Title: Anybody fish the Willy lately?
Post by: henney on May 17, 2018, 09:11:46 PM
I know the river is all the way up into the dog park at Sellwood, but I'm in town for a couple of days and I'm fishing either Sellwood or Cathedral in the morning.

Any relevant intel would be greatly appreciated.

I went Wednesday in that area. River was completely empty.  Good vis on the water but very little current.  No bites for me, but seeing how i am zero for zero a couple years running, I wouldn't put any stock in my lack of success.

Yeah, it was dead out there today. There were a few power boats out, but no action and lots of garbage in the water.

Checker at Cathedral had 7 for 22 boats. I'm headed there tomorrow, but hopes aren't terribly high.

With this backed-up water, I have been getting all of my bites on 360/3.5's with just 18 feet of line out. Also, I have been fishing way out towards the middle of the channel. A lot of people have been complaining about the conditions, but fish shallow and grind away and there are bites to be had. I hope this helps.

Was wondering when you were going to show up with a fish!

I ran the 360/3.5 program anywhere from 22-32 feet at Sellwood and St Johns on Friday/Saturday mornings with not a single nibble to show. Having used up my 2-day non resident license, I will now place my tail between my legs and head back to the sound.

I would like to encourage anyone who has all but given up on fishing the Willamette for spring chinook to give it another try. It is getting pretty darn lonely out there. I got out today and was pounced on within the first five minutes, so there has to be a decent amount of fish still out there right? I've seen a lot of glum faces on the guide boats, and fish-checkers with a lot of extra time on there hands, but if you believe, and you have the work ethic, and a 360 degree flasher and a 3.5 spinner and 18 feet out on the counter, there is hope, trust me!

I saw a rather large bull sea lion in about that much water as I was pulling out Saturday.

Nice fish!
