A downrigger failure yesterday persuaded me to 'get to know' the ins and outs of my Cannon LakeTroll. I'm not up on my DR lingo, so bear with me as I try to describe the failure: Unless I was holding the DR crank handle, the spool continued to let line out. Even w/ the clutch tightened all the way, line would continue to go out, with the handle spinning along w/ the spool.

Below terminology comes from this page:
https://www.fish307.com/cannon-lake-troll-downrigger-parts/

Referencing pic 'DR1', I'm fairly certain that this failure was caused by a weakened 'dog ratchet spring' (circled in yellow) failing to push the 'dog ratchet' (circled in red) up enough to engage the 'brake plate ratchet'. By my reckoning, if I replace the 'dog ratchet spring', I won't face this failure until the replaced spring fails (apx 1 year based on this experience).

While I was inside the DR I figured I'd also look into why the action of the DR has been pretty catchy - not paying line out in a very consistent manner. Referencing pic 'clutch', on inspection I attribute this failure to a decayed/damaged/worn 'clutch pad', and potentially to a rusted/worn 'brake plate - reel' (the former on the left, latter on the right). So, if I replace the 'clutch pad' and 'brake plate - reel', the DR should deploy line in a more consistent manner.

Questions:
(1) Does my assessment of what caused yesterday's failure (line paying out when clutch is tightened all the way, handle spinning w/ spool) jibe with your experiences or engineering logic? Does my proposed fix sound proper?
(2) Does my assessment of what causes the inconsistent line deployment jibe with your experiences or logic? Does my proposed fix sound proper?

I'm a bit surprised by the state of the DR internals after only a year of moderate use. But - it is called a 'laketroll' and not a 'salt/brackish troll', so perhaps I should not be so surprised.

Was cleaning off the clutch box internals and noticed significant wear on the 'dog ratchet' -- glad I ordered a new one (on a whim, previous to noticing this wear). Not sure if this wear contributed to the failure, but it's kinda surprising to see after so little use.
