Title: South Sound Meetup
Post by: holtfisher on November 14, 2009, 07:17:48 PM
I searched however did not find a South Sound Rollcall, maybe my spelling is off (usually is).  If none exists, how do we get one started, perhaps stretching Federal Way South to maybe Centralia, Cascades to the ocean?????? or????????

Holt, your doing it right now.

had thought of this too, when we 1st started seeing the PDX and SEA crew roll calls. since we're basically sandwiched between them, but have to travel so far either way, figured it was an exercise in futility.

but, since you started this , Doc,........... >:D

I'm way the chuck out here on the coast, stuck in between the Twin Harbors. Maybe I should start a thread on: "Is There Anybody Else Out Here In No Man's Land?" :banjo:

But S Sound is close enough for a day trip, and has some great fishing! Count me in!  I like to get out for some paddling/cruising on nice days, and if there's some fishing opportunity there too, I'm on it!
This Winter I may be hiking/wading along rivers for steelhead, or doing some lake fishing on nicer days (don't like to be out in a boat if it's snowing, or in heavy or freezing-cold rain). Winter paddling in the coastal estuaries doesn't usually produce any fish, but its awesome just to get out there and explore on a nice day (no significant precip. and light winds).
And then there's sturgeon fishing in the lower rivers which I am going to start doing.

If she doesn't mind changing to a desk job, tell her to keep her eyes open for Veterans Affairs positions.  Veterans Service Representative (GS 7/9/10/11) or Rating Veterans Service Representative (GS 9/10/11/12).

I'm on Vashon, marinf area 10, but on the south end---Maury Island.

The VA / gov retirement is a big plus---I can stay in my Group Health group, and Uncle keeps paying the same share I got from VA while working.  Big plus, with the cost of health insurance these days.

Chris; at this point, no. still trying to rally the members, and find a common meeting ground, since we are talking about such a widespread area. however, am thinking that the Farelli's Resturant in Dupont might be the best place. it's off the Center Drive exit, and very easy to get to. it's also centrally located between Tacoma, Oly/Lacey, and very easily accessed by members coming from this neck of the woods, too. it also just happens to be right across the highway from the army post, so members from there could also make it easily.

but, again, at this point, i think we are still going to be open to suggestions. HINT; chime in with suggestions guys.

Howdy Dan, Either ya love those razor clams or ya don't!  The digging was easy last night here on Grayland beach.   I just wore a LED headlamp and used a LED flashlight and had no trouble finding my limit in short order. (I noticed that the elements on my Coleman propane lantern were shot). The clean white LED lights worked fine to spot the clams. The "shows" were big and too easy to see. They looked like deep navels in the sand, and most were the size of nickels. Clams were nice sized, too.

OK, will be talking to management at that location in the next day or two.  as Lee said, they are very good at setting aside tables for small groups. have seen that myself.

so, 730pm on a Tuesday or Wednesday night sound good?? say the 12-th or 13th as a tentative date?( gives everyone a chance to check calendars)

Thank you for contacting me. We would love to have your group come on Tuesday @ 730. I have put you in our reservation book so we will be expecting you! Would you prefer the bar area or the restaurant area. If you would like the bar area I just need to make sure the everyone will be 21 years of age and there will not be any children attending. Let me know when you can and we will be looking forward to seeing you!

Thank you,

This one is already set up, and I don't think we should change anything.  That said, Zee thinks we'll get more participation if we go further north.  I think he's right.

Anyone opposed to a more northern location next time?  We can always switch it back to the south end if there is a lack of interest from people further up I-5.

Thank You, Ladies and Gentlemen for attending the 1st South Sounders get together. Had a great time listening to all the different advice and the freely given information..

Everything from tents to locations to life experiences, to, well, anything, was discussed around the tables. i think we all took away as much as we gave.. Well, maybe except for Holt.. poor guy, i know that for every question you had answered, you had at least 4 more pop up.

overall a nice, modest start to what i hope is a continuing event for many of us.

That was a fun time last night.  WR, you are correct 1 answer and 4 more questions ;D  It was fun to meet all and have the kids and ladies there.
The second Tuesday in February is the 9th. I will be glad to volunteer to coordinate.  My suggestion is to have it at the same place and what ever time turns up as most desireable.

What topics come to mind to get on the table informally?

uhhhmmm knot tying? rigging a simple anchor trolley? setting up a "columbia river " anchor system [ which is our yak fisher universal "rig the claw anchor from the bottom" system, if you didn't know]

not sure why we never did that before, maybe we've all just been too busy living our lives? bear in mind , NWKA is still quite young, and regionally large, so we've probably taken an inevitable 1st step in it's further development?

holt, thought of this on the drive home last night.. it's a perfect addition to what you are planning; http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,1231.0.html

i think we're gonna have to rig up a little table flag with an NWKA logo on it. sort of like the club oriented reservation plaques they use in gasthausen in germany and pubs in england. i gotta take part of the blame on the confusion, too Lee.. i should have told the general manager to reserve it under NWKA.. and i didn't for some dumb reason.

anyways, glad you enjoyed yourselves. next one is when, again? whomever is taking charge, pm me your off site email so i can forward the contact info.

WR - Great idea regarding a flag or some type of Marker for the table.  I met a great seamstress last eve with a guy and ordered two pair of fleece socks and a ear cover beanie.  Sounds like she would be a great person to ask to make the table ID.   How about it Squid Girl??? ;D Am sure enough of us would pitch in $ to have a great NWKA marker.

FEBRUARY SOUTH SOUND MEET UP
Second meeting is at same place as first, Farelli's Pizza, Dupont. Shooting for 7:00 or 7:30PM Tuesday February 9, 2010. Let me know if you can make it, which time - 7 or 7:30 works for you (majority rules), and how many in your group so that I can reserve an area for us.  Will try for a quieter area and have it under NWKA.
Bring show and tell, or topic you want to cover.  I'll dink around with a sort of -kinda - loose not so very much of an agenda. ;D.

Does the second Tuesday of each month have reasonabl possibility for those interested in attending? holt

Another thought for a meetup ....

Say on a sunday Afternoon. do a potluck at someones house. we all take turns hosting it.  That way we can bring our yaks and tackle and do some technique swaping and this is how i did this. and not have to worry about a restraunt enviroment.

And doing it on a sunday we could do it in the afternoon where we have daylight to play show and tell outside. and the family could come along to.

Good thoughts.  Brainstorm - piggyback, how about a Sunday afternoon veranda at a park close to water, plenty of room for family, show and tell etc? People can try out peddle/paddle, wide, skinny boats, etc. Anyone have ideas of that type of Southsound salt or fresh water park availability?  Veranda in case of rain, however we can bring some tarps or???  Someones home could also work. We are out due to lacation, no back yard and tiny front yard in retirement community.
Ohhhhhh, we have access to a veranda on reservation basis in Jubilee (Hawks Prairie), will check and see if is free or....but water is not close by  holt

might be a stretch for some, but another nice venue that has those attributes is Millersylvania State Park just south of Oly.  Not sure about Tolmie, or  Salt Water SP's, or any of the public areas along the east shore of the Sound. places like American Lake,  Marine Drive in Tacoma? anything in Steilacoom or Tillicum?

SG

With my 40 pound SIK, it's a great launch, with my 90lb Tarpon, it's a nightmare.  You can wheeleez down from the parking lot, but once you get close to the water you have to navigate 2-3ft diameter logs and a small beach that is VERY crowded any time it's warm.  Oh and very limited parking on nice days.

Millersylvania State Park looks nice, Nice little lake on the map (I've never actually been there)

American Lake has American Lake South County Park.  I haven't been there, but I like American Lake cuz it's so big and no wake zone near the park area.  The wakeboard terrorists generally stick to the west shore where there are no houses.  There is also some place called Bill's Boat House that caters to fishing.  There is also American Lake North Park, with a REALLY nice boat launch that costs $10... but you can get around that fee by parking in the park area.  I could research this option if people are interested.

Offut Lake has a public launch somewhere... and a "resort" that I'm researching to possibly take my kids to this weekend (Swiftdraw pointed that place out)

Alder Lake is a good drive, but on a weekend it's a great place and easy Kokanee killings.

yeah all good places. i'd like to suggest we save the parks , with the exception of american lake, til warmer weather?? was thnking you have good ideas already, it's just a matter of sorting them out.

BTW,  Millersylvania isn't all that far south of Tumwater, and when i was scouting it the other year to do the initial HoW event, the head ranger told me, ' We've got lots and lots of bass." [Cobrakak, they'd still love to host an event... the head ranger is a Vietnam vet who lit up at the idea.]

the lake is slightly kidney shaped, about 3/4 mile long. and the park is on the, ummmm, N..E shoreline. there are multiple large covered pavillion/kitchens with fire places, and the boat launch is all the way at the back of the entry road. lilly pads and shore cover along all edges. have to check but i think there is a motor restriction and jet ski prohibition on the lake.

guys, i feel like i'm dumping on ya for the scheduling of the 2nd meetup, but like i've said, i got tagged for Jury Duty.. oh boy oh joy.

All SouthSounders Meetup - Please provide your input to this posting by Thursday January 26, which gives enough time to set the location up.

WR, all good input.   At this point, I believe only 3 of us have stepped up to meet for February.
At this time the schedule is loose for February 9, Tuesday 7:00 PM, location Firalies, Dupont.  Please state if this date works for you.  If this date is not workable for you, please provide the February day you can make a meeting and we can sure look at majority rule.  Thank you, holt

Getting "stuck" sounds more like a problem that happens on McNeil Island just to the north of Anderson.   :D

thanx again to everyone for showing up.

Ryan, we missed you somehow..  :dontknow:

thanks, too to Holt for taking control of this one. I'll step back into keeping it running for at least the next month.

if anyone in the south sound area has a suggestion for a different location, please PM me. i know the core of 6 who've made all the meet ups would welcome new faces.. and we are all open to suggestions. Tacoma/Puyallup guys?? Dupont too far in a wrong direction? day of meeting wrong??

briefly tonight we covered how Lee caught that nice rainbow on American lake, helped Holt work out some more details for packing down his Hobie for this epic yak camping trip he has planned,  met future yak fishers barely out of diapers, passed around some of the handmade custom fleece garments Squidgirl makes, and made for Holt, and talked trailer details with Cobrakak..and many more subjects, all in a relaxed, tho a bit noisy, atmosphere.

remember, all are welcome. just let us kno ahead of time so we can plan table size accordingly.

Ryan, don't sweat it. stuff happens.

btw, my question [ 2 posts up]  still remains. my only issue with our current meeting place is that i am hard of hearing after 30 + years of working on military and heavy equipment and the background noise pretty much makes it impossible for me to hear whats being asked of me, or to participate in cross table conversations.. so if you see me scowling, it's not because i'm cross with you, i'm just not having a good time hearing you. personally, i'd like something a bit quieter.

anyways, please let me know via PM

For a march Meeting what do you think of  Saturday (20th) or Sunday (21st) around day 2pm potluck at Mine and WR's place. I have a grill that we can cook on and a place to hang out outside and if it rains we can either do under the carport or the living room is big enough to house a bunch. we can look at yaks and talk rigging and set up.

we could meet up at one of the lakes close by and then all meet up at one location a park or my back yard.

ok south sounders, squid girl tossed it out there..and nobody bit... maybe too early for you?? too close to the long holiday?? we're open to suggestions. it does not have to be immediately after this weekend, but i think we should have at least one meeting before the end of the month.

last year/ early this year, run by myself, SG, holtfisher and lee, we met at farrelli's in dupont cause that was a simple place to get to for both tacomans and oly -ites. it's also not that much of a reach for those of us on the East side of the military boundary..

other venue? different time? Spanaway at JRs Whistle stop?? Hawks Prairie Casino or The Ram in Lacey??

think it over, but i'd like to see my inbox start flooding with ideas within the next week.

Next weekend for opening weekend lake fishing I will be camping at Tanwax Lake at Camp Lakeview http://www.camplakeview-wa.com/ (http://www.camplakeview-wa.com/).  I was wondering if everyone was interested in having a meet up there on a Saturday maybe May 14 as previously stated.  The only down fall is they charge a $3 day use or you can camp for $20-$26 like I do.  They do however have nice swimming area, boat launch and place for everyone to meet and BBQ.  Not to mention I killed it trout fishing last year and the best part is I did it still fishing no trying to paddle and fish at the same time.

Usually this early in the year the skiers and fast boaters are not to bad since the water is so cold. Also they usually only come out during the middle of day and fishing is usually better at day break or dawn.  I will double check while I am there this weekend to see if there is anything special for group gatherings.  Don't forget they have good places to both tent and RV camp.

Sorry between camping the last two weekends and getting ready and starting my new job this week I have been busy.  We will be there also.  As for fishing opening weekend we caught 30 trout 29 from trolling with my Aluminum boat.  last weekend since my battery was dead I did a little fishing from the dock and caught 8 trout and 11 small perch.   We do have a spot there already reserved it is the closet electric spot to the boat launch.

Hey South Sounders, I'm new to the forum. As my handle suggests, my name is Micah in Olympia.

I'm more of a saltwater kind of guy, but am willing to get into freshwater fishing for salmon/trout in particular. Unfortunately I have only a narrow sea kayak to fish from until I save up enough for a Hobie Adventure...

I will keep an eye out on this thread to find a meetup that I can attend

Hope to meet some of yall on the water

Were any other fish caught after I left?  Tori hooked a 12+ incher on the way back across but lost it at the boat.  This time the trolling speed was about 2 instead of 3.5-4 mph.

There were a couple more brought to hand, and another handful missed by the kids or lost at the boat by everyone.

I was bummed to miss the event with you guys but decided to try my luck this afternoon at Tanawax. I caught a few perch trolling a repala along the shore and hooked into a hog rainbow. When I was fighting the fish I realized I forgot to bring my net. I hoisted the fish into the boat only to have the hook shear. Luckily, I had the fish in the boat and quickly clubbed it on the head with my leatherman. I went for my stringer and the damn trout came alive and I had to sit on it. Went for my leatherman and it found a way to jump out of the boat :'(. It had to be between 18 and 20 inches and a fatty......lessons learned BRING A NET! Maybe next time I can meet you all. If you don't have a net, just grab a large trout around the mouth and through the gills.  They can't go anywhere then.  I've landed 3 steelhead without a net that way.  Those tiny little teeth don't hurt.

I disagree. I've had hatchery steelhead teeth rip my finger pretty badly. Also, please always look to see if the fish is hatchery (fin-clipped, usually the adipose fin) before you stick your hand or fingers in its gills. Don't do it if its a wild or native steelhead and you intend to release it. I will also take this opportunity to ask you to release all of your wild steelhead, even in the rivers where you are allowed to retain one. Thank you.

If you get a firm grip in the corner of the mouth, you won't have any problems.

The law says you can't remove a wild steelhead from the water unless legal to retain, and you of all people know that I do almost all of my steelhead fishing on the Wynoochee.

This was my last hand-landed Steelhead:http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,5575.0.html (http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,5575.0.html)

Title: Re: South Sound Meetup
Post by: polyangler on February 14, 2012, 07:41:51 PM
pretty simple. Just need curly tailed jiggs (I prefer Gulp), jigheads from 1-4oz, and find a pile of rocks or some other kind of structure out in the ocean. Just get on top of the structure and start jigging. The rest will fall into place. Be mindful of tides and currents if that place happens to be a Jetty. I recommend going out with the last of the outgoing tide, and fishing the incoming tide so your not pulled out to sea.
Title: Re: South Sound Meetup
Post by: flyry on February 14, 2012, 09:22:02 PM
makes since.  What about depth this time of year?  If you are talking about only using a 1-4 oz jig, it seems like you wouldn't be fishing more than 30-60 ft depending on current.  I've definitely fished with gulps for striper on the east coast.     Are there rockfish in greys harbor?  I'm trying to stay out of the open ocean for now.  I've never been down there so any more advice would help.  Still trying to install my new fishfinder.  Bought a Lowrance mark 4 greyscale ff/gps for 180 bucks!!!  Thought it was a pretty good deal.  Anyway the offer is still out if anyone wants to get out for these guys.
Title: Re: South Sound Meetup
Post by: polyangler on February 15, 2012, 07:24:44 PM
20-60' seems about par for the course, and yes there are fish in Grey's Harbor. That's more Micha's turf so I'm sure he can give you some insight. The only place I know to really get'em there is along the jetties. I really like the jetty at cape disappointment, but this typically isn't a trip for the faint of heart. Will be more than happy to meet you down there when the ocean conditions clean up a bit.

To get you started... American Lake can be a good smallmouth lake, but there is a ton of bi-catch that goes along with that (mostly rockbass). Try dragging inline spinners like #2 Vibrax, or 2" Rapalas in rainbow trout color for trout. You can find them from bank to bank. Target the top couple feet of the water column. I seem to do best near the condos on the north end of the lake. Stay within 50-75 yards of the shore once the powerboats and jet skis get bad, and you'll typically stay on the bite. If you launch from Sunnyside Park in Stelicoom you'll find an endless supply of flounder. Getting your boat to the water will require a set of wheels, or a a strong back and a couple of trips to and fro the car for gear. Starting anyday now you can jig for kings just north of there in front of the 1st dock you see. Just look for the crowd of power boats and you'll be in the right area. For the flounder I like small Gulp plastics. My typical rig is a 1oz freshwater leadhead with a 3" Gulp swimming mullet. I've found dropshot rigging a Gulp smelt on a #2 hook and a 1oz dropshot weight outfishes the 3" mullet though. For the king jigging, 3-4oz Point Wilson Dart, or Crippled Herring jigs in some flavor of green will get the job done. I'll give you a heads up next time I'm fishing local if you want to meet up. There's a few other guys you might be able to hook up with between now and then too. They'll likely chime in later.

Tight Lines

Brand new to kayak fishing and trying to learn what to target during particular months, where to go etc.  I try to go out at least once a week but work a funky 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off schedule.  Every other Fri-Sat-Sun I have off which is pretty awesome.  I went out on the HOW Chum Run last year and have fished with a few folks from here.  I look forward to meeting the rest of you eventually.

Anyhow, looking to get out around Neah Bay, Wilapa Bay, Grays harbor, Westport, lower Big C, anywhere someone can point me towards decent salmon fishing and getting out safely. Looks like a slow thread, but I'm the newest south sounder. Tacoma

Lot of us South Sounders are members...just gotta get organized one time to invade a beach.  Maybe we can reserve a BBQ pit someplace and push all the power boats out of the area with shear numbers.  Owens Beach at Pt Defiance has plenty of parking.
Is there one in MA 12?

LOL - workhard just posted about how some of the guys that fish out there are horrible boaters with bad attitudes. They may think twice about messin with us if we head out as a big wolf pack though.  XD

Can't remember who it was workhard had replied to but he was also interested fishing Pt. Defiance. Now that MA10 is closed for Chinook until January, I want to start trying out new places to fish for them. Owens Beach looks like a really easy launch. In fact Google maps actually shows a big rack of kayaks near the parking lot.

That was me, we were talking about Pt. Defiance. There is plenty of parking and it’s an easy launch for us. I usually bring my PB out and troll but the traffic has been heavy. What I usually do is link up with three or four large boats and troll in waves. Usually guys get out of the way if we are polite. Problem is some guys are trolling and others jigging, all on top of each other.

I haven’t ruled it out but safety is a large concern after what I have witnessed this season. The picnic area would be a good meetup spot. Don’t believe you need to reserve it, just get there a bit early. I have a house near Pt. Defiance and usually keep an eye on the traffic flow. If 4 or 5 of us got together and fished as a group it would be safe.

Let me know would love to coordinate something. Browns Pt is not a bad spot for a meetup, lighter boat traffic and a nice launch point for Pinks. Possibly Gig Harbor... I am brand new to the forum and kayak fishing.

I'd be interested in a South Sound meetup.

I've been hitting Ft.Flagler this summer. Unfortunately, what I've landed has been small or had an extra fin. Maybe I'd have better luck going south.

Most boaters are extremely courteous.  Pt D is full of rental boats and a-hole tacominites.  There are also a ton of people (kayaks, paddleboards, and boats) that have not 1 clue of the rules of the road out there.

Maybe try the KP. there are parks in and around gig harbor with much less traffic than what (I assume) youd get in tacoma. And it's only 20-30 min away.

Seems to have been pretty quiet here but figured I’d shout anyhow.
Olympia here - and willing to take pointers on lakes For now. My current yak can’t handle the ocean. Want to upgrade when I can save a few grand though.

There are a couple of boat ramps at Lake St Clair down your way.  Trout, bass, panfish, and some cool, unique scenery. At least to a geologist. ;)

Yeah. I’ve fished long lake so far, no luck on the trout there. Still trying to figure it out.
I’m a little intrigued by ward lake and their Kokanee. Never caught salmon before. The idea of artificial baits though kind of turn me off. I have never had much luck with them.
However, I also feel like I need to become a big boy someday. Lol

Never fished there. Nawatzel and Offut are good for trout, I really like Nawatzel. F5 Rapala rainbow or orange flavor and roostertails, black or white, flat lined trolling has produced tons of trout.

The traditional bait for Kokanee is corn w/ tuna oil, a natural bait  8)

Standard koke gear is a 4" ish dodger with a hoochie, spinner, spoon etc behind tipped with said corn. I imagine the fish are going deeper with warming temps

It's slow fishing but they're in there. I caught a few for halibut bait back in May / June. They're pretty much 25' down year-round in there. If you're really wanting to catch a salmon I'd recommend the resident Coho in deep South Sound. Launching at Arcadia and fishing in Hammersly around Cape Horn on the flood is usually good, just mind the tides - it RIPS through there. The Coho area 12-18", super easy to find and catch, and are really good to eat.

I would but I don’t trust neither my current kyak nor my skills in the ocean just yet. Thank you for the tip though.

You sure the map you were looking at didn't say " here be dragons" ?  ::)
