Title: Ryumeister signing in...
Post by: Ryumeister on April 12, 2017, 08:27:51 PM
So this is Kardinal_84.  I am signing up my son Ryu so he can enter the youth AOTY and since he finally kept a flip phone a year without losing it, he gets to upgrade to a smartphone.

This year we both very much want to diversify our fishing so we are entering the AOTY to see how many species we can manage.

If you haven't met my son (currently age 12), he is getting to be quite the accomplished kayak angler.  He is currently on the Hobie Fishing team, Kokatat Fishing Team, Team Daiwa and sponsored by Alaska Raft and Kayak.

He won the 2017 Youth Division of the Homer Winter King Tournament. I think 39 youth anglers weighed in 7 fish.  He was the only one off a kayak.
Last year, he won the 2nd annual Barbie Rod Derby for Kayaks sponsored by RipnDrag.

Looking forward to a more diverse and interesting 2017 with him!!!

Welcome to the forum Ryu.  You may be the most well known new member I have seen.  I feel like I already know you through reading your dads post.

We are getting a good number of youth this year, so it is going to be fun watching the competition.

Welcome Ryu!  Your dad is very proud of you, hope you enjoy being part of the NWKA community. You're an inspiration for many young (and old) anglers. Looking forward to some of your own posts!

Welcome Ryu!   It's about time you made it on here.  Hopefully, some day soon I'll get a chance to do some adventuring with you and your old man.

  Rudy,
It is always great to watch and even re-watch your Highlight of the Year videos. We feel like we are right there with you. Looking forward to many more in the years to come.
Ryu---- welcome to NWKA. Even if we've been following your exploits for a few years now. Have your dad get you your own GoPro so we can see your perspective in future adventures. Cause I can't think of too many more pinnacles for you to aspire to. Maybe a  100 pound halibut  ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::).
Both of you---- please keep bringing us along for the ride--- cause it is such a fun ride. And a big THANK-YOU for letting all of us tag along.

Thanks all for the awesome welcome for my son.  It amazes me to see what young kids can do if only given the opportunity.  I guess it shouldn't be surprising watching kids navigate all the buttons on a xbox one controller.

Ryu has been super well rounded. He ties is own gear, now lands his own fish, and he is a very proficient halibut filleter.  Now its forum participation, photo uploading, and the rest of the scary world of the world wide web.  I figure this is about as safe of a place to start as any.

So thanks in advance to everyone and I hope he gets more and more active as time progresses and becomes an asset to this board.

Ryu, what boat are you running ? Is that a Sport, or a Revo 11 ?

I am currently running a 2017 hobie outback with a 180 mirage drive. And I love the new reverse system and stability.

Heheh, I was wondering how long you could hold out before becoming an active member of the boards. Perhaps a bit of fatherly encouragement?....and I'll bet he bribed you by paying your AOTY entrance fee. LOL And a new smartphone too.  ;)

As you know I've followed you since you were a little squirt, so its nice to see you become a leader in your hobbies at this age. The videos of your accomplishments are a great incentive for lots of other young anglers to realize their own potential. I just loved the Barbie rod halibut handling the fish and harpooning at the same time. Even the big "kids" could have failed on that one.

Time for you to hook up with a big saltwater king along Whiskey Gulch that's headed for the Kenai this spring. Keep those hooks sharp!

Looking forward to fishin' with ya!

Savor every moment Dad! You have a few more good years before the hormones kick in.  ;) I've seen some master junior anglers in their day suddenly realize there are other "hobbies" more inviting at around 16. They eventually work through the temptations, some sooner than others. Ha.

P.S. As soon as ice out hit on the Kenai in Soldotna the other day there were seagulls flying the open water which is totally unusual. Either there is going to be an early smolt outmigration or perhaps an early hooligan run. Or perhaps an early caddis hatch. Saw two flying around the front yard this morning.  The lower river is still froze over at the Pillars and Eagle Rock.

Nice!!! I've read and seen alot of my 12 year old Hobie Team mate! Good luck with all the different species, doesn't seem like there will be much trouble finding a good selection where your at!

We have not been out fishing much no thanks to the weather and family schedule.  But Ryu makes a nice appearance in the March issue of Alaska Magazine.  Hasn't hit the shelf yet but hopefully I can link to it once its out.  Folks with a subscription should have gotten it already.
