I remember the post but I can't find it through a search.  If you're using a magnet to mount your transducer - or anything else - I have questions.

I want to use a samarium cobalt alloy magnet for a different type of mount but I keep reading the rare earth magnets (any alloy) lose most of their rated holding power if they aren't touching the metallic contact.  Is this true?
I expected the worst, but it was worse than I expected...

Looks like you found what you were looking for.  FYI - I still use the magnetic mount on the T-13 that Trident 13 made.  It still works just fine.

I didn't find Trident 13's post, but I found one by Widgeonmangh where he built a magnetic transducer mount that was inspired by T13's.

I did one too.  I built in April of 2019....Still going strong.

A. Have the magnets corroded?
B. Did you attach a magnet inside the hull or let it be held in place with the magnet on the outside of the hull?
 

I did one too.  I built in April of 2019....Still going strong.

Happy to answer what I can.  I encased my magnets in plastic.  Based on research I expected them to corrode, so figured I'd seal them up so they couldn't get wet.  I have a fishing magnet that utilizes what looks to be the same style magnet and it's got some corrosion after a couple years use.  I know these magnets can be brittle too, so didn't want to accidentally break/chip one having them exposed either.  The plastic I used is PVC, so was able to sandwich two pieces together with standard PVC glue.  That's how I made the arm as well.

I made a matching magnet setup for the inside of the hull, so my outside magnets marry to the inside magnets.  I thought that would provide the strongest attraction, but I didn't test any other options, so not sure if that was the best choice.

I have found that the magnets do well on my Lifetime kayak, but are on the weak side for the thicker hull of my Old Town.  I've since moved to a track mount for the transducer.

For the build I used two disc type magnets on the outside and two on the inside.  If I were to do it again I would probably make the mount larger and use four magnets, but then the mount has a harder time conforming to contours of the plastic.  Will attach some pics if I can figure out how.
