When I'm on the ocean, especially several miles out for Coho, I carry a Personal Locater Beacon, a handheld VHF with built-in GPS, a handheld GPS chartplotter, a swim fin and plenty of energy snacks and water.

Uh . . . why only one swim fin?  Do you only have one leg?

One swim fin is a whole lot better than none.  Two would take up too much space and weight. 

One swim fin will more than double your speed.  We used to carry a single when performing water assist/safety in Hawaii.  How did I forget about that?
