OK, I don't know all of the details yet, and I am going to need some help, but I am going to make the ORC 2023 happen!
So... MARK YOUR CALENDERS!!!
July 8, 2023, Depoe Bay, OR and potentially surrounding areas...
I don't know yet how the entry fees are going to work, or if there will be any cash prizes, but the event is going to happen!
The awards ceremony and Captain's meeting will hopefully be at the Chinook Bend campground, but that is not official yet.
-
WILDCARD!
Way to step up - I'm sure you'll find people who are willing to help out.

Excited and will be reserving a spot at the Chinook Campground again this year!
-
I bought an outback last year from West Coast Sailing in Portland. They said they were interested in doing a sponsorship. For the ORC
-
Already have a camping trip planned at Beverly Beach for this weekend, how lucky does that make me?!? Looking forward to having ORC again. I am not sure how much I can assist with some new family obligations but please post up if you need volunteers for anything and will do my best when I am able.
-
Calendar officially marked. I really enjoyed this event when I attended in 2021.
-
Let us know how we can help. Anyone know who holds the rights to the old Facebook group?
-
Right on, Dan! If I wasn't already booked for a bluefin tuna trip that week, I'd be here. Hope you guys have calm seas and hungry fish!
-
Thanks so much for putting this on. EXCITED to see it's happening and looking forward to first time participating in ORC 8)

I want to attend, calendar marked

Where are we gathering?

The sign up will be out soon. Event will be based out of Chinook Bend RV park.
Potential launch points are Depoe Bay and Fogarty Creek.
-
YAY!! should be kept to just depoe tho, just sayn.

Spreading out between two parking lots isn't a bad thing. Taking up fewer parking spots at the Depoe lot would be appreciated by folks trying to park large powerboat trailers.
-
easy to predict the winner will be launching off fogarty than. from what i always seen was smooth at past events, not that big a deal. whatever, just glad ORC is happening either way.

Sound to me like you better launch from Fogerty then. I like the idea of spreading out the congestion. Depoe parking is always a zoo especially on tournament day.

Why would you think the winner will launch from fogarty? Interested in your theory.
I will be at the campground Thursday-Sunday.
-
This talk of North Fogarty is interesting, except all previous ORCs boundaries ended far south of North Fogarty.
This is from 2019, 2017 and 2021 use the same map.

All good points. I have been working with the fine folks at Next Adventure to get this event back up and running. I know we are a little behind, but it is in process and going to work out.
I have also been working on revising the boundary. NA is working on the web site for the event and if my recommendations are approved the open fishing areas will be expanded to include more areas around Fogarty Creek. There will be a new map once the page is finalized.

Before 2016 the old ORC north boundary was Rabbit Rock, about halfway between Government Point & Fogarty. Don't remember exactly which year the boundaries got shortened. I'm fine with launching from Fogarty. Sounds like new boundaries are being formulated.

ok well the reef outside of fogarty is known to bring in big lingcod more consistantly than area that has been the past orc`s boundaries, not that it has not brought in some bigguns as well , eh zach? my PB came from there too. as far as predictions? u know their not 100%, be interesting to see. so, either way am good with whatever.
-
as far as parking?, never been much of an issue for me and i pull a trailer. not once has it been an issue. with that said i realize others have had parking issues but none that i know of, had only heard of. u could have 2 kayakers go out there and there are some boaters who would bitch about that too. that lies where i have heard the most bitching i always posted the event on other sites and told as many boaters as i could but there is always a couple that show up turn and head to newport. or hang and park up top like alot do anyway on a busy day. most understand i believe it`s a once a year thing not like kayaks take over every day and the orc only lasts a little more than half a day. 99% were are ok with that and most i talk to think it`s super cool and wihed they could get in on it etc....
-
Not to be a contrarian, and I don't know the actual numbers, but sooooo many ORC-winning fish have been caught literally right out of the hole around the buoys, including my 24 lb ling from 2017.
My point with this is that there are always plenty of fish to catch in the boundaries we've previously used and those boundaries are already too big of an area from a risk management standpoint.
My opinion, after being involved with the planning in many previous years, is that one launch and land point is far safer and easier to manage. And launching out the hole, despite the shitty parking situation, is much safer because the Coast Guard is right there, managing the situation if we need help, which we have needed to use several times in past years.

Another thing to consider is that Fogarty is only fishable on relatively nice days. Depending on the tide height and swell, there are times where Fogarty is not launchable and becomes incredibly dangerous. The "channel" out of the cove there isn't marked, and it's all too easy for someone unfamiliar with that beach to take a NW tack out of the cove and get crushed by a wave coming over the shallow reef. If the swell picks up in the late morning, you have to make the long trudge all the way to Depoe to land. You only learn Fogarty by spending a lot of time there on various swell+tide heights.
Depoe, on the other hand, is a much safer launch option. The channel is easy to navigate (just head straight to the first buoy and you're golden). The CG gives you the yay-or-nay regarding whether the bar is safe to cross. If it's nasty, the CG won't let you launch. It's hard to mess that one up, even for the uninitiated.
There are big lings to catch at Depoe. I don't fish there as much anymore because of the congestion of boats coming and going all the time, but it's definitely the safer bet of the two sites.
Just food for thought. I don't want to hear of anyone getting hurt at such a fun event as ORC.

Exactly this. All of it.
This event absolutely has to take into account the fact that there are many people who compete, every time we have done it, where it's their first time on the salt. That's one of the primary reasons we kept coming back to do it at Depoe in the past. PC had, and still does, have all kinds of upsides to it for this event. And also hosted the 1st one. But the surf and lack of go/no go authority provided by the Coasties always made Depoe much more appealing from a safety standpoint.
-
need the "like" button`s here, another point well made.... SAFETY.
-
We have another conference with NA this Friday. I will bring up the concerns and maybe just cancel the additional launch site all together. I gave up on fighting the chaos of Depoe Bay in the summer.
-
I am sure many are caught up North but the current boundaries hold plenty of big fish. I picked up 2 40"+ lings in 2021 and was well within the North boundary. I know several big lings are caught each year on the southern boundary too. I would be totally bummed if the southern boundary moved north. Looking forward to the event either way tho.

Any update on the sign up and boundaries?

Any update on the sign up and boundaries?
Everyone is keeping quiet, they don’t want you winning again. ;)
-
Any word from NA? No mention on their events page yet.
https://www.nextadventure.net/events-classes
-
Any updates? If there is no tournament it would be fun to get a group going for coho and bottom fish the same week. I am planning on camping there tournament or not.
-
I don't mind go out with a group, actually I prefer that, I need to scratch daepo bay lingcod off my list.
-
The Tournament is going to happen.
Sorry about the delay. I got sent back to Illinois for work for a while.
Hopefully the website will be up soon. I just paid the ACA for the insurance policy. There is a surprising amount of forms to be filed and fees to be paid for the insurance. I am hoping this is one of the last hurdles.
-
We appreciate your work sir!
-
I’ll show up either way. Great fun to be had either way
-
anything?
-
The sign up sheet is live!

I have also made a Facebook page for the event. Search Oregon Rockfish Classic. Should look like this.
-
The page is hard to find on FB, here is the link:

Thank you!
This is my 1st time making a FB page.
One of my Soldiers made my personal facebook page back when I was a pkatoon SGT.
-
Do we have a link to the HOW donation page? Or can we bring the donation to the campground?
-
You can bring the donation to the campground.
-
:headbang:
-
Can I arrive on the day and fish with you guys? I don't have any camping stuff with me, and I have to leave right after. Of course I will bring a donation.
-
Yes!
Just make sure and link up with one of us on Saturday morning. There is a waiver you will need to sign and your vessel and gear needs to be inspected for safety items etc.
If not coming to the Captain's meeting, please pm me with your name, phone number and expected eta.
-
We are making a change to the Captain's meeting. Will be held at North Fogarty Creek park. Friday at 7 pm. East parking lot, south east corner.
Chinook Bend double booked the area of the stage. Getting our deposit back.
-
Pretty sure I can make it. Any idea how many people are showing up? How does every feel about the forecast?
-
I will be there. Forecast looks like it is trending g better for Saturday.
-
Sounds good I'll probably show up Friday night. Only debating because I work Saturdays, so I'll have to use up a vacation day. Swell looks about 4 ft. Not sure what the max is for depoe
-
Yeah, 4 feet isn't usually too bad. I would like to see them a little further apart but should be doable.
I was hoping to pre fish on Friday. Not sure that will be happening. Game time decision.
-

Currently there are six people signed up. Honestly, I feel pretty good about the forecast, not much in the way of wind at all on Saturday. It'll be a little bumpy with the swell at 8 seconds but there isn't much of a south swell to really mix things up. I think when it comes time to come back in at the end of the day we'll be glad we launched out of Depoe!
-
I want to come, but am eyeballing the conditions. Went out earlier in the year and surf was bigger than expected. My head was still rolling when I went to bed. Weather also got a bit choppy on the way in which wore me out. Never felt unsafe, but man that was work and I got pretty wet/beat up coming in. Did catch a good bunch of fish.
Not super experienced judging conditions so kind of hoping some of the old hands will weigh in with their thoughts. swell not bad height wise with a period that's pretty tight to the 2x rule. Wind looks great though
-
I will be there but not signed up because of the donation. Planning on doing it at the captains meeting. Not sure which to donate to.
If the ocean is too bumpy. I am planning on clamming and salmon fishing. The nestucca or the siletz( at camp) have salmon. Clamming at Newport will be an option too.
Could update the tournament to a salmon tourney if the ocean is bad. Either way should be a good time.
Forecast looks better for Saturday evening and Sunday morning. I plan on targeting coho if it’s doable.
Planning on Thursday thru Sunday at chinook bend.
-
Making donation at the Captaim's meeting just fine! Thank you!
The forecast for Saturday looks decent. Not great, but decent. Would be nice if the duration inceased a little. Not much for secondary waves so that is good.
Now we will see if mother nature pays attention to the forecast.
I will be in Depoe Bay from Thursday evening to Sunday. Staying at the Worldmark.
-
Alright I'm signed up. Short wave period be dammed, everything else looks good.
What time are we all meeting at the ramp?
-
Anybody considering Sunday with conditions a little more favorable?
-
I am coming down Friday afternoon and plan to fish thru Sunday.
-
Here are the rules for 2023 minus the Map.
The map is expanded a little to the North and West and still single launch point, Depoe Bay, OR
-
What time will you be at the marina for launch on Sunday?
-
I will be there about 5 am.
-
For those that don't make the Captain's meeting tonight at 7 pm at North Fogarty Park. You will need to check in with me or Shane Bird tomorrow morning. We will be set up for check in betwwen 5 am and 9 am. If anyone comes later than that then let me know at (541) 401-9290.
We will be ready to start signing people back in by noon. If you are off the water before noon, please let me know.
Please do not leave the boat ramp area without getting checked back in regardless of having fish to weight in.
Everyone must be off the water by 2 pm and have been checked in and fish weighed by 3 pm.
-
Anyone who sees this before the Captain's meeting. If coming from the south park at South Fogarty Creek. There is an accident just North of North Fogarty Creek that has traffic way backed up. Bicycle vs log truck.
-
I just drove through it. They have traffic moving in cones out. Didn’t take more than five minutes.
-
Looking forward to seeing results - sorry I couldn't make it!
-
Congratulations to Zach Dennis for his 2023 ORC 1st place finish! 18.99 lbs total. Lingcod, Cabezon, and a stud of a Rockfish!
2nd place Casey Broyles. Casey also had the biggest fish of the tournamt with a Lingcod that was over 9 lbs. 9.37 I think.
3rd place Cameron Heath with 11.21 lbs.
-
Good job, Zach. And Casey. And Cameron. Well done!
-
Thank you sir! I missed second place by less than an ounce. Released my first two lings, that were bigger than the one I ended up keeping, thinking for sure I'd get a better one.

Don't you just hate when that happens? Good job hanging in for third place.
-
Good to hear the results, and not too surprising the names on the list ;D
Great job, everyone!

I had a great time competing and hanging out with the group this year. Big thanks to Dan for organizing and putting on the event. Also a thank you to Anthony for his support and making sure everyone made it back OK. Lastly, a thanks to the sponsors. I’m really going to enjoy fishing my new rod and perusing next adventure to spend the gift card. Really looking forward to next year’s competition.
