don't go leaving money on the table by not taking pictures of every fish! I'll probably get on the water in April after my quixotic quest for steelhead runs its course.

If you paid you'll be able to register your fish when you're able to get on. I'm not sure why it wouldn't be letting you past that page; I know it has worked recently. PM me if you continue to have issues. Maybe try a different device.

Any catch after you've paid will be honored, I think Brian aka bsteves just needs to confirm payment and set the login to active. Just get out there and catch some fish and we'll backdate the active date of your user to when you paid. Tight lines.

Thanks,

You likely did it correct.  It will show pending until one of the AOTY admin can verify that the fish was legal to take and verify the size.  Sometimes it will take up to a week.

Thanks for being patient everyone.  A large batch of new fish are now verified.

A fair amount of movement on the board with some people cracking the 10 fish mark.  It's upgrade season already for some anglers.  A guy with two Tillamook Bay day belt buckles has moved into first.  Good luck trying to pass him on the AOTY board.

WestSlopeCutt,

Looks like you successfully created and confirmed your AOTY account yesterday.  The password you set up during registration should work.

As for payment, the PayPal link for that can be found on the bottom of left hand side column of every page on the NWKA site (that is if you aren't viewing us via TapaTalk).

It’s heating up for sure. I was focused on passing Jimbo when Jrob swooped in for the pass, then Jed came outa nowhere with 3 fish. I don’t think any of us are done yet! My goal is to beat my score from last year, anything more than that would be a bonus.

thanks Casey! I am still watching for uploads not counting on anything just yet ...lol   I might take a year and focus on the WKBF. Tyler(upland sandpiper) put a major asswhoppin on everyone this past season ... I am going to chase him around the leader board see if I can't make a improvement on my 5th place finish this past season.
