July 26th there's a derby right in Elliot Bay. I contacted the event director and we're cleared to participate in our yaks. $25 entry fee, cash prizes for top three fish (weight) $1500, $750, $500 and product for 4-10th place. Let's show them PB'rs what yak fishermen are made of!

I have not fished elliot bay before.  where are some good place to launch close to good fishing?

Alki Point in West Seattle is probably the best spot closest to where most guys fish the Bay.  There is a public boat ramp but in the past I've just found a handy, grassy spot off of Commodore Way to park and launch-there is lots of public access to the water here.

I'm thinking this year, of trying to intercept the kings as they round the tip of the Magnolia peninsula- which is directly across the Bay from West Seattle.  In this area there is a marina --just off the Magnolia Bridge, and before you reach it there is a public park on the water--just west of pier 90.

Only other place I can think of is the park, with public dock just south of the ferry terminal in downtown Seattle but lots of homeless wander this area and I would not be comfortable leaving gear untended here.

Good luck HH      ;D

Anyone down to give this a shot? It's a really easy place to fish that's really sheltered. It's like trolling a lake most days. Wouldn't mind having someone along. MattK you down to pull off another 25+ pounder? ;)

I"m in!  Should have the Revo fully pimped by then....

I used to live on Beach Drive just off Alki in the 80's, my favorite spot for big kings was....ooops!  Better keep the lip zipped, I might be fishing there!!  Years ago there was the Boeing Derby, also the Shuck's Million Dollar derby, where they tagged a couple coho, and if you caught one, it was $1,000,000!  Fished it every year but never got into the money, won a Lamiglas rod one year. Trolling in front of the Lockheed terminal was always good, as was the hole in front of Salty's.  Right at the Point was sometimes good.  I used to paddle my Chinook across the bay from the Don Ameche launch to Ivar's in the evening....a good workout.
One year I caught a 29# king the day before the Boeing Derby, would have been good for $500....
One important thing---the king bite in Elliott Bay is EARLY!  old saying goes, if you can see well enough to cut bait, you're too late.  I think mooching was invented by the old Tengu guys in the 30's, at least the term.  I remember an old guy name John Jutte (sp??) who fished in about a 10 foot green rowboat named "Kno Phish", he kept it at the marina and outfished everybody for  big kings.  He had a way to use the herring head as a spinner, so he got 2 baits per herring.  I wish I could remember how he hooked the head---it spun like a 30-30 bullet...he said it was more effective than the body.

On the 26th, there's a zero tide at 0600.

I think the "queen" and I will be there.  I am just figuring out how, I am thinking I might see if I can walk the kayaks on the ferry if it is not to far from the launch other wise we will drive around.  is it a cut plug/mooching spot only or do spoons like the coho killers work also?

I'd love to go if it weren't for that fact that I'd have to buy yet another license that I probably wouldn't use again....

Hick, mooching is the tradition, but a flasher/hoochie or flasher/coyote is productive after first light.

Is there any additional tags needed in addition to the $14.50 day license?

Looks like $1 or $3 for the Puget Sound enhancement stamp on the link. Check it out the previous post w/ link above.

Pretty sure I'll give it a go as well.  If you're gonna be fishing you may as well win a prize for it too!  ;) ;)
Any plans for which launch?  Remember, this should be a very early launch.

Well it looks like the Queen and I are not going to make it.  I had to run to the emergency room on sunday and had my gallbladder removed so I am not going to be fishing for 6 to 8 weeks....

DAng, that's a bummer!   Were you mooching or using hardware???

Yeah it was awesome to have a salmon of real size on. There were a lot of boats giving me some funny looks the whole morning. Then when I got the first fish on there was a lot of attention and  even a few boats rooting me on. Then when I lost it they were making fun. Pretty much the same the second time around. All in all I'd say it was a pretty good experience.

And I was using hardware. I was using what I call, the power hootchie!   >:D
