Title: Saturday?
Post by: Beer_Run on February 21, 2023, 05:37:22 PM
Tempting the weather gods here. Anyone else looking at Saturday out of Fogarty? Might be a bit chilly, but the conditions look fishable.  Thoughts?

I've been looking at it and was about to ask the same question. Don't want to miss one like in December. If conditions hold for Saturday, I'm into it. What are other people's thoughts?

Not gonna hold my breath, since it's sandwiched in between two storm fronts. But I'm watching it!

I am in with the eager masses hoping for calm seas!

Looks promising but as Clayman said it is sandwiched between two storms so who knows how it actually materializes. I am looking at the secondary swell of 2.5ft coming from the same direction as primary but with shorter period. Wonder how much it's going to add to the overall wave height.

Tempting, like a mirage in the desert, but a little too cold and fleeting for me. Looking forward to living vicariously. Good luck and stay safe.

Thinking I might do Depoe on Sat.

Was wondering if anyone knew anything about crabbing off of Depoe? I have somewhere between 150-200' of line on my trap, and it's weighted pretty well.

With temps in the low 20s and little snow melting between now and then, I am guessing I will be stuck in the valley for the weekend.

quite a bit of snow has fallen out here on the coast.   I am at Netarts and have over 6 inches of snow and it is still snowing hard.  Given the forecast for cold temps,  it is likely to not melt any time soon.  I suspect the Coast Range is a mess.

edit:   measured 8 inches at Netarts Bay RV Park

An easy 3-4 inches in Newport this morning. Still looking at a 4-5 ft swell and cold temps on Saturday. I'll probably skip it unless it really flattens out and the temps warm up a bit.

Yeah, with the potential road conditions, I am going to pass.

10 inches in Idaville

Well ya, if you measure it lengthwise, but how deep is it?

Good point, nobad. You can bet that if it's sticking that deep on a vertical plane....it's too deep to drive. I will be staying home Saturday unless conditions improve.

So.... just checked again. Forecast still looking. Sweet!

Now check Trip Check....... Not so sweet. 20 miles of black ice!

Yeah Drifter.. That's my main worry too. The road over. I'm still undecided though.

I was resigning myself to steelhead fishing in freezing water tomorrow, but now NOAA is predicting 3' @ 14 seconds? They were calling for 5 footers earlier today.

Better get my gear ready, just in case  ::).

I’ll be playing in the bay in the morning. I’ll be on 69. Grab a sabiki if the ocean doesn’t work out and load up on some magic herring

I went steelhead fishing instead. Ocean looks nice today. Depoe would've been doable for sure. Maybe Fogarty too, though there is a long-period swell that hits the beach every couple minutes.

I caught a couple nice steelhead in suboptimal conditions, so I'm happy with my decision  ;D.

Thanks for the conditions report and nice going with the steelhead!

Ended up doing Winchester bay for the first time ever.

Was a lil cold n windy, but very doable.

Got five keeper crabs, and must have thrown back 3 times as many females and small guys. Was the most loaded my trap has ever been.

One decent BRF and three babies, and 4 decent perch.

Not the best day ever, but also far from the worst. I bet Depoe/Fogarty was great fishing,  did anyone end up going?

Curious about the herring report. Where they already in the Bay?

The reports I'm seeing is that they are in Yaquina Bay and the sea lions are chasing them around.

I peeked at Cape Kiwanda camera few times on Saturday morning and saw at least 5 kayakers get out. Hopefully we hear a report from one of them?
