Title: Henry Hagg Lake Monday, Feb 19
Post by: Wilfite on February 13, 2018, 12:40:12 PM
Hi y'all,

Planning to go fish Hagg Lake on Monday the 19th (thanks for the day off Prez. Washington and Lincoln).  Was going to go Saturday, but the weather forecast shows rain most of the day except between 1 and 4.  I'm not a crazy early riser, so will probably arrive ~9AM.  Anyone interested in joining?

KR's,
Tony

Ok, this friday looks like better weather.  I'll be going friday the 16th instead.  Let me know if you want to join and we can meet up at the ramp.

Good luck! Make sure to tell us how you did. I wish I could get out this weekend but it's probably not in the cards.

FWIW, they stock it with 18,000 trout the following week. :)

Monday looks to be windy and 10 degrees colder than Fri or Sat, and the kayak festival thing is on saturday so I'm going tomorrow instead.  You probably don't have fri off either, but just in case.... :-)

I do but I've been sick for a few days.  If I've shaken the cold off by morning I might even be able to talk my better half into joining as well.

Actually it looks like they stocked it earlier this week.

More fish!! Just in time to cast your poles during Free Fishing Weekend. Desert Springs Trout Farm has stocked our lake with fish raised in artesian spring water which, according to a DSTF employee, gives them a red meat versus white meat. On Tuesday they delivered 18,400 legals, 800 trophy, and 400 trophy+ size fish. Land a beauty and let us post it on our page!

Hey Matt, where'd you come across that info?  I don't see it anywhere on the ODFW page.

The Hagg Lake facebook page posted it along with pictures.

Man now I’m itching to get out there and give it a shot. Monday’s saying 5mph wind might have to get out and send it

Well it was a nice day to paddle :-)  I got skunked.  Yippiekaiyak got one and lost one late in the day.  Really strange for a lake recently stocked.  I fished for bass the first couple hours, but the water was still a little cold and they weren't staging yet.  Switched to trout later In the day but by then the bite seemed to have stopped.

Obviously this padawan still has much to learn.

Typically it takes a few days to a week for the fish to spread out through the lake once stocked.  If fishing before then, stick close to the boat ramps (its where they dump them) and fish shallow.  Usually only a few feet from shore.  Once the fish spread out then they can be caught on the troll down by the dam and around the paddlecraft launch area.  Hope this helps for the next trip.  👍

That's pretty much what we did.  It was a really strange day compared to other stock days when I've been there, especially considering it was supposedly 18k fish.  The weather changed from drizzle and windy to calm and sun breaks and the bite turned off.  I may try it again with fly gear to see if I have better luck.  I've had some pretty good fish after stocking on fly gear.  I opened up one bigger fishes belly and it had about fifteen little twigs in it so maybe they're after bugs. :)

Interesting...  Maybe it has to do with where they came from?  I don't think Desert springs Trout Farm is your typical state run trout stocking facility.  Typically the meat on stockers isn't pink like they are saying on the Facebook post.

The little guy that I had to keep (was bleeding) was rather pink also.  Smoked up really nicely. :)

Good to hear.  Might be some worthwhile tablefair to keep and not just chase for AOTY points.
