and the rules: http://aoty.northwestkayakanglers.com/ (http://aoty.northwestkayakanglers.com/)

Those two links should answer most of your questions. However, please speak up here if you have further questions/clarifications so that everyone can benefit. And you can PM me as well if you'd prefer to ask something privately.

There are no rule changes this year (a typo or two is all we changed).

I will be working with sponsors again this year, however I am trying to focus on depth instead of breadth with regard to the prizes, so we'll see how that goes.

If you won prizes for 2016 please post pictures on social media with your prizes and tag the vendor and NWKA - it will help us get prizes again this year.

I'll be signing my son Zach up for AOTY this year, he's 15. I noticed there are not many entry's for the youth division. This is probably a silly question, but is it safe to assume he can complete with the rest of us? Based on some of the fish he's caught in past years he has a good chance at doing really well, especially in the rockfish challenge.

As far as the youth division, I know some friends kids that will be signing up soon that will give him a good run for the money.  It would be nice to see more youth involved.

I'd be down to take my grandson, hopefully seeing other kids kayak fish will help him loose his fear of being on the kayak solo.

That would be great! Teenagers can be really capable paddlers! My buddy Skip ate it pretty hard in the surf and was separated from his kayak. It was Zach who was near him and pedaled over to rescue him out of the surf. Skip held onto the back of Zachs kayak while Zach brought Skip and his full waders to shore. Although I was really proud of the boy I'd like for him to get his own butt out of the surf. Tough to chew him out for doing the right thing.
A little off topic, but the point is there is no reason they shouldn't put the cellphones down and catch some fish! Chances are they are more athletic than most of us.

bSteves and I talked about this last year and what we came up with was this: If you have to have an adult license, then you're in the Main Event. If you don't have to have an adult license then you're in the Youth division. I can say that if a Youth division participant would benefit from their placing in the Main Event I would let them choose their prize (between the two).

*EDIT* If you have to have an adult license in your state of residence then you're in the Main Event.

All you have to do is sign up and fish?  You can win all of that for fishing!  It supports our Veterans (HOW)  I'm definitely going to have to get signed up.  You're doing a great job this year.  Thanks for putting this together again.

Thank you! It is a group effort with several other people contributing as well, and a small panel of judges to help keep entries flowing to the leaderboard.

Glad to see you're going to be back at it this year, mister 2016 3rd place!  :)

For the purposes of AOTY scoring are Spotted bass acceptable for the "Largemouth" category? I know they're not common in Oregon, but several lakes hold some.

I'll run it by the committee but I don't see any reason why those can't register under "largemouth".

Thanks! I would venture to guess most of us wouldn't be able to differentiate between the two without looking twice. Figured I would ask since it sounds like Cottage grove (OKBF) has a decent population of Spots from what I've read.

It gets even harder with spot/smallie hybrids.   >:D

For sure it does. Growing up fishing Lake Oroville and Shasta I have learned to identify them pretty well, but figured I would ask on the off chance I manage to catch one in permitted waters.

Wait a minute!  Oregon has a much larger population of Striped bass than we do of Kentucky bass, but stripers still don't count?

I've noticed that there are other fish being verified, but the one I submitted yesterday is not. Is there something wrong with my picture? I totally understand that it can take time. Just thinking since others are coming through maybe my pic isn't clear enough or something.

Just a quick note for anyone who comes across this later:

The fish don't necessarily get verified in the order they are submitted. There are several reasons for this but the primary one is that we have a pool of judges and each of us tends to have a geographic area we're most familiar with. For example I know Oregon regs pretty well so if I jump on and scan through I'll tend to only verify Oregon ones if I don't have extra time, because most of the time I don't have to look anything up.

Occasionally there are also questions about an entry and we either discuss or get in touch with the participant to ask for another picture or a clarifying question, etc.

So the main point is that it will get done eventually and as long as you submit your fish within the 2 week window it will count (all other things being equal) even if it takes us a while to get to.

That said, you are always welcome to message me to ask about an entry and I'll check it out for you as soon as I can.

Bump for more sponsors!

NEMRods is donating another custom salmon rod this year. If you're not sure how cool that is, check out these pictures of the 2016 rod that Rawkfish won (below). I love the NWKA and HOW logos!

I'm also excited to announce that ProCure is back on board as well to support our event! A lot of us have become devotees to their scents over time and I can truly say I no longer leave the dock without it on my ship.

Congratulations to all the hard fishing kayak anglers in this contest. I've been clinging to a spot in the top ten with a real low average (lots of little fish) for too long and I can see a number of folks now knocking at the door. Good luck to all.

Just an FYI folks - the AOTY leaderboard and fish entry pages may be down for a while.

KEEP FISHING! Take your photos, and there will be a plenty-sufficient grace period to get your entries in once everything is back up and running.

Please keep track of the dates and locations caught (modern phones and cameras should correctly set date/time metadata on the photo for you if you have the time set correctly, and depending on your settings some will record the GPS location as well).

I personally use many RAM Mounts products on my kayak including rod holders and a GPS mount and they've worked great.

It may take a day or two for you to be able to "see" the site from the base URL. You should be able to get to it from here either way:

Hey is it a hard rule that only fish that can be retained, can be used? Im planing on doing some catch and release for chum in the kilchis (open to fishing but closed to retention)

It is.  You have to be able to keep it for the fish to count in AOTY.

Head over to the WA side of the Columbia if you want some Chum AOTY points.

There is, I unfortunately don't know what it is though. You might try reducing the size and trying again.

Brown's are excluded primarily because of their absence from Alaska water. On the other hand Brookies would be a welcome addition as they are found across the entire region.

Ahem.  Species 11, 12, 21 and 22 aren't even found throughout Oregon, species 23 is threatened throughout Oregon, and I haven't heard of many folks in Idaho or Montana catching species 1 through 7 in their local waters lately.  Not complaining, just saying.
Title: Re: Angler of the Year 2017 (AOTY) - Kickoff and questions
Post by: uplandsandpiper on November 13, 2017, 07:18:17 AM
Gonna have to disagree with you Tinker. Oregon is far better poised for many of those species you mention than other states.

Species 11 & 12. I'll give you those two. Sockeye is pretty much a Washington north species and Pinks are pretty much Puget Sound north only.

Species 21. Nearly all of the large Mackinaw entered in the tournament come from central Oregon lakes likes Odell and Crescent. Most Washington and even B.C. lakes don't produce the 15+ lb fish that Oregon lakes do. The only exception in the region is Priest and most of those fish are now stunted from overpopulation.

Species 22. Grayling must be on here for the Alaska anglers exclusively. There is really only 1 real kayak accessible population in the lower 48 that allows harvest and that is in Montana. Not a single entry has been submitted since AOTY began.

Species 23. News flash Bull Trout are threatened throughout Washington too. However, I would bet 90%+ of the entries for this species come from Billy Chinook in central Oregon. There are only a handful of streams in Washington where you can legally retain Bull Trout and most of those are so small they are not kayakable. Only 1 lake in WA state allows retention of Dolly Varden and it isn't governed by the state.

There is a lot about AOTY that doesn't make sense. As you pointed out the species composition doesn't make sense. There are many species more cosmopolitan that are excluded whereas others that are geographically limited or have limited harvest opportunity are included.

Additionally, the tournament is heavily slanted to coastal anglers. It is way easier to score points in the ocean than on freshwater. Folks will argue that it takes more skill to catch those species than perch, panfish, or walleye but I completely disagree. Banging a chunk of lead on a reef and picking up Cabezon, lingcod, rockfish, and greenling all on the same lure isn't any more skilled than running a worm under a bobber for perch and panfish IMO. Additionally, the low scoring per inch on Yellow Perch and panfish handicaps these species whereas apparently anybody can catch a 200 pt Cabezon. For example, there are nearly 40 Cabezon over 200 points whereas not a single Yellow Perch or Panfish in excess of 175 pts has been submitted. In fact to catch a 200 pt Yellow Perch would mean you likely broke the world record!

In the history of the tournament there has only been one time where all freshwater took first place (2014 Snopro). That in itself is telling. I personally wanted to do it again this year so I'd have some sort of platform to argue for change. If the point of tournament is to get more people involved the rules should be altered to make it more attractive to inland anglers and more equitable scoring across species.

Weird.  On the Cabezon and freshwater Perch points, it's like USP was reading my mind.  There are other situations where things seem a little off and might need a small points correction but nothing as dramatic as Cabs and Perch.

The AOTY is always changing.  If you have something you think would make it more interesting, competitive, or enjoyable there will always be a thread where you can suggest things.  Making the contest more appealing to people and increasing participation would be awesome.

Some tweaks to the points could definitely be made for sure. If there's been no 200pt submissions then the points should be adjusted. Of course adjusting the points could lead to more participation in those fisheries as well, which could lead to a few 200pt submissions (not a bad thing.)

SnoPro's average is crazy. If/when he gets his 10th fish it's going to be a tough spot to beat.

For anyone who missed the discussion earlier, note that 100% of USP's catches are freshwater - that's a pretty amazing score regardless of rank!

On the chance my photos are too large (they're 220-330KB already scaled down from several MBs) what is the limit on file size for uploads?

My theory is that it's not a size restriction but a timeout of some kind. So in that case the size of image you can upload depends on your connection speed. I don't have any evidence for this other than just noticing that some places I can upload larger images than other places.

I want to give everyone an update on the Kayak Shed situation.

As most of you know, in September Kayak Shed suffered a devastating fire which basically destroyed the whole building. John Hart, the owner of Kayak Shed, has been a long-time supporter of HOW and other events and we've been proud to have him be the premier sponsor for AOTY.

John has let me know that in spite of the fire he is still intending to support our event. He is working out some options for what we might be able to provide for the first prize. It is likely that it will not be the prize package previously discussed.

I think it's representative of the experience most of us have had with John and the Kayak Shed that in spite of the turmoil I'm sure they're going through trying to forge a path forward after the fire that he's still looking for ways to support AOTY. So THANK YOU to Kayak Shed, and there's your update.

FISH ON!

Thanks Jed.  I hope to make it out for BCSIII and meet you in person.

AOTY 2017 was a good one.  I think many people had personal best scores and tons of PB fish.  I think if you averaged out the top ten finishers in 2017 it's probably the highest top ten average score ever.  Great job everyone.  I get the feeling many people are starting to dial in fisheries and I expect to see 2 or 3 people break 2000 for the first time in 2018.

Good luck everyone. Keep trying new gear, new spots, and new species.

Prize announcements coming soon and all that fun stuff.

DON'T FORGET THAT 2018 AOTY HAS ALREADY STARTED. Fish caught now will count as long as you sign up inside the grace period. I can't guarantee anything but I don't see any rule changes coming that would significantly affect your strategy this time of year.

Much like last year, January has turned out to be a very busy month for me. I am working on finalizing the details of the prizes and will be working on getting some things done on this in the next few days. Thank you for your patience!

2017 prize distribution is ON LIKE TRON  :banjo:

Look for messages in your PM box here on NWKA starting tomorrow, or proactively PM me your address if you're in the top 10 in the Main Event, or top spot in the side challenges, or top 3 in the Fly challenge.

EDIT: Also all of the Youth Division participants will be receiving prizes. I know most of them but if the parent of Gr8playz can PM me that would help, since I don't know who that is. Thanks!

EDIT 2: I realize you can't see all of the details in the picture but we have 4x $50 gift certs for RAM, $25 gift cert to ACK, a couple of rod holders, 2 gel seat cushions, a Lucid fish grip, a hand bilge, a t shirt, TONS of Big Hammer baits, $15 Cabela's gift cert, Lancer Jigs, track-mount cup holder, YakAttack track-mount paddle holders, Hoo-Rags, gear tracks, STORM baits, 2 hats, paddle leashes, drink koozie, and more. I can't wait to mail this stuff out!

Indeed.  Your efforts are greatly appreciated.  This stuff is fun to do but there's always background work and we appreciate it.

A HUGE thanks to islandson as well - he nearly doubled the prize pool with his contributions from various sources.

THANK YOU!
