On Saturday I fished the Helena Regulating Reservoir.  It rained most of the day, and it was hard to find the kokanee, because the lake had turned over a day or so earlier, and the kokanee had moved to new locations.  But I managed to catch 8 kokanee, one of them 16 inches long, the others in the 13.5"-14.5" range. They'll get bigger as the summer progresses.

On Sunday my niece-in-law and her fiancé stopped at our cabin for a visit.  When they arrived, they told us that when they were a few miles north of Seeley Lake, a mini-van driving in front of them hit a deer in the head, breaking off one of its developing antlers, which were in velvet, and killing it.  I asked if any of the people who stopped at the time of the incident took the deer.  They said nobody had.  I grabbed a plastic tarp and some gloves I always keep in my vehicle, bundled them into their car (mine was full of fishing stuff), and we drove back to the point of the accident.  Nobody had grabbed the deer, which was a pretty nice buck, and had very little damage, aside from being dead.  We loaded the deer in their vehicle, took it back to our cabin, and skinned and quartered it.  We haven't found any damage to the meat at all.  I gave my niece-in-law and her fiancé half the deer as a finders fee.

At least that's legal in MT.  Not legal to claim road kill like that in WA.  Which seems like such a waste.

Effective July 1 it becomes legal.  Under certain circumstances.

Come on up Shannon--- I have a 2 acre pasture and another acre by the house. We can fit your 5th wheel right in the driveway , hook you up with power and water too.
And there are lots of deer and elk up this way . Had 4 deer in the pasture this morning. Didn't see any horns-- but hey--- if you're looking for road kill--- we can probably make that happen.
Life is short---live it tall.

She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Mojo

Game warden " did you hit the deer off of the shoulder or in the road"
Mojo
"As you can clearly see the deer IS off of the shoulder so that's where it landed !?!?"

Mj

They may not, as long as Mojo lives here.

As I reported at the beginning of this thread, in May I picked up a roadkilled deer in great condition.  In October I picked up two more roadkilled deer, one on October 9 and the other on October 21.  They were about 50 yards apart on the same street in Missoula.  A friend who lives in the area reported both of them to me, and I zoomed over and grabbed them.  One hindquarter was messed up on the first deer, but nothing else was damaged.  And the second deer only got hit on the head, and the meat was completely undamaged.  So I have a pretty good supply of meat in my freezer.  Now the rifle season has started, so I'll see if I'm as effective at shooting deer as I am scooping them up from the side of the road.
