I might go. I want to get a small harpoon set up. Do you think they will have fish finders there?

Yup. They will have pretty much everything. Maybe not something specific but it's pretty diverse.

Let me know. I should be able to get time almost anytime for a few hours.  Busy as heck, but not a deadline driven week.

I'll be going. There's a couple of seminars I'm interested in attending. Plus, I have a whole list of items to look for show deals on, comparing prices against online options... Provided my responsibilities don't get in the way of my plans for some fun, I would enjoy a cup of coffee if we're there at the same times.  I'll probably attend one of John Beath's halibut seminars, and maybe the Fish & Game presentation on King salmon fishing in lower Cook Inlet...  Just now going through the supplement in the Daily News.  Friday afternoon/evening and Saturday are the only times I have clear to attend.

I'll PM my contact info. You can text me when you get to the show Friday, and I'll buy the java if I'm in the Sully.

OK,  I haven't met any of you all yet (except Rudy briefly in Seward) but I'm all kayak'd up and ready to fish.  I'd love to get together and get some AK yak fishing tips.  I've done yak fishing in WI and MO, but never big water.   I'll be at that the Sportsman's Show on Saturday and could do coffee.

Looking forward to tight lines and sleigh rides.......

Pumped we are seeing more interest up here in Alaska!!!

Gents,
Just returned from the Sportsman's Show, though I'll return tomorrow just for grins.  For what it's worth, I learned that the Penn/Abu Garcia rep at the B&J booth will deal, and ended up shaving enough to make it worth while to pick up a Penn Defiance 40 Level Wind reel and an Ugly Stick Tiger Lite rod.  Not a great bargaining environment, but chat them up enough and you can wheedle down the prices about 10% more.

ALSO, for those of you in the market for a fish finder, the guy with the LH French Co who is repping Hummingbird there will be selling a 345i for $200 at the end of the show on Sunday.  That's a pretty good deal, no matter. His booth is in the Sully.

Saw another reel at Mountain View's booth that I really liked: Shimano Torium. Anybody got some intelligence on that reel's performance to share?

Lastly, don't bother asking the fella at the Anchor Point Chamber booth when the derby will be held.  He looked at me like I was from Mars, and then said it was probably going to be held 2 weeks before the Fourth of July.  Hello?  I think the interpretation to that is, "I don't know."

I tried at 4pm and couldn't find parking. A guide that works out of anchor point told me the derby is may 12 but he is confirming.

looks like you're set for reel / rod now??  The Torium is a very good reel, Shimano one of the top 3 names in reels for reliability and customer service.

I figured it was a good, serviceable outfit to start the season -- and yet I wouldn't be crushed to lose it to Neptune if I did something stupid on the water.  Won't trust myself until I feel like I've gotten dialed in on this style of fishing. ;D

I'm still looking for a few items, and there are some seminars tomorrow that I'll attend. Let me know if you're in the house tomorrow.

Woohoo!!! Let the season begin!!!!!!!!

Well it was a nice show, but no outstanding deals.  I did buy a jigging rod from B&J.  Also picked up a pair of waders for the wife. I spoke to the Kokatat guy at Alaska Raft and Kayak. I think I'm gonna go ahead and get the new T3 Tropos Supernova Angler Kayak Semi Drysuit. For the price diffidence it seems like it might be worth while (I have none at the moment.)

Anybody else using a Kokatat semi dry suit?

If you're an REI member, you can get 20% off with your coupon (or just member number online) between now and April 15 on a Kokatat semi dry suit.  I use one, goretex highly recommended -- but maybe that's not so important if you're not a middle-aged woman subject to personal microclimates...  Semi dry is perfect, since you're never without wearing your PFD to hold your neck/head above the drink. At most, a couple tablespoon of water might penetrate. And so much more comfortable than latex gaskets around your neck, I think.

Pleasure to meet you, your friend and The Famous Kardinal. I am seriously outclassed in this crowd.

I have that suit too. the T3 angler that is. I haven't used it though so can't comment on it personally but there is enough positive reviews on it that I feel like I made a good choice. Also watch for sales online. Not to long ago I was finding them for less than 500 online.

Oh yeah fishergal, what exactly was that fish finder that guy is gonna blow out? Was it a combo gps unit?

I went there today, sure was busy. I didn't get anything, and honestly wasn't interested in much that was there. I swung by the humminbird guy but I didn't buy anything from him. Afterwords I went to B&J's and got a Folbe Rod holder setup and a Kone zone flasher.

Probably best information to come out of the show for me was that Aquetec is now operating out of Whittier as Whittier Water Taxi -- with very decent rates into PWS.  Rates are all per group up to 6 souls, and range from $360 to Decision Point to $2K out to Green Island -- and 46 other bays and islands in between.  This guy used to operate a water taxi out of Seward, and I've used him in the past to get out to Aialik for a few trips.  Very good service, very dependable -- very good captain. Nice way to get your yaks out into some amazing, remote places where lings, 'buts, silvers and rockfish can be had -- even by one such as me.

Here's a nice map of their various drop-off points out of Whittier.  Good for dreaming, if nothing else.

@ AKFishergal
Well darn. Now I'm confused  ;D   The light weight Gore-tex paddle suit is about the same price at REI (with the 20% discount) as the T3 Super Nova.....  hmmm....

Opinion poll?
