Hey everyone! I’m fairly new to ocean fishing on the kayak and was looking for some advice. I have a hobie mirage that I’d like to take out into pacific city and troll for springers. I’ve done lots of fishing in the bays, lakes and rivers off the yak but haven’t taken it through a break yet. Looks like five foot and 13 seconds. Seems kind of big even at 13 seconds. Can anyone give me any advice on whether this is ok to do safely for an ocean beginner? I have all the necessary safety equipment and immersion gear (dry suit, vhf radio, pfd).

Also, if anyone with some experience wants to meet and go with and show me the ways tomorrow (6/7) or any other time, that would be great! Let me know when you’re going and I’ll meet you there! Just a newbie trying to learn.

If I were you, I'd wait for a nicer day. Something like 3' @ 10 seconds, or less than that. A 5' @ 13 seconds is going to have some shoulders on it at the shore. You may get out alright, but coming back in could be dicey.

If you're dead-set on springers, I'd troll the nearby Nestucca estuary instead. It's almost impossible to tell whether a Chinook hooked in the ocean is a springer, a fall fish, or a "feeder" Chinook. Pro Troll and 3.5 spinner in the estuary can get it done.

got get them!  my advice is don't overlook secondary and tertiary swells unless they are under about 1.5' or on a very long period. continuously getting shoved from several directions can make fishing, especially trolling, a real challenge.

Don't use a ball & socket style rod holder or one with a single mount point in your track. There's too much weight and force when trolling to hold it in place.

I actually use a ball and socket when struck it brings the rod to my shoulder so if I’m not paying attention I still know I got a bite 😆 I keep mine fairly tight.

Pay attention to what rogerdodger said.  There's a lot more to the conditions than the height of the primary swell.  Those 3-footers at 10 seconds can be puke-inducers if the secondaries and tertiaries keep the ocean confused.
I expected the worst, but it was worse than I expected...
