Title: Kids Kayaks?
Post by: C_Run on December 15, 2021, 09:34:13 AM
Does anyone have any experience and recommendations for a kids sit on top kayak?  I see that there are various 6' models for small kids. Our one grandkid is about ready to have his own. He's interested for sure.

Oldtown Autopilot so you can control where they go from the palm of your hands. HAHAHA

On a serious note. How old are the kids and estimated height?

I remeber my friend in CA had a couple for his kids that seemed to work well, I think they were called Dolphin or maybe Sun Dolphin. Light, basic, but comfy, and pretty sure they had molded rod holders. I am guessing he got em at Walmart.

We bought our kids the 6' Lifetime Wave kayaks when they were little. Got them at Costco for about $100 ea. They were durable and stable.  We hauled those things all over the place.  I think they were rated for about 150lbs.  They were not made for super comfort or fishing though, but they got us where we needed to go and the kids would usually want to use them as swim platforms anyway.  We definitely got our use out of them.  I think I ended up selling them for about half the price we paid for them.

There seems to be more variety out there now.  I still don't hesitate to recommend the Lifetime kayak for a durable budget friendly kid (or even adult) starter kayak.  When my oldest grew out of the Wave, we got her a 10' Lifetime.  It's not sleek or fast, but super stable.  My youngest inherited my 11' Lifetime fishing kayak.

Here are a couple of old pics from Lake McDonald (Glacier NP)

Thanks for the replies. Probably the Lifetime one will do. He will be 4 by the time summer rolls around. He's already been whitewater rafting a bunch of times with his folks and has a little dry suit of his own and been doing swimming lessons since his "infant survival" classes. Got to incorporate some fishing now.

We bought our grands the Lifetime kayaks this summer, in pink for the girls of course. They were out of stock in most places but we ordered them online from Home Depot of all places.

Next time you're down this way, let me know.  I have an 8-foot Sun Dolphin cluttering up the garage.  You can have it (and I deliver).

And the best part is it's yum-yum yellow...

That's real generous, Tinker. I'll call pretty soon.
