Next week, my family and I will be vacationing on Lummi Island, off of Bellingham, WA.   I will be renting a tandem kayak for the week to do some touring with my wife. We are hoping to work in some fishing while on the water. I am not a newbie, doing most of my fishing off of La Jolla, in San Diego.

Can anybody give me some tips on fishing the NW from a kayak? I haven't seen the kayak, but I believe it is probably a sit-in w/o rodholders. Is it possible to troll in one of these?  I will be bring along a couple of 8 1/2' Kenai Specials w/Calcutta 250's (30# spectra).  Any suggestions for terminal gear and types of artificials to use?

We will be staying on the Hales Passage side of the Island (facing Bellingham).  Unfortunately, fishing for salmon, and I think lings, will still be closed.  Any recommendations (on either side of the island) where to fish?  or crab?

Thanks in advance for any advice.  I am looking forward to a fun-filled vacation!

Lings is closed.  Salmon is closed on the Bellingham Bay side of Lummi, but I think it is open on the west side.  I've never fished the area.  I'd suggest mooching with a cutplug herring or jigging with a Pt Wilson Dart, Zzinger, or Buzz Bomb.  Your target is king salmon.

Salmon is open on the west side of the island. I agree with Allen's advice on either mooching herring or jigging.

Crabbing may be your best bet, especially if your staying on the beach and can watch your gear. (There are pot pirates out there, unfortunetly.) You want a sand bottom (for Dungies), hopefully with eelgrass around. Either side of the north end will probably be best. (The south end is steep and rocky.)

Good luck!
