Title: Heroes on the water , Willamette Park Bass event September 27th
Post by: SteveHawk on September 16, 2014, 05:51:25 AM
Heroes on the water, Portland Chapter is presenting a bass event at Willamette Park for our veterans.
On September 27th, we will be hosting 8 to 10 of our areas local heroes here in dowtown Portland.

"What can I do to help?" you ask.

You can be:

1)  a fisherman guide to a vet. Use your experience to help a wounded Warrior face the challeges of the water and himself
2)  a shore crew action figure. Help run the machine that supports those on the water. Whether it be food prep, Tackle set up, or organization crew, the need is there. if you are helping on land, that frees up a HOW staff to be on the water.

3) be the local expert and teach our Lads and Lasses what the best techniques and bait are best for the certain stretch of water.

WHATEVER YOU DO, PLEASE REMEMBER THAT IT HELPS THOSE WHO HAVE KEPT US SAFE IN A WORLD THAT IS INCREASINGLY UNSAFE. A few hours of your time helps us all repay the debt that we owe them and theirs.

Hope to see you on the water,

Tight lines.

Wobbler

You and Ben have all that water down pretty good. I guess we'll have to live with half the package. Thank you Sam.

We have decided to move up River. To close to the algae bloom for us. We will be doing a float from Cedar Oak boat ramp to George Rogers park. Focusing on bass and sturgeon.

Well, we weren't going to let a little toxic algae steal all our fun, so we changed venues to Nehalem Bay for some crab. Crabbing was pretty slow for what it should be this time of year. We did get enough to send all the Veterans home with at least 1.

The salmon were jumping everywhere, and between pulls on the pots the guys that had their tags were getting action.

Our Veteran volunteer Dennis had a particularly awesome day. Nate gave him one of his patented spinners and a few pointers and sent him out on the water. A few minutes later we all heard a noise from the bay. It sounded like cold blooded murder, but it was just Dennis letting out his adrenalin after getting his first kayak salmon. A beauty 37 inch 30lb king. Then he went out after lunch and boated a coho like it was no big deal.

Thanks to all the Veterans and Volunteers for being flexible on the venue change and for making it out there with us.

This event this wraps up our 2014 schedule. From the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU to ALL the volunteers that helped make this such a successful year for Heroes On the Water. Thanks to all the Veterans that made it out with us, we hope you had an awesome time and please help spread the word.

If you are looking into or curious about volunteering next year, shoot us a message or speak with some of our current volunteers about it. It is a great way to give back and a it is a lot of fun.

I think I was about 1/4 mile away when Dennis let out his rather enthusiastic yell fighting his fish. Sounded like he was right next to me though!  Congrats on a great Nook!

Wow, great job on the Salmon.  That chinook is a beast.

No need to be afraid of the Willamette River near George Rodger's park.   On Saturday,   I fished the area between the Oak Grove boat ramp and Hog Island with my son and we picked up a dozen or so bass in about two hours.      As fun as bass can be, I wish I had been salmon fishing.

It was pretty awesome watching Dennis fight and land that fish.  For a while he looked like he was going to loose it, but he managed to get control of the fish and brought in in like a pro.
From someone who as 5 ft from Dennis, that was not a yell that was a very exuberant scream of joy.

Exuberant bellow may best describe our friends expression. It was a great day on the water. Everyone was happy.

I want to thank all of the volunteers that came out. As always you were all wonderful ambassadors of both NWKA and the Portland area.

I want to thank all of the angling community for their amazing support of the Portland chapter. This was my last event as part of the leadership of Heroes on the Water-Portland.  (My wife and I are retiring to cereal Oregon) You have made me proud to call you friends and fellow fishing addicts.

Thanks,

First off - much thanks to Steve, Anthony, and the rest for all of your hard work organizing each of these HOW outings this past year.  Things don't always go as planned, but you guys do a great job putting these together so that we can support our injured vets!

Thought the crabbing wasn't great, Saturday was amazing - from what I heard from our vets, they had a wonderful time.  Neither of my vets, Pete and Michael, had been crabbing before, much less off of kayaks.  I thought they handled themselves very well, and both had a great time.

For me personally, it was great to help these guys out - and to be there with the net assist and bonk for Dennis' afternoon coho was pretty cool.

Finally, the grand finale ranks up there with anything I've seen out on the water.  Late in the afternoon, after the vets had left, a few of us were still out there trying to get our first or second salmon, ready to call it quits for the day.  Nate alerted us to a crazy scene across the bay - salmon jumping everywhere - prompting a location switch over to the action.  Though I didn't hook into any, the combination of strong outgoing tide, fairly consistent s-sw wind, and coho launching everywhere was absolutely amazing.

Thanks to all for a great day!

-Sam
