Not a hot bite today, but not terrible either. Scored my first keeper in 100 feet, NW of the beach around 0715. Trolled around for a while just to lose a fish and release a wild coho. Other guys scratched up a fish here and there. Good amount of bait out there, looked like herring, but there didn't seem to be many salmon on them. I went as far west as 180 feet, had a drive-by at 170. Settled onto the reef to give my legs a break and pull on some lingcod. Had to move a bit to get away from yelloweye. Eventually, I found a spot that kicked out two 32" lings for me. Trolling on the way back, I hooked and lost another coho in 100 feet. Watched Bob land a limit in 70-80 feet...apparently, the afternoon fish only wanted a Spinfish and not a Brad's  ::). On the beach around 2:30pm. Beautiful day! Just wish the salmon were chewing a bit more.

South current was pretty stiff at 1.2mph. I usually do terrible salmon fishing here with a south current, so the results we had today were kinda good given the conditions.

nice, good to hear of fish being caught.

my legs are still feeling my battle against that south current plus south wind, when I was at 180' off GP, oh how I would have rather been heading for Fogarty and not 'uphill' to DB. lol

Good job Clayman!
A day without fishing probably wouldn't kill me,
but why risk it?

Hey, that is me with a keeper coho! I don't catch many salmon so I get pretty excited!

Sure was a beautiful day out on the pond.

I had a rough outing on gear. Snagged up and lost numerous jigs in the rocks. Got broke off by what must of been a BIG lingcod. Descending bis ass yelloweye is a pain.

Pretty happy about getting my 10th species on the board for AOTY!  Now get some upgrades and I will do alright.

Great day on the water!

Good seeing you out there Chris. I caught this one after you left (3rd pic). 8/13 - last day for sport fishing cabezon retention, so I decided to keep it.

I haven’t seen anything about cabezon retention closing.  Where did you see that?
Being retired, they pay me when I go fishing, therefore I am kind of a professional fisherman.

No, that was the only lead that survived the day in my kayak. Thank you!

There's nothing on the ODF&W web pages, nor have I received any emails from their bottomfish bulletins.

Was a grind of a day. Lost a salmon shortly after I saw Chris land his at 100'. Had another drive by shortly after and then trolled around with zip for a couple hours. Decided to head out to a raft of PBs at 200' and rolled into a decent bite. Saw 6-7 fish caught including me getting one small wild fish. Another drive by and then it died. Headed back in and stopped by where Chris landed his lings. Broke off a Lancer on the rocks and decided to call it a day. Trolling back to Fogarty and shortly before I was going to pull the gear in at 70' hooked a fish. Lost it after a short fight. 2 minutes later another take down that felt like a rockfish. Turned out to be a decent hatchery coho. Started trolling in a circle from 75 to 85 feet. Another drive by and then hooked a really nice hatchery fish and a very long day ended with two fish in about 15 minutes. Gotta keep your line in the water!

I also ended up with a nice wild coho around the 70 to 80 ft mark on the way back in (released) and one hatchery from around 100 FOW to bring home. I've had a good track record of hooking fish on the way to/from deeper waters where others are fishing at Fogarty - as beer_run said - keep your line in the water.

Rockfishing was super hot - could have limited in 15 minutes likely if I wanted to fill my limit with all blacks, caught several doubles. I did bring home a 21"+ black, my biggest outside of Alaska. Spent some time farting around inside the bay at Fogarty for surf perch and greenling for AOTY - caught a greenling very quickly, but the little bugger flipped back into the salt as I was measuring it. Smart fish.

'Twas a lake out there, and many good folk from this forum were out there to enjoy it. Wonderful day, great company, and fish for the grill/freezer. What more could you ask for?

I just called ODFW & asked. You're right, cabezon is still open. I googled it on my phone after I caught that fish. Prob'ly info from a previous year.

so jealous...I have been stuck in Arkansas for the past two weeks for work and have missed the flat day opportunities for the ocean so far this year...here's to hoping there are more soon.  Good work!
