Fishing Vancouver, WA

A quick intro then on to fishing.

I am Matt. I am new to fishing for salmon, steelhead, and sturgeon. I have grown up fishing in Texas at the coast and some freshwater.

I am also new to kayaking, I am good on a yak but I don't have years of paddling under my belt.

I have done some research and setup my boat with an anchor trolley. That is pretty much it.

I am working on a rod/landing net holder for the open storage in the back. I have 3x 2" x 15" pvc pieces but nothing to fasten them to just yet. I have some 3/8 plywood and some other scrap lumber and other supplies to work with.

I want to fish!

I am hoping to tag along this weekend in Astoria, but long term is be able to fish closer to home for fish to eat. I hear that there is generally some sort of fish running through the area at most times of the year.

I am going to be able to fish at the end of Sep after this weekend so I have a few weeks to prepare.
Where should I go, what should I fish for? I am not opposed to local lakes.

Welcome to the site Matt,

If you can tag along to the Astoria trip, that will definitely get you feet wet literally and figuratively.  There are a lot of yak fisherman in your area so you have an excellent resource in this site and the people on it.  I am in SE WA, so quite a ways away from you, but I know the fall Chinook are running right now in the Big C.  Keep us posted on your progress and future exploits.

I also live in the Couve. Lots of cool places to fish around here. Big C, Willy, coast, not to mention all the sweet lakes.
This site is money for learning new techniques and places to fish.

Welcome, I'm in Camas, heading out Friday with the bride for her first Chinook effort.

Going to fish around the Lady Island, Sandy area.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I look forward to getting out on the river here soon, unfortunately I will be travelling for work through Sep so I will be back to fish early Oct, from what I am told then I can hit the tributaries for the rest of the fall run.

Looking forward to some fish in the freezer.
