Title: Your local beach clean
Post by: ZeeHawk on June 23, 2009, 10:50:05 AM
So we fish all the time and we see the garbage that's floating around.. We pick up what we can but we're fishing. How about taking some time when we're not fishing to clean up and chat w/ our bruddahs? All you need is some spare time, a garbage bag, and you're doing a lot for the health of the place you fish and the creatures in the habitat. Post here to organize a beach clean for your local water.
Thanks.

I'd be there, but Thursday nights I stay with my mother.  If I bail on my 83 yo, widowed Mom I'll be there.

(After re-reading this, it almost sounds sarcastic - it's not - it's true)

Great idea Zee, along those lines I think I will start a new personal yaking tradition.  I think I will throw an extra yard debris bag or two in the truck. Every time I fish, once done fishing ;D and getting the gear loaded up, I will take 20 min or so picking up what trash there is laying around. If nothing else it might build some karma points, never can have to many of those ;D...

I can't tell you how easy it was to fill my rear tank well with trash while fishing in San Diego Bay or even off the coast of Point Loma down there. :angry7: That's one of the things I love about the Oregon coast, you don't see too much of that up here.

I've gone from taking a single garbage bag along with me, to keeping several in the car...

this is from my "secret" sturgeon spot.  Trashed nightly by poachers/teenagers

(http://twitpic.com/show/thumb/64q59.jpg) (http://twitpic.com/64q59)

ironically enough, on that trip, the second garbage bag was already there and contained one single beer can.  i've hauled as many as 4 bags out...

:angel7:while i am definitlynot a little angel, i have had very few instances of bringing only one bag of garbage after a paddle.I always carry a couple.

I think it's a great idea to get people to find a nearby beach   & gather to pick up garbage .  i  hate to feel like the garbage police :police: but i really hate when i find things like the plastics rings that hold cans of your favorite beverage :spittake:floating in the water or washed up on the shore.

i live up north in marysville, but i think even if ya can't make it to Richmond, just try to remember to stick that extra hefty bag in your boat every time you go paddling,&
:fish: just imagine how trash that would add up to over a short time.
It's a great idea Zee

moot point now, brandon. he announced today that he sold it. http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,4914.msg51776/topicseen.html#new

but, no, even tho i have one yellow yak already, i'm not a "yellow person".

So, Zee; would the mouth of the Nisq. Delta be considered a local beach? last time i went up that thing, it was just plain nasty with abandoned tribal fishing gear, mostly net markers make of old styrofoam coolers , milk jugs, etc. i remember Hooknose told me there wasn't much we could do about it.

I came across this discussion and figured I'd share my $0.02.  I've been packing empty garbage bags in and fuller garbage bags out of fishing areas for years and there is something that I have found.  It was more blatant for me during the days walking river edges chasing steelies.  Walking along the trail, I would see garbage that was just out of reach from the trailway, as my main intention was fishing, I would tend to leave some garbage from others as it lay.  The next time I went to the same place, that same garbage would be there, almost always with some more added to it.  So one time, I had enough and made a point of picking ALL of the garbage, no matter how far from the trail.  As long as it was visible, I took it away with me.  The next time I went to the same spot, NO NEW GARBAGE!

Here is the main reason for my post.  I am a firm believer in the Broken Window Theory created by James Q. Wilson and George Kelling and written about in The Tipping Point by Malcom Gladwell.  Here is a quote.

"If a window is broken and left unrepaired, people walking by will conclude that no one cares and no one is in charge.  Soon, more windows will be broken, and the sense of anarchy will spread from the building to the street on which it faces, sending a signal that anything goes.  In a city, relatively minor problems like graffiti, public disorder, and aggressive panhandling...are all the equivalent of broken windows, invitations to more serious crimes"

I commend everyone that puts effort in to clean up garbage.  Not only are you cleaning the environmental threat but you are also helping to discourage others from particpating in 'breaking windows' and leaving trash behind.

Our motto "yakin' in, packin' out.

Thanks for the great post, BB. This inspires me to be more committed to bringing trash bags with me whenever I go fishing. To be sure, some spots like public boat ramps and popular "meat hole" fisheries just seem to get trashed no matter what, but I believe that the "Broken Window Theory" generally hits the bull's eye.

I remember that commercial. I'm not sure how I know this, but that crying Indian dude wasnt really Native American. He was an Italian man who just loved Native American culture.

I pick up whenever I can, wherever I'm at.

Before giving up on the "prodigal" project,  I tried to inspire the other site to embrace this way of thinking. A true focus on leaving every place cleaner than before the paddlers arrived and then documenting, to influence others to do the same.
You can see that there was some support but little participation other than the Team B-port guys.
With the larger membership I was almost surprised that it wasnt embraced. almost

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=28291.0 (http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=28291.0)

Until finding this thread, I was considering starting a "trash talk" section here since I had deleted the trashy comments I had posted recently from the last TBP trip.
The negative edge didnt seem to fit well with a report thats focus was on the recreational lifestyle we embrace and the scenic beauty of our favorite haunts.
I had wondered if it was even applicable here. The GREAT northwest is PRESTINE! I am always amazed at how clean everything is when Im up there.
One of my biggest frustrations when cleaning up waterways is that most of the trash originates from anglers. It baffles me that fisherfolk will change out line on a reel and just leave it. Or dropping a empty bait jar that just couldnt seem to fit back in their tackle bag.
It would be impossible to know how many foam worm containers we have picked up.
BUT, the most interesting observation we have made during our many years of collecting trash is the brew choices of the primitive lifeforms who trash my planet.
It is a RARE event to find a microbrewbottle, or even any other beer container other than Coors or Bud.

This is a great thread and Im not surprised to see who started it. Thanks Zee

Here is my latest trophy.

I've a good friend in Pacifica, CA who started a beach clean up community effort at least ten years ago. If you've ever visited Rockaway beach you've possibly noticed just how litter free the area is. This last year Lynn Adams, now President of the Pacifica Beach Coalition won a sizeable $10,000.00 award for her efforts which she is putting to good use for the cause.
Link here: http://www.pacificariptide.com/pacifica_riptide/2013/10/pbc-president-lynn-adams-wins-cox-conserves-heroes-award.html

Lynn never started this to be famous, just trying to help the community. Well, famous she is now, with positive write-ups in all of the local newspapers like the SF Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury News, plus interviews on TV and radio. For many years she has organized the Pacifica beach clean up efforts by getting local merchants to supply garbage bags and the local garbage collection service to pick up those bags after the work is done. Each year she gets more and more people to volenteer a few hours on a Saturday morning. Over 1000 people showed up recently and created litter free Pacifica, CA beaches, even picking up cigarette buts and small items.

If you have a burning desire to do some community service, Google "Pacifica Beach Coalition and Lynn Adams" and she can help you with ideas. I probably wont be one of your volenteers as I live inland, however if your beach area is like Pacifica's Rockaway I know the local businesses, TV, radio and news organizations would give you a hand. Tell her Bill who now lives in Salem, OR suggested you call - she won't recognize my login name RV.

Wonder if any of the readers have launched out of the south end of Rockaway beach. Often times very calm.

Most of the guys down here launch at the south end of Linda Mar, the next beach to the south.  Sometimes the salmon and stripers come right into the beach there, and there is decent rockfishing as well as crabbing in the area.

Hi Allen,

Been a few years since I lived in Pacifica, I believe I had my beaches mixed up. The beach with the restrooms with the shower to wash off the surfers, next to the Taco Bell is LindaMar right? If so, that's the one I meant for launching at the South end like you mentioned. I've never launched there, in fact I had a sailboat at that time moored at Oyster Point so beach launching a 27 footer was a bit out of the question LOL.

Rockaway had two great restaurants one was Nicks which had excellent Italian food and I don't recall the name of the other one except to say their Ceasar salad made tableside was great. Then again maybe that Italian Restaurant had a different name... oh well.

I believe I've got it right now. Thanks for the correction, it jogged the memory a bit.

You've probably watched or participated in the clean up efforts at both those beaches. Also the beach that runs near the ocean pier in Pacifica.
