I went to the Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir to fish for kokanee, and ended up in the middle of a carp orgy.  While I was trolling for kokes, I saw a lot of big splashes along the shore near the great blue heron rookery, went over to investigate, and discovered that the splashes were created by pairs of carp thrashing around on the surface in shallow water, presumably spawning. Some of them were two feet long, and they were jumping all around me; one pair crashed into my kayak.  I tried to snap photos of them in the act of thrashing with little success; it was like trying to snap pictures of lightning striking.  Eventually I learned to watch for boils in the water, presumably carp foreplay, get my camera pointed and zoomed at the boil, and try to snap a picture when they splashed on the surface, presumably a carp orgasm. Probably accompanied by carp cries of passion (oh yes yes yes baby!), and followed by carp smoking cigarettes. Only about five percent of my shots came out at all, and most of them are mediocre, particularly since I usually hit the shutter too late. I should have tried shooting video.  I suspect that the porn industry has a term for this kind of photo.

Friend of mine turned me on to a great app for just such an occasion. It is on the iPhone and guessing there is an equivalent Android app.  It is called Video2Photo. Instead of trying to get the one picture, you shoot video and the app presents it frame by frame. You can view the video to get close and then go frame by frame and once you find a good one you can do tons of stuff with it. Works great for whales outside PC
