Title: Sassy Feeder Springer
Post by: MurseStrong on July 02, 2018, 07:11:48 PM
She wins the Sassiest Springer fight of the year award, stripping 90ft of line and forcing me to chase her. Herring, 26ft line out. The herring was barely touched, hooked in the corner of the mouth & trailer hook in the gullet. Whole calamari in her belly & covered in sea lice; wife says she was the best tasting salmon.

Dang, that’s a hogess for sure! Beginning to wonder if the Columbia is the only water producing>5 lb fish. Nice job.

Trident this was actually at Pacific City. I thought I’d start the stoke for Ocean Salmon & wish all you guys the best of luck at the coast this week. They are out there anywhere from 35-135 fow feeding, putting on weight waiting for the rains. I’m looking forward to more pink fish porn as things are just heating up! It’s been June Hawg heaven from the Willamette to the coast. With tight regulations in the rivers this year, the salt may be a much more productive option. .

Wow! I might need to rethink my travels this weekend, I've yet to make it to PC but maybe it's time for another trip south. She isn't a football, she looks like she ATE one though.

Launched with a great crew at one of the most beautiful sunrises I’ve experienced at PC. It’s heating up. 50f at the beach, I trolled to 145-175 fow, 54f, and went 2/3 in coho including an angry chinook that I just couldn’t tame. Fish on my friends & Happy 4th!!

It was an Epic day for everyone. Left my house at 2:30am to meet Matt & Onefish at PC & launch by 5am. A few minutes into the troll my new Lamiglas XCC 1064 starts tapping & I wait and watch in amazement as every inch of that rod loaded up before burying into the salt. With a 20+lb nook in my ice bag, it didn’t stop there. Double digit acrobatic coho fights to find a hatchery. Most of the coho are coming in FAT at 10-13 lbs.
Water temp was 50 at the beach & never changed more than a degree or so. We found a crazy coho bite from 140-170 FOW. We found success with herring, spinners, & hoochie spinners. It’s one of those days; grateful you didn’t hit that snooze button. Trust your gut instead of chasing perfect reports or forecasts. Don’t take the wife’s “NO” for an answer but push for a compromise to make it happen. Today is a day we can all remember & only hope to repeat. Carpe Diem.

Fred it was a pleasure to finally meet you.
Finding bait & rips proved effective with anywhere from 24-30 ft line out. The Chinook had 3 full calamari in its mouth when she took her last breath. With that said, this little pink home made hoochie spinner was the hot lure & accounted for 7 of the 12 fish I hooked, including a Jack chinook. She went 32”x22”

If you’re not getting bit, try this start reeling up or letting line out while still trolling with the rod in the holder;)

Today I blasted past the PC surf on a mission to get out & back to Portland by noon with a limit. I only had to hit the 120 FOW line to get into a pod of BIG coho! I bit my lip as I quickly headed in past lingcod territory without even dropping a line. Nonetheless a quick limit, amazing acrobatic fights and freight train bites. A single 12 lb coho will feed over 15 people! Get after them there are s lot of salmon feeding in the ocean right now.

I like to scale my coho before I filet them, especially with these ocean coho full of silver scales. You end up with a better product that can’t be beat in a cedar plank of just grilled skin side down. If you do grill on a cedar plank make sure you grill the plank before you place the fish on it to cook. Fish on!

Awesome Hugh!  Damn, I'm kicking myself for not going out today.  Conditions down south were nicer than the forecast.

10-12 pound coho in July?  Awww yeah!  :o

Hey Hugh,

Thanks for the great tips.  I like that homemade Hoochie spinner.  what type of hook(s) do you run behind it?

Great Job, Hugh!!  Those are some chunky coho.  Glad you were rewarded with salmon and a safe trip - the Lings are glad you didn't stop!

Hey Hugh,

This hoochie spinner setup can be ran above a herring/anchovy mooching rig or alone as is using from  size 1 to size 3/0 hooks. This is just a basic setup that’s adaptable to many setups. In the rivers I’m running it behind a Leo’s 360 flasher with a size 3 or 4 Gamagatsu treble hook. Those size hooks may seem small but I like a light weight small spinner with a lot of action. Small spinnners catch big salmon;) its the action in how ya troll it that sometimes makes all the difference.

I’d also like to point out that I’m still waiting for Onefish to chime in & disclose some of his secrets. At least twice a week that guy is silently depleting the PC fish population but he never shares how he does it not even when you fish with him ???

Thanks Hugh.  I'm looking to get out there this weekend, provided the surf and waves lay down.

How do you run this above a herring?  Is it like adding a shrimp fly to a botttom fishing rig?  I did not know people tolled two setups.  Could not imagine a double lol

I can't speak specifically for how Hugh sets up his baits, but a common practice with spinners and hootchies is to simply have them running on the leader line directly above the hooks.  The Rogue River Bait Rig is an example of this.  You're still fishing with only one bait.  It's just "enhanced" with the addition of a spinner and/or hootchie.

First on the water before daylight, I trolled south of the rock onto a beautiful rip line with a ton of birds, bait, and a breaching whale. My heart was racing with anticipation & soon I watched my rod tip dance before dipping. Game on! I heard a slash behind me with strange pulsing on the line. I reel in a pissed off puffin that gave me a hell of a fight after ruining my best herring :angryfire:
It wasn’t long before 30+ boats showed up & we all trolled all the beautiful rips that formed around the rock throughout the morning. I lost one chinook that stripped my herring & missed the hooks.
The bites were few far between & sporadic. Water temp was 55 at the beach, 56.4 at the rock, and 57.6 out at the 120 ft line. In effort to escape the crowd I went out to 100ft & found a quick coho bite going 2/4.
Most of the boats had given up on Chinook at this point so I went back to the grind chasing rips near the rock. Fisherman’s has really shitty herring, Jerry’s Bait, and I was not impressed with what I had left. I threw on the best of my bunch & found myself in a long fight with a burley buck. He had a greenish bronze hue but cut extremely red. The left ventral fin looks like a misclip or a regeneration, so maybe a Rogue river hatchery strain IDK.
He went 36x23. His stomach contents were very impressive. The “last supper”  from right to left, with my herring as dessert.

Nice Piggy!  Not that it helps the day of, but nestucca adventures has some really good quality herring right now.  Pt Defiance Bait Co I think.

Fish on!!
