Howdy everyone. I spent my early life fishing mangrove islands from a sitontop. I’ve lived in Portland for about 15 years now.  Over the last couple of years I’ve wanted to get back into the game and start fishing the ocean. I’m looking to meet some folks who are willing to help me get into fishing in areas like PC or Depoe. Etc. I finally got my kayak delivered last year after a wild time with deliver issues. I’m working on finishing my setup on my Vibe shearwater 125.

I heard at one point there were some meetups at the Lucky Lab. Can someone let me know if that still happens? I’d love to meet up and pick some brains and learn more about fishing the PNW from a yak. Thanks for letting me join the group.

Welcome to the forum, FloridaJoe!

It's a little early in the season for many opportunities to get out on the ocean, but they will come. There are a few guys who will advertise that they're planning on heading out the next day or whatever, and you can usually take that as an invitation to join in. Most guys are open to help out a newcomer as long as they show up with a PFD and proper attire for ocean fishing, which is a dry suit or full wet suit or dry top & waders.

I haven't seen an invitation to a social at local pub for a few years, but maybe it's time to revive that. There are occasional kayak fishing seminars at Next Adventure, which is a good place to meet locals. Keep an eye out for those.

Welcome aboard! The water here is a little cooler than in the Mangroves.

Welcome to the NWKA forum FloridaJoe.  Be sure to utilize the search feature as there is a treasure trove of great information on the site.  I encourage to check out the safety aspects due to the cold waters of the Pacific NorthWest.

I will definitely be checking out all the info. I’m fully prepped and ready. I run a wet suit and splash gear at times. I’ve participated in cold water swim rescue training and spent the last 10 years on the rivers out here. I’m sure the ocean is a different beast. I appreciate everyone looking out. I’ll bet some folks underestimate the conditions and get into some trouble quick.

I spend half of my time in SoCal, part of my time in PNW, then a few weeks out of a year in Port St Lucie. It is different than fishing the Mangroves, but it's definately fun. Later in the season I would definitely go out in Tillamook bay or Pacific city
