You going to Alaska to fish? Right on!
-
Cool let do this
I’ve been so crazy bizzzzie haven’t had much time to think about it but I do have some ideas for this years tournament!!!!
The tournament is for halibut but any fish can win if it’s the biggest fish
-
I would like to alow ice fishing rods this year but if you use one it’s a 2 lb penalty what do you guys think about that
-
I am in.
-
Dates? I have quite a bit of company coming this summer which will make my kayak fishing days limited. I was wondering if you've picked a date yet, so I know whether or not to get excited about the derby!
-
Week of July 20th that wekend weather permitting

So that would be Saturday, July 21st?
Works for me.
-
Yep the 21st
-
Put me down for the Tourney !
As far as I know today I will be in AK and hopefully over my early season mistakes and ready for this... now to find a high quality Barbie rod... Ironman let me down and exploded last year, and the frozen backup rod burned out its drag in seconds.
Handlining halibut on light braid - room for improvement!
-

Sounds like a great time, I'll finally be a pseudo bachelor after sending my family off to Kodiak. I'll be down there, but don't think I'll mess with a barbie rod. Not confident enough with normal gear. ;-)
-
Wow Ripndrag! That is awesome.
For a variety of reason, I haven't been fishing much. I actually tried this weekend but ran into super thick fog and didn't want to get run over by a powerboat.
I still plan on putting the 6th annual Alaska Yak Classic together but need to do it later in the year. I am thinking in August or September.
Ryu and I plan to be there for this derby though! We will be out of practice but we have to get out and fish at some point! Thanks for putting this together!
-
I’m out of practice, too with building a place for my toys and lots of company already, but I have put everyone on notice that I will be at Whisky Gulch that weekend![emoji16]. I’m so excited to join you guys!

I'm bummed. Something has come up and I'm going to miss the Barbie Tourney. I was really gunning for that grand prize ;)
-
1 week from today this is my weapon this year
-
Ripndrag,
I have a few folks not on this forum asking about the time.
Any rules? Time?
-
Rules kiddie rods may change line Rudy what time are the tides hi lo on Saturday ?
-
The way I read the new emergency rules from Fish and Game, we can fish Kings at Whiskey G also this weekend??
-
Spoke with Mark AKA Ripndrag regarding the derby. Start time is 6am. Finish is 3:30pm. All kayaks welcome (even powered ones). You have to use a Kiddie rod. No ice fishing rods for example. Use whatever test you like. Mark has some really nice prizes lined up. Weather looks good so far!!!! C'mon!!!!! Let's fish!!!!!!
High tide at anchor point is 11:10am!!!
-
I'm in! Picked up a "sweet" Jurassic World kiddie rod at Bass Pro last night, actually has a fairly decent drag...butts will tell though. Looking forward to finally getting some time on the water and hanging out with good folks. Heading down Friday after work.
-
Just a shout out and thank you to next gen baits thank you for your sponsorship
They are donating a 100 dollar gift card thank you
-
I picked up a kiddie rod, not a lot of line capacity though, I assume folks fish fairly shallow to hopefully avoid getting spooled?
-
Ak fish on go respool with 20 lb braid it will help
-
At wiskey gulch now weather looks great hope everyone can make it this should be fun

Looks like everyone had fun.
Wondering...has anyone caught any actual good sized halibut yet out of WG this year? Wife and I fished it earlier this summer and tossed back the few we caught.
The collection pictured here looks like throw-back fish...and I realize I sound like a dick for saying that, but even 3 years ago, the fish from WG averaged much larger (or at least the pics showed them to be larger). I'm wondering if people are catching larger fish and not posting or if we are all resigned to take the small fish that are left in the Gulch...?
-
Looks like we have a starry flounder in the mix! Warming waters may be bringing them up from their normal California waters...maybe? But that second from left is definitely not a halibut. Looks like it's this flounder:

Shoot, with charter restrictions these days, I'll take what I can get! No gas, no oil, no $350+ charter fees.
-
That is a starry flounder I caught it I had the harpoon ready to go and yes a few nicer fish have been caught from kayaks this year here’s 1

I know a group that prefers to remain somewhat anonymous that managed a 125, 105, 80, and I think 50 all on one tide....off kayaks...in 20 to 30 ft of water.

We've been catching starry flounder for years and years while dipnetting the Kenai...the rest of those are most definitely halibut.
