Title: So, How Many of Us......
Post by: yakinthesalt on April 17, 2024, 11:27:27 AM
I turned the Big Six Oh this past September, and its got me thinking.

In 2015 I got my first fishing Kayak, and dove head long into this amazing past time. After my first trip into the salt, Powerboat fishing was never to be good enough for me again, and I plan on fishing from the Tiny Plastic Ships for as long as the Good Lord will let me, hopefully well into my 70's or more.
so my question to you all is:

How many of us are 60 or over, and still fishing the Kayak?

I will be 63 at the end of May, no plans to slow down.  With chinook open again, I'm planning to go big on ocean salmon in July/August, plus as many bottom fishing/crabbing trips as possible out of Sunset Bay (starting this Friday/Saturday.  ;D).   Still hoping to get in on some stripers in the Smith but so far that's been a no go.

and definitely looking forward to fall salmon in the Siuslaw and coho lakes...

Pepper, however, is now 12.5yo and starting to show her age a bit, her eyes are cloudy and hearing not as good, but she still punishes me when I leave her home.  My goal is to take her with me to Simpson reef just one more time (she's been there 9 times since 2019 and over the Siuslaw bar twice).  I do expect her to be with me for all the fall salmon fun, anchoring down the rear deck of the Outback and getting splashed when I net a salmon right in front of her big nose.

cheers, roger

I'll be celebrating the 40th anniversery of my 21st birthday ;) on Sunday.
Feel younger and more alive out on the water as captain of my own little toy boat.

Not too far off. I will retire in just over 6 years at 60. I plan on winning the AOTY in 2031!

I've been doing this for 12 years. I'm now 68. I definitely pace myself more lately, trying to avoid lots of wind and strong currents. One knee just started doing some weird s*** which is concerning. However,  I don't expect to completely age out anytime soon. I think I am the only one left who uses a paddle.

Technically I'm in my 60th year but don't turn until November.  Got into this fantastic style of fishing only 3 years ago and plan on going until it doesn't make sense.  This will be an off year.  Completely tore my right long head biceps tendon last November.  It will not be repaired.  Working on the muscles around it for strength.  Hand surgery last December for a condition that takes months to heal.  Other hand to be done early may, so at this point maybe fishing late summer.  I don't ever plan on winning AOTY, but maybe AOTD once in s while.  Most fun I've ever had catching fish!

I don’t get to join the club until the end of the year, but this thread does give me a lot of inspiration and hope to be kayak fishing for many more years to come.

Then there's Art (upnorthtex). I think he was late '70's when I met him. He was inspirational with his ability and attitude.

First kayak was a 2016 Outback (at age 59) in the summer of 2017. Instantly hooked. Sold my 16ft Klamath and my first boat, a 1987 fiberglass drift boat and NEVER looked back. Upgraded to a 2019 Outback in 2019, which I still have for fishing/cruising with my better half and my son. Also use it for rolling on the way in at PC. In 2021 I picked up an Old Town Autopilot 120 which I absolutely love for any kind of fishing (except launch and land a PC). 66.3 years old at this point and have NO intent on slowing, much less stopping. Gas and a tray of herring is much cheaper than a shrink or a meditation class.

63 here, and I plan to drag my carcass out next week and get my yak wet again.  Back and knee issues last year so it will be the first time in quite a while...  With luck, I might even catch something!

Me, too. I have been kayak fishing for 12 years, and I am continuing this pastime for sure until one day I am fishing on my kayak but then all of a sudden I don't no longer move no more:-)

66, bought my first kayak 9 years ago. Will continue until I can’t anymore. My favorite place in the world: on a kayak at Pacific City!
