Title: Depoe minus tide news from today?
Post by: nomas on July 14, 2018, 04:33:27 PM
Anyone go out at depot this morning? Any idea if and around what time the hole became impassible with the minus tide?

Also, heading out a few miles to search for halibut along with salmon trolling in the morning if anyone is keen to pedal 15 ish miles.

I’ll plan on trying to launch before sun up to see if I can make it out before a restriction. Guess I should call them....haha.

Good site to bookmark to check for bar restrictions: https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/pqr/marine/BarObs.php

Depoe was closed to all rec boats until this afternoon.  And even then, it only opened for 34+ footers.  I keep checking the forecasts and buoys, but the best I can find is 5 feet @ 8 seconds.  Combine that with the waves bouncing off the cliffs, and it sounds like a rodeo to me.  I expect the bar to be restricted tomorrow with the minus tide.

That being said, Fogarty Creek launches best during low tides.  The shallow reefs will block the NW swells.  I *might* head up there tomorrow morning, depending on what the buoys are reading.  And even then, I'll be giving Fogarty a long hard look before deciding to commit.  But the minus tide would line up really well for an early launch and landing at noon.  I'd just be salmon fishing.

Coast guard phone line said the same (thanks for the link, by the way). Hm, long way to drive for a maybe launch.

Guess I’ll stand down. Thanks for the input.

Woke up at 0400, saw the buoy was reading 6 feet @ 8 seconds.  Went back to bed.  Bar restrictions to <20 foot vessels this morning.

Looks like restriction was lifted late morning and magicseaweed looks alright now, so I’m glad to hear it was not worth my drive this morning. Thanks for making me feel better, clayman.
