Title: June 16-17
Post by: Akfishin on May 30, 2012, 11:24:18 PM
Anyone planning on fishing this weekend? I'm not keen on heading out solo for my first trip sans powerboat so looking for someone I can tag along with. Heck, we can load up the pickup and split fuel if ya want. I'm not 100% that weekend is a go but most likely is. I figure on camping on the beach somewhere...

I'll definitely be fishing somewhere. That far out its still weather dependent. Cook inlet salt first, then Ressurection Bay would be my initial choices. Last resort might be floating the Upoer Kenai.

I want to hit the inlet up still. And I still like whiskey gulch. Both from a camping and fishing standpoint . But ill try anchor pt again or deep creek.

Im not sure when Ill go. I have some work on friday the 15th. So I probably won't head down till saturday. I'd like to stay through monday if thats the case. Kinda up in the air. Work is starting to really flow in my direction and its hard to turn down to free up fishing time. This last winter was pretty skinny and that experience is still fresh in my mind!

I hope to join you for this -- now that I've satisfied my need for fresh sockeye out of Resurrection Bay.  I'd like more halibut in the freezer now. Hubs has Friday off, so I'll try talking him into the drive to Homer. He just got a new touring kayak that needs to get salty. It looks like a Porsche compared to my Revo.  We're going to have a race on Eklutna Lake today.

That's funny since I think the Revo looks like a sports car next to the Oasis in my garage. Make that Revo sing!

I'm game for anything from deep creek to the spit...we've got a day or two to figure it out.

You want to borrow my AI for your race :)

Turns out I didn't need the AI after all... We're not competitive with one another. Oh no. Not at all.  Twelve miles, three hours and three minutes. I kept that sweet man off my right shoulder the entire time at a steady pace, then sprinted hard for the last hundred yards to claim the crown.  I wasn't completely spent, but my paddling husband was more tuckered out than usual.  He would have lapped me if I'd been paddling too. Winner bought dinner. It was the right thing to do.

Next time I'm on Elkutna, I'll have my 5-wt and chase Dollies instead.  Especially at the river, by the airstrip. Gosh, it's beautiful around there.

Ok.  Back from Juneau. Between the marginal weather and the king closure, I'm thinking about heading to Seward. Going to try tolling for sockeyes for a few minutes with bare hooks behind a flasher. Then try my luck with bottom fish of any kind. Maybe I can get lucky and hit a large arrow tooth to flounder points. I'll check weather in the morning then head out.  I'll probably try the prison side if I looks doable. Otherwise Mille landing and try my luck near Tonsina cr.

Look for us, fishing Tonsina to Callisto today. Gorgeous day -- gonna need sunscreen.

Nice Akfishergal.  Of course the weather (wave) is nicer in cook inlet than Seward. I'll probably get a late start but good luck and be safe!

How did it go? I'm pretty jealous. I should have gone.

I wish you had too. Friday night was the prettiest I've seen Resurrection Bay -- calm like a lake, no wind and negligible wave. Saturday morning was windier but still sunny. Picked up a couple of cod between Callisto and Tonsina. Met another of our NWKA fellows on the water off Tonsina -- he'd gotten a chicken, his first halibut. Never saw Kardinal, so he must have been on the opposite side.

Hey.  I stopped by. I think I saw you car. I wasn't feeling all that great so I just drove back. I did hit the other side Sunday. A few cod and a few flounder. Cod looked nice and clean so fish & chips!!

I'm seriously bumming about the king closures but Best to conserve the stocks. I guess I'll have to try it in July or hit the feeders hard in October.

This year is definitely not starting as well as last year but a lot of the summer left!

Lots and lots of summer left most definitely. We'll chase the kings yet -- but for someone like me so new to saltwater, it's all exciting. I'm always eager to see what I haul up from below. Did you launch from Fourth of July on Sunday? I've fished from there to the river mouth, but not yet from there toward the mouth of the bay. So much to explore.
