RE:  Line weights... I am also on board with no limits for running line or leader.   I used 30# last year, because of low capacity on the Barbie Reel.... And the drag blew up and I had to hand line the thin chainsaw line up/.   I am thinking 20-30 this year to get my depths with low line drag in current.   When I tried to load 55 last year I didn't get anywhere near enough line on the reel and ended up taking it off and winding on the 30#.

I'm spooled up with 75 yards of 15# braid, so that 80-pounder will have a little room to run as long as the drag holds up.  I might need to get some deck hand gloves . . .

I am going to try #15 as well for the extra capacity.  I will use as heavy as leader as allowed by rules or the eye of the hook.

I'm stoked.  Got my rod and a new prescription of scopolamine :). This is going to be epic, at least in my dreams.

So just to get this straight about the rules.
Tourney is the 16th and 17th of July at whiskey Gulch.
You can only use kiddie poles with no modifications
Any size line and leader is allowed
Biggest fish wins
Next question, I am new to kayak fishing with most of my salt fishing either being in Seward or on charters. I know there are several places known as whiskey gulch, is this the one down by Homer/Ninilchick or inside the bay in Whittier?  Is there a campsite there with beach access to launch from? I know nothing about this spot other than it has some halibut there. ???

So is this thing legal for the tournament? Not that anyone has one, I just wanted to share. I haven't seen any mention of this crazy machine anywhere.

I'm super pumped to participate this year! I'll be heading down to Whiskey Gulch Thursday night.

What is the start time and endtime? Is there going to be a weighting station?

Should be a good one!  In the interest of self promotion...errr...I mean educational benefit of others... Here's a couple of videos of the Barbie rod in action.  A few things to be learned I think.

1) Carry a spare...I winched up the first small halibut by winding then  line around the reel spool manually.  It worked, but I wouldn't have been able to use it again I don't think.

2) You can get a BIG halibut up to the top.

Other lessons are in there... from my perspective at any rate....lol.
