Red, right, return. Learn how to read navigation markers. Not only will you know if you are in a traffic lane, if you ever find yourself behind the wheel of a larger craft you won't end up like this guy that whiffed the entrance to Yaquina Bay and scrap heaped his sailboat.

Got curious and found the nav chart for that location (http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/18581.shtml), looks like that is a pretty narrow approach.   Where did this boat end up at?  On the beach north of the entrance jetties?    Hate to do that phone call to the insurance agent...

It's almost always the north side.

I really don't understand why kayakers (and all other user groups) aren't required to take boaters safety. Nearly all of the content is beneficial. Hell, they even have a whole section for kayaks in it.

All boaters who operate a motorboat over 10 horsepower and youths 12-15 operating a power boat of any size are required to take an approved boating safety course and apply/carry a boater education card.

Youth must be 12 or older to get a boater education card.

Youth 12-15 can operate a boat of 10 hp or less without an adult.

Youth 12-15 may operate a boat of more than 10 hp if accompanied by an adult 16 or older (18 or older for a personal watercraft) who has a boater education card.

A person 16 or older will need a boater education card to operate a powerboat (including a PWC) greater than 10 hp.

COST: One-time fee of $10.

The Oregon boaters card is a joke from an educational standpoint. It's a revenue generator. If you really want to learn boating, take a class from the Power Squadren or coast guard auxiliary.

I second that , you can take the boaters card test on line..... And anyone of your friends can sit down in front of your computer and type away for you.

Who actually has a friend that would sit through it for them?

And it's also not a complete joke, as your typical $300 kayak owner knows NOTHING about navigation, safety, courtesy, etc. These are the people most at risk as well.

Red, right, return.

Assuming you're in an IALA B part of the world. ;D

"I left the red port" also works in IALA B. (Meaning as you're leaving the port and heading to sea, red buoys will be on your left or port side. Also, port is the left side of the boat and is marked with red lights.)

If ya really want to know your shit get a Chapman Piloting & Seamanship book and read a chapter or two in your spare time. You can probably find an older edition for beans if you look around. I used to be a Navigation Specialist and Master Helmsman in my Navy days and this book is by far the most comprehensive collection of knowledge on this subject I've ever seen.
The American Practical Navigator is also a very comprehensive book on seamanship and navigation and is available for free download at http://msi.nga.mil/

When I took it i recollect all of about 20 minutes and didn't have much in the way of needing to read anything I didn't already know... Guess I'm not a complete dolt, but I can forsee the guy that takes all his drunk buddys fishing doing the test for them so he has more hands to operate the boat even though he himself is likely incompetent to operate said power boat.... Don't forget the dad that just gives his kid everything he wants no questions asked, he'd do it so junior can loaf off somewhere! I'm just saying if you have to hand it to operate a powerboat of size and it costs money then it should be just like a drivers license and require you to sit infront if the official take it your self then get in a boat with said official and prove your not a complete and deadly dolt.
