Title: Riot escape 12
Post by: Harryie on June 27, 2022, 08:06:07 AM
Hello! I am looking to buy my first fishing kayak for the sound and see the riot escape 12 is on sale at REI. To me it looks similar to a lot of other 12’ angling kayaks but I cannot find many reviews about this boat. Anybody know of any big issues with the eacape 12? Just seems like a good deal for the price. Thanks! https://www.rei.com/product/199330/riot-escape-12-angler-sit-on-top-kayak?CAWELAID=120217890012675918&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=118989340501&CATCI=aud-1396942684995:pla-1266950563132&cm_mmc=PLA_Google%7C21700000001700551_1993300001%7C92700063689288437%7CNB%7C71700000083757213&gclid=CjwKCAjw5NqVBhAjEiwAeCa97Se_Y6hTdO8pBuNCKmGW1THsVypxOqu6aDKnsie6a6rXB2tHY2zEERoCKBQQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I guess the biggest question is -- what are you looking for in a boat?

Looks like it has a hatch that opens up to the hull, which means you should be able to mount a through-hull transducer. So that's a plus.

I am looking for boat to fish the sound, mostly around Mukilteo, camano, and Whidbey. I’d like to target salmon and lings, so mainly want something stable that I won’t be worried about when the current starts ripping.

Thanks for the input!

Ut's hard to tell much from the photos, but the hull is reminiscent of the old Wilderness Systems Tarpons circa 2012.  Make sure your weight and the weight of everything you'd carry with you is well below 300# - manufacturers always stretch the truth a bit on that number.

Shop around for a good paddle, unless REI will make you a package deal.  Their prices are a bit on the high side unless it's on sale.  I like my Skagit FG and they're usually on sale at about $100 if that's in your budget.  I also like the Bending Branches Bounce and I can't remember any faults or why I gave it to my grandkid.

Thank you! It is on sale, marked down a few hundred dollars which is what caught my attention in the first place. I just can’t find much information about them, so I wasn’t sure if there was a reason for that or not (like maybe it’s just not a good boat and folks know it). They seem to have a few decent paddles on sale too.

YMMV but if your planning on trolling for salmon save up some more lettuce and get a paddle drive used if you need to.
