CHINOOK SHOWDOWN SPRING SALMON DERBY
Springer season is upon us, which means it's time for Next Adventure's Chinook Showdown! Open to kayak (and SUP) anglers of all ages, all proceeds from this fun event benefit the Portland chapter of Heroes on the Water (HOW). Join us for a day of great company, great food, and (with luck) great fishing.
Your registration fee includes entry into derby and food/refreshments at weigh in. Additional non-angler meal tickets will be available for friends and family, again benefiting HOW.
Awards will be given for Biggest Overall Fish, Biggest Limit, and Top Finishing Junior Angler. All awards are determined by weight. Fishing is open to the entire Columbia watershed however day-of waivers will need to be returned to Sellwood Park.
NOTE: All anglers must complete and return a liability waiver prior to event. Waivers may be returned by mail or in person at the Next Adventure PSC (early registration only), or at day-of registration at Sellwood Riverfront Park from 6-8am. There will be no required event check-in if pre-registered with a Waiver received; simply go fish and bring your catch to the PSC for weigh in between 12am and 3pm. Fish MUST be gilled and gutted (aka cleaned but not filleted) prior to weigh in.
Sign up before March 31th to save $10 on registration! April 1st and later, will be $30.
Weigh in, food, and award ceremony will take place at the Next Adventure Portland Paddle Sports Center To keep the party atmosphere, we will be offering 15% off in-stock items (excluding boats and electronics). Please use offsite/street parking for this event.

The link says May 2nd 2020. What is the event date for this year? My apologies if it’s written some place and I missed it

Disregard… I’m an idiot 🤦♂️

I meant to mention that it appears that the Next Adventure graphics department just "recycled" the old graphic header from 2020. This event is indeed for April 9th, 2022.

This must be a Willamette only thing since the Columbia closes on the sixth.

You may fish anywhere that it is legally permissible to retain a fish, as long as you have it back to the weigh in point by the time set forth in the tourney rules.

I got the go ahead to sign up today. WOOHOO!
I have not caught a Chinook from the yak yet

Anybody interested in a Springer Seminar? If so, speak up. Also let me know what night of the week you'd want it on.
Thanks!

I would love one! Hopefully taking my 1st swing at it on Saturday before the kayak demo.
I am guessing you would do this at NA? I don't live near Portland so probably not worthy of counting my vote.
Now if you felt so inclined to PM me some tips and tricks that would be super cool!! I will be coming up for the Chinook Showdown.

Stop and chat at the kayak demo. I'll try to get you pointed in the right direction. I'll be working talking about Daiwa gear there.

We're a week away so I'm going to give this a bump. I hoping to see a lot of fish caught and some great prizes won this year.
Thanks,
Anthony

I am excited to attend. Hope to see others there

Definitely going. Has anyone found the waiver they talk about? I am not planning on fishing at Sellwood and hoping to get that turned in before the event.
Where are folk planning on launching? I am leaning toward Fred's/Cathedral/Botton of the Channel. Maybe Gilbert River, but that is a long drive.

I’m in.

The waiver (or link to it) should be with your sign-up confirmation email. I'm trying to get a stand alone link to post up here in case anyone lost or deleted their confirmation.
-
i cannot remember if i submitted my waiver or where my email is. Any luck finding the stand alone link to the waiver? If not could someone send it to me?

PDF of Liability waiver.
See you all out there.

Thank you for posting that up. Much appreciated.

What kind of prizes will be given away for big fish? I didnt see any hints or details on the NA webpage. Are we talking cash? Or gear? Or new Hobie kayak?

I was wondering the same. Unfortunately I can't make it anyway nor am I able to reliably catch salmon, but I certainly could've been swayed to disregard prior obligations had I known what the prizes are/were.

Hey everyone, my name is Ian and I’ll be helping to run the part of the Chinook Showdown at Sellwood Park. If you’ve already signed up, paid your entry fee, and submitted your waiver, there’s no need to find me in the morning. Feel free to fish wherever it’s legal to do so. If you haven’t done one of those things, you’ll need to find me at Sellwood. I’ll be there around 6am. I’ll be in a white Subaru Forester with a Next Adventure banner stuck to it somehow. I’ll also have a white-ish hobie outback rigged for fishing next to it. I should be pretty obvious. At 8am I will be out on the water fishing myself. You can call me on channel 68 and meet me somewhere on the water. I wear a red drysuit. I'll have some waivers, pens, and a bag for your entry fee. Please pay in exact change since I don’t plan to have any spare change with me. Keep in mind the weigh in runs from 12 to 3pm at the Next Adventure Paddle Sports Center (624 SE 7th Ave, Portland, OR, 97214).

The prizes are going to be gift certificates, fishing gear, that kind of thing. No new hobies this time!

Thanks for the update Ian!

Who won?!?

Who won?!?
Mark A. won everything with a 7.6 pound fish! Easy decision since that was the only fish returned. I'll write up a full report in the next couple days that'll be on the next adventure website in the near-ish future.

I just wanted to thank everyone who came out to fish. It wasn't red hot, but at least Mark was able to boat a fish and took home a nice Next Adventure gift certificate. Thanks for supporting your local Heroes On the Water chapter.
And thanks to Next Adventure for hosting the tourney and providing the killer tacos!
