Title: Columbia salmon reopens 9/11-9/13
Post by: Cackalacky on September 12, 2020, 09:24:47 AM
The columbia reopened for kings this weekend 9/11/2020-9/13

Buoy 10 (from the ODFW)
"September 11 – 13: Retention of adult Chinook (longer than 24-inches) and adult hatchery coho (16-inches and longer) allowed.  The daily adult bag limit is two adult salmon (Chinook and hatchery coho), only one of which may be a Chinook. All steelhead must be released."

I fished last weekend and it was very good. My GF and I took two big coho and a chinook home. ODFW just posted the stats and it was 1.76 Chinook, 3.21 coho and 0.01 steelhead caught per boat. :banjo:

I fished yesterday (9/11) afternoon too (3pm to 6pm), the smoke wasn't too bad, still hazy but I couldn't smell smoke.Unfortunatly on the WA side there was a nasty red tide. Didn't get anything but still marking fish and lots of bait around. I'd think if you can find some clear water you'll find some fish. I may go again Sunday and try some new spots looking for clear water. If anyone gets out and finds some clear water let us know (please and thank you).

I fished again Sunday 9/13 Buoy 10 on the WA side. I fished hard for 8 hrs, maybe one bite. The fog was thick, some smoke too in the afternoon. I was marking plenty of fish but couldn't make it happen. I'm thinking now maybe I didn't have enough weight on. I fished 10z and could get to the bottom, but maybe with more weight I could go faster and keep a better angle on my line. I'll try 12 to 20 oz next time. I would have been happy with either chinook or coho but I was really after chinook.

As far as tactics I mostly just cycled through different spots, depths, speeds and different colors of flasher and spinner. I didn't bring any bait. Maybe that would have helped? I also just stuck with a triangle flasher, didn't try a pro troll type flasher.

The few folks I spoke with weren't catching anything either. Maybe it'll open up again next weekend. Water temp was way down from last weekend. It was 67 to 70 the weekend of 9/5, and I saw everything from 54 to 64 yesterday. From what I saw on ifish people were doing well further upriver.

I fished the Bonneville Pool on Sunday for 2 hours in the dense smoke.  Had to use an N95 pressed up against my face with my buff, and with that gear on it wasn't too hard on my lungs.  Felt very creepy out there, mostly alone with less than 1/4 mile visibility.  There were lots of fish around but I couldn't get any of them to bite pulling plugs and spinners.

Nice report Cackalacky and accurately describes my experience on Saturday the 12th. The red water against smoky air gave HH an eerie feel. I’ve never seen as much bait in the shipwreck troll lane - must’ve been 50+ seals and sea lions and double that many diving pelicans working the bait. Caught jack coho out in the blind, but no keepers. Didnt mark many fish but rain and big tides may push more in.

Happy to post a report. The reports on here have saved me a lot of time and effort learning the PNW fisheries, trying to repay that a bit. Thanks wreglmed and Larry for your reports too. Nice to hear how others are faring out there. I'm hoping the tides/rain will improve things too wreglmed
