Title: Foggy Bay 2010
Post by: ketchikankayak on November 02, 2009, 09:45:07 PM
Join Ketchikan Kayak Co. in summer 2010 for a remote multi-day kayak fishing trip to Foggy Bay, Alaska. You've read the posts and seen the pictures. You've dreamed about it and said 'someday'. Well now is your chance to get in on a great trip next summer.

We'll be camping for five days/nights in the Misty Fjords National Wilderness, on some small islands just north of the Canada/Alaska border. Great variety of kayak fishing for silver salmon, halibut, lingcod, yelloweye, etc.. Come drop your line where the salmon still roam free. We'll also be crabbing, exploring, cooking fresh seafood, and just relaxing in the Last Frontier.

As an added bonus, your own local hero Allen Sansano will be joining us, helping ensure all your rods are bent. It'll be great to have him, and he knows the area.. follow him.

Two trips. Six people per trip. All inclusive. Just get to Ketchikan. Thanks for all the interest and we look forward to seeing you next summer!

Aug 21 - Aug 26
Aug 26 - Aug 31
$1300 per person

I can think of lots of convincing arguments trouble is I have yet to find one that works on women ::)

Might try pushing up the wedding a few days so you can have a "romantic honeymoon to Foggy Bay" :love8:

Change the date of the wedding to a few months earlier, but don't tell her why. Just tell her you love her SOOOOOO much that you just have to get it done sooner.  Once you're married and the smoke off the wedding vows is clear,  you can then immediately start testing the waters.  Stay within the vows, but push your limits just enough to see where she starts to get cranky.  Over time, you'll get all kinds of free time again.  :angel9:

Just put "allowing you to fish when and where you need" in the vows! Just slip them in there.  I did that with my wifes awesome waffles!

Eight months to go:

Checklist:
Reserve Airline tickets.  Done...
Reserve dates for 20-25th.  Done..
Get replacement Temple Fork Outfitter Travel Rod for one lost last year in Huli.   Done
Get appropriate Jigs for trip.   To do...
Get bottle of Gosling Family Reserve Rum to enjoy on trip...  To do...
Get the days to be shorter, so I can go there already and stop Jonesing for the trip...  To do..

Anyone else committing to this trip on these dates?

Also, I will be arriving in Ketchikan the 14th, and plan on bumming around, fishing and camping for a week prior....  Anyone else want to join me up there, this type of Alaska trip is dirt cheap and lots of fun.  Plus, I have insider knowledge on where to target King Salmon then..  The last one I need for my Pacific Seven Salmon Slam.

Welcome to the trip Troy.  Hope to see some more of you sign up.

Good luck on the Chinook.  And just to keep you excited ... I arrived in the mid-afternoon last year.  We made a quick stop for a license then went out on Howard's boat.  I thought it was bit late in the summer for kings up there, but we made a few drifts in the secret spot, and I hung a bright 10# model.

Remind me, which TFO rod is it that you like to use?  I used a Tsunami rod last year after seeing how well they did the year before in PWS.  I used the smaller of the 2 travel rods the guys had up at PWS (TSCC-703H, rated 15-25#) and found it to be a really nice rod for bottom jigging, even up to the 8 ounce heavies we were using.  Tsunami has a new lighter weight spinning rod out this year (that I just happen to have received one of), the TSCS-703M, rated 6-17#.  I can't wait to run it on the silvers this year.

Allen,

I have one coming in the mail as we speak...   I believe it is this one..

Model:  TFS 864MH
Line:    8—17
Lure Weight:   1/4—1 oz.
Length:  8'-6" 4 Med. Heavy

But it might be this one...

Model: TFS 904H
Line:   10-25
Lure Weight: 3/4—2 1/2 oz.
Length:  9'-0"

Either I am happy with, as all TFO rods are Fast Actions 4 piece travel rods.

I am going to spool them with 8 or 10 lb braid, so I should be able to cast even lighter baits a country mile if I need too.
Title: Re: Foggy Bay 2010
Post by: polepole on January 19, 2010, 02:44:51 PM
No need to cast a country mile.  We were "sight jigging" schools of silvers just 10-20 feet below our kayaks last year.  10 or 12 pound mono works great when hooking fish that close to your rod.  It's much more forgiving than braid.  And don't forget your fly rod!!!

Also, make sure you have a rod capable of jigging 8 ounces.  Most of the butts came at 200-250 feet and there were times that 4 ounces would not hold.

I was thinking silvers.  There were so many of them, it got silly at times.  I didn't have any fly rods with me, but I was fishing them with a 10# conventional outfit and was wishing I had an ultralight.  I was also wishing I had some poppers because I would have loved to see them bust on it.

But yes, there were a ton of pinks up in Very Inlet that would have been "about right" on the 5 weight too.

Nothing special works for me!   :D

I flyfished for years on a old Eagle Claw four piece fiberglass spin/fly combination or a two piece Sears and Roebuck South Bend two Piece fiberglass rod.   It can't be worst!   :o

Mine is still useable...Might bring it and get some slime on it.

It long ago deserved a trip to Alaska....

It is the rod that has seen all 26 countries I have fished in, and all but Alaska of the 50 states....

I am sure I can fit it in with the others.

Caught more fish with that rod than you can imagine..  Bought it used in 1980 for about $10.00...  The guy who sold it kept the tube, as he converted it into a Bong.

Not sure yet Allen...

I have a couple of friends who are trying to see what their work schedules demand..  Dan being one of them.

Another friend, a pilot, needs to see if his ground school for a new jet can be pushed out.

A third friend, depends on when a deployment is scheduled, he's a jarhead...

I should know in a week or two... *Fingers crossed* on at least one of them.

Hoping the trip gets filled the week I can be there, otherwise I will have to alter plans in the area, since the airplane tickets are locked in, as are the vacation dates.

My experience fishing Foggy Bay is that they'll hit whatever you throw down at them.  Being in "the zone" was the biggest influence.  Too shallow and no fish, too close to the reefs and too many rockfish and lings, or snags.  I believe Spectra worked better than mono.  However, when using mono, instead of jigging, reel fast for about 20 feet then let it back down.  It's all about reeling the stretch out and getting the lure to hop off the bottom.  That's a trick from Howard.  With Spectra, just take big sweeping strokes.  Caught the most on the Kalin BigN (glow!), but that may have had to do with the fact that it was the heaviest jig (8 ounces) that held the bottom best.  At times you could get away with 2  ounces, but more often than not, you needed 4, with 6 or 8 being even better.  But they also came on a variety of swimbaits and irons.

I know the ones, and those will work great!!!

Be forewarned, it is a tad bit more snaggy at Foggy Bay.  Not bad, but over the course of last year's trip I lost 4 BigN's and didn't have any left for the last day.  Actually lost 2 others that I gave out as well.  And had another 2 that got chewed up until their tails fell off.

If you're making a dark and stormy with Gosling's I think you'll like the results better if you go with ginger beer (a stronger form of ginger ale).   Barritt's Ginger Beer from Bermuda is traditional but hard to find in the states. You're more likely to find Reeds Ginger Beer (a Jamacian product).

I haven't tried a Dark and Stormy....  Getting Ginger Beer is indeed difficult..

The Ginger Ale is great with Gosling Rum...  I like it better than Coke, which I feel drowns the flavor of the rum.

Going to bum it with yak, tent and rods.

I should have access to a smoker the week prior too...  Possibly a Hobie Outback to fish from too, so I can have pictures of me in a Hobie in Alasak with fish...

So, a week to get the freezer filled before heading out to Foggy...

I'm sure we'll be able to hook up while you're here.  I'll have some waypoints mapped by the time you make it up here, and with the hobies on the pedals, we can keep up with each other nicely. Oh, and btw, I brought a few fly rods with me on the drive up.  You're more than welcome to take them out to foggy.

I have a few fish to post to the AOTY already, but I keep leaving the camera at the marina  :'(  I'm probably off work tomorrow, but regardless of working or not I'm headed out for the greylight fishin' (2 am) to see if I can get into some serious fishies.   >:D

I think Dark Rum will be too "flavorful".  Speaking of too flavorful, use a lighter soy sauce when making the ikura no shoyu zuke.  Standard Kikkoman style soy sauce is too strong.  If that's all you got, water it down.  Same comment about the sake.  Don't use a strong, dry type.

Too strong and you lose the fish egg goodness.

Oh [WR], thank goodness for online translators ... they still don't translate into something entirely comprehensible.   ???

I think you're asking if I'm going for both trips and perhaps you said you might be able to make the second.

As of right now, I'm planning on making the second trip only.  I'm not sure if this is common knowledge, but here's the deal ... I have a baby due in July, and the second trips is only 5 weeks after he's due.  I'm burning all available GAF to be able to go on one of the trips (doing both is pretty much impossible), but it will be oh so worth it.

Congrats, Daddio!   :occasion14:   Is 5 weeks enough time for post-partum depression to slacken?  Do you have a nanny/grandma/gaggle-of-mommies lined up to help out?  You gonna convince Troy to send you home with enough rum to help you with the 10 weeks of diapers you'll owe once you return?  Rented a satellite phone yet (if it even works up here)?

I have a baby due in July, and the second trips is only 5 weeks after he's due.  I'm burning all available GAF to be able to go on one of the trips (doing both is pretty much impossible), but it will be oh so worth it.

-Allen

Uh-oh...   Look out world...  It reproduces!     :o

No Hali will ever be safe again...     ;) ::)

Congo Rats Bro....  I expect to have to suffer through baby pictures when we are partaking of the spirits...     :P

The inlaws live close so we got that covered.  I'm just hoping Troy will save me a sip.  I'll at least get to see him on the "transition day".

Satellite phone ... yeah, they work up there.  Would you believe that we actually had a little phone reception at Foggy Bay last year.   Colby's iPhone was actually ringing when we first landed.  He was so caught off guard that he asked, "does anyone hear that ringing?".  Followed by "Hey, that's my phone!!!".

ummm, wow, that wasn't common knowledge, Allen... good news for you for once.

yeh guys, my german is atrocious, i know, but thats what i was asking. i had thot Allen had posted he would be there the entire time, but i may have misunderstood. since the 1st week is full, it'd have to be the 2nd.

was trying to pull Troys leg about whether he was going for the fishign or the drinking. or both.. but he makes a good point... fish your ass off during the day and unwind at the end of each with good slowly savored drinks.

i really am trying to gather it all together to make that trip. for me it'd be a once in a life time thing.. and it's far far cheaper than the fly fishing only trip i'd done to Belize just before i expatriated from san antone to pacnw for the current employment.

whens the closing date for decisions, again?

Oh, and, Troy;

Right now i'm only a 45 min drive from the Yeungling Brewery and Museum. It's about halfway between where i currently am working and where Fishin T currently is. Great little town, we played football against them when i was in high school up there, but the Jim Thorpe/ Pottsville Maroons  Legacy is hard to overcome , That school had always been a power house and we'd get our butts seriously whhoooopeded.

Anyways, all that to tell you that yeah, Yeungling is still a good beer, but try something better. look up a 6 pack of Sam Adams Black Lager. I think you'll be very happy with it.

No real closing date.  You can register at any time so long as there are spots left.  Of course sooner is usually better as the remaining spots can go at any time.

Looks like I won't be in Foggy the week you are, Troy, so there's no reason you can't take my boat.  I'll be using Howard's fleet for tours locally, and will have little time for personal fishing, so you are free to use my boat.  We'll just have to remember to put together a quickie little AA powered battery system as back up for the electronics, though my 10ah battery should last quite a while for ya, if ya need it at all  ::)

Below is a link to NOAA's reduced scale and subdivided booklet chart that covers Foggy Bay.  Of particular interest are pages 11 and 15.  I also like that these are kept up to date regarding the Coast Pilot and start with a few pages with all the relevant info.  Enjoy.

http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/17434_BookletChart_HomeEd.pdf

If I was at home and had my old trusty machine, I'd include .pdf exports of just pages 11 and 15.  Any volunteers?

Here's at least the insert for the Bay.

A couple of points of interests.  See the test "Delong Islands" in the upper left.  We stayed on the largest of the islands, the one you see just to the SE of the word "Islands".

The majority of our fishing was done just to the west of these islands in the 200-250' range from 57 minutes up to 58 minutes ... literally "right out front".  Silvers were in the same area but in shallower all the way to shore.

We did go all the way south to Foggy Point one day.  Of course it was the windiest day so we didn't/couldn't fish it hard.  Only pulled one tiny chick (not even a chicken) out before tucking into the bay.  Inside the bay on the flats was dead.

Lot's of areas to explore.  Tried to find that 5 fm rock at the mouth of the bay, but couldn't.  And to the north is a flat sloping out to deeper water.  And those flats south of Foggy Point.  But really, with the fishing we had right out front, it's hard to motivate to paddle much farther.

The rockfishing got silly pretty quickly.  See the reef extending from the islands south?  We skirted the whole thing and it was pretty much constant action.  Anytime you got shallow there were rockfish.  When we were fishing for silvers, if you dropped too far down it was instant hookup.

And yes, bring the light tackle!!

Hi,
New to the board- used to live in Seattle but now in Maryland. My 2 sons and I were on the Foggy Bay trip with Howard and Brian last week. Met Allen on the plane from Seattle to Ketchikan.  Fishing was awesome and Howard and Brian covered everything we needed and then some. Multiple halibut in the 25-35# class were landed, as well as the mentioned 100 lber and one ~50+ inches by my older son. Caught the full gamut of species. I'll post a few pix shortly once I downsize them to comply with the file size limits.

Great pictures and I will keep looking for more reports and pictures.

Awesome trips...

I solo caught and landed a 31.7 lb Halibut at Knudsen's Cove before the trip, plus a 30.25" Ling.

Then at Foggy Bay, Large (#25 plus) Hali, 40"+ Lings, #15 plus Coho, and a variety of other species...  Full trip report to follow...

Suffice it to say Allen, you missed your chance at the 3 digit hali club....  A guy from New Jersey of all places passed you on the list, his first day out!   >:D ;D

So, where do I begin?  The trip to Foggy bay was, as Doug Wilson would describe it, LEGENDARY.  Although there are more stories that I can easily share here, there are several aspects of the trip to foggy day that I didn't think deserve some photos and some words.

The pic above illustrates how the weather was astounding for most of the trip.  In fact the bulk of this summer the weather has been quite moderate and it felt more like western Washington that it did like Alaska.  What does that mean?  Well, it means that sunny and mild with low lying clouds and light breezes have been the predominant weather pattern for the last few months.  This is also true of the time spent in Foggy Bay.  Although we did experience a little bit of rain and wind on a few days, it was short lived and moved through quickly. The only portion of the trip where weather was a nail biting concern was before the trip began, and whether or not the conditions would be favorable for the ride out to the island on "The Boat" (http://www.chartertheboat.com/chartervesselcrewinformation.htm).  Captain Bill was able to take advantage of the good weather we had, and the trip down to the island was smooth and pleasant.

Once we arrived, setting up camp was the first priority followed directly by the first fishing outing.  While everyone was getting ready with their tents and chopping firewood and doing the very first things that were necessary to establish camp, I started working on the kitchen.  I gotta say, that with my years of experience camping in the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest the fundamental importance of a strong tarp system can't be underestimated.  So, I began finding a way too contrive a temporary shelter that did not intrude past the intertidal zone.  This part of the Misty Fjords park system requires that campers (after securing a permit) practice zero impact camping.  What this effectively means is that you must stay out of the trees: no tents, camp fires, or latrine activities in the woods. All of your things and most of your time should be on the beaches.  Howard had done some significant scouting of this area in previous years and is quite keenly aware of the tidal effects on this island. So, with just a little bit of guidance we were all able to set up our equipment above the tide line but outside the trees.  This very effectively highlighted the wisdom in the choice of location because we actually had enough sandy beach to spread out the tents for a semblance of privacy, and we had room to spare.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get my tarp system up and arranged on the first day and had to make dinner without the benefit of a tarp roof.  Mother nature was cooperative, and I had no difficulty or concerns about leaving the kitchen exposed.  All of the fisher folk came ambling back into camp and I could tell right - from the radio chatter and broad smiles - that everyone is very pleased with what they had found.  To be honest, I do not have a standing record of who caught what, when, how or where exactly.  But let it suffice that the quality of the fishing is unsurpassed by anything I've seen this summer or in my recent memory.
The next few days were a blur of activity, including making the kitchen prepared correctly and just providing for the general needs of a group of this size, and proved to be very entertaining for all.  I should let those who have had more focused memory of their specific accomplishments tell their own stories.  Hopefully, there should be a large number of photographs arriving on howard's desk, and we'll try to add them to this report as the trickle in.  It doesn't always work out when people mean to send things in, but we can always hope!j

When I mention just a little while ago that the time at Foggy became a blur, well that effect became more pronounced as time went on.  I had originally been slotted to be in camp for five days, however that changed to the full 10 day outing.  Howard Rocks!  Even though it wasn't a vacation and included a lot of work, it was the best 10 days of working I've ever had in my life.
Let me back track a little (and you wonder why it takes so long to get these reports out?).  Halfway through the 10 day period was a transition day between our first and second group of clients.  The tradeoff of groups went very well and we showed a level of expertise that apparently impressed Captain Bill.  The first night for the new group was quite a bit easier as camp was already established and everything was in full swing.  These were some very serious guys, intent on fishing like madmen, and they did exactly that. (just don't ask about the blue shoes!) It was nice to see that both groups of clients had it together and knew how to make the best of the time that they had.  I can safely say that no one left Foggy Bay with any sense of dissatisfaction.

Here is are the fish I photographed (not all of them, that's for sure) on my one full fishing day.  The boss was kind enough to take over the kitchen so that I could get a good day off the clock for serious lure slingin'.  My apologies on my horrible pics.  My camera is nearing it's last legs, and I don't have the right one chosen or the spare dough to replace it quite yet.

So, above is my best fish of the trip.  She came in on a fast tide rip, on a submerged point in about 80' of water.  Epic fight, and I think the most fun was trying to figure out what it was before it made it to the surface.  It wasn't fighting like a big rockfish, it didn't feel like a barn door, and it wasn't a snag.  Howard was there, watching the fight, and we were both surprised when it came up a big ling.  I got her to calm down (she made another good line peeling run) and we got a picture.  Then I laid her in the boat and did my best to measure.  Because I was rollin' without my pedals, I had a good space to fit her in the big footwell, where I tried to measure her quickly.  Her head was at my toes, and her tail at my ribs, but she had a significant curviture that caused my relatively flat folding measure device to read just over 40".  There was no way she was going to die that day, so I just slid her back into the water and accepted that there were no AOTY points for that beauty.  I would have had to get a fish over 55" in order to be able to score it, and I wasn't willing to keep her out of the water any longer than I already had. I'm happy with the picture, and to know that she is probably sitting right back on the same spot I pulled her from.

I'll have to stop by and say hello to her next year.

Wow that's some incredible imagery YM. Those clouds make it look like some old prehistoric volcanoes in the background. Unreal fish and what an adventure. Thanks for the report and pics!
