Title: I think this one is going to spell trouble for some Lings
Post by: surf12foot on May 27, 2021, 08:40:04 PM
Nor Cal kayakers had a thread about an eel fly pattern for Lings. After reading about it and seeing it in action in the testing kiddie pool, I decided to make one. So here it is- 6/0 hook, 1/10 oz. dumbbell eyes and a just shy of 9 inches yumminess.

You should use that to give Nobaddays some competition in the AOTY fly category. Some pretty nice fly fishing prizes.

Maybe next year plus right now the ocean is turning over and the wind factor is killing everything

That's a lot bigger than any streamer I have ever tied.  Very nice!

Used them before and did pretty good,( caught blacks, lings and greenlings) made some with coneheads too. As for the book-Fly fishing the Pacific Inshore: Ken Hanley is the author and you should find it on Amazon if it's still in print.

I have some ling flies that stretch almost 14 inches with some striped bass flies in the 11- 12 inch class.

Thanks for the book reference.  I found a used hardcover on Amazon for $20 with shipping and ordered it.  I have been planning to fly fish the Texas inshore but never really considered the offshore PNW.

There is not a lot about fly fishing off the Oregon coast so you come up with patterns based off of lures or take some of the California, Texas coast people fly patterns and modify them to your needs. Another book that you might like is-Sea Flies by Jay W. Nicholas.

Here are some more marine worms fly patterns. They range from 1- 1/2 to 7 inches

If any drop of water were fishable down here, I'd have already overtaken Nobaddays.  I want that Moonshine rod.  >:D

The way things are shaping up, 2021 is looking to be like 2017 and ODFW will have closed recreational fishing for bottomfish before we see even "pretty sporty" conditions down here.  Heck, even the lakes and rivers are taking a beating from the wind.
