Wondering if anyone has used the rib cage meat From rockfish filleting as bait to tip a jig or use as cut bait for halibut fishing?

I just filleted several rock bass and when you trim the rib cage off the filets, it has a silver skin and seems like it would be a perfect “bite sized” morsel for fishing bait.

I froze them in small packages to try...just wondering if someone has already had experience with this.

Thanks,

Never tried, but I feel it should work to tip jigs or as bait.

This was our rig on a charter in Homer a few years ago and it was effective. It was pink salmon rather than rockfish.

Thanks for the phot C_Run...that is exactly what I’m thinking.

10oz jig, large twister tail and some rockfish belly to get them interested.

Maybe Memorial Day the swell will cooperate out of Sunset bay and I can test it out.

I used halibut skin and rib cage on the last trip and it certainly didn't hurt.  Think it adds some movement, scent, and attraction.  The halibut skin is super tough too, so stayed on the hook well.

Anything smelly! It's all about scent.

On the east coast growing up we'd hook flounder bellies onto small jigs for sea trout and flounder.  The bellies worked great with a little meat left on them for scent since the skin is so tough.  The bait could get thrashed 20 times or so before the bait would come off or need to be changed.  I am guessing halibut belly would be similar, but don't have direct experience.

I prefer tuna bellies or shad because they're both really oily.
