HOW TO SIGN UP
- (If you have participated before you do not need to sign up again.)
- Go to http://aoty.northwestkayakanglers.com/ (http://aoty.northwestkayakanglers.com/)
- Click the "Sign Up" button and follow the instructions.
- If the state where you live does not require you to buy an adult angling license yet, you are Youth. Otherwise you are not.
- Signing up does not mean you are done! (See below)
HOW TO DONATE
We have changed the donation method this year to streamline things and get the most money possible to HOW. We hope to improve this further for next year, but for now this is the plan:
- Donate directly to the HOW chapter of your choice by going here: https://heroesonthewater.z2systems.com/np/clients/heroesonthewater/survey.jsp?surveyId=1& (https://heroesonthewater.z2systems.com/np/clients/heroesonthewater/survey.jsp?surveyId=1&)
- Please donate $50 or more. (We did not intend to increase the cost of entry but the donate page for the chapters does not have a $40 option. If the extra $10 is a financial hardship for you please PM me and I'll work it out.)
- PM me a screenshot of your receipt that clearly shows the date (or a redacted screenshot if you prefer). If you need to email instead please send me a PM and I will give you my email address.Include your AOTY screen name! (I don't know all of you, even though I try, and also I'm horrible with names.)
- if you want to enter fish caught January 1 - January 24, 2019 you have until February 7, 2019 to donate and notify me. Otherwise the usual rules apply.
- Give me a couple of days to activate you.
NEW SPECIES
Some of the front-row students have noticed that we've added two freshwater species. Well, actually, they're both available in saltwater as well.
- Striper/Wiper @ 5.25 pts/in - Includes striped bass (Morone saxatilis) and hybrid striped bass (Morone saxatilis X M. chrysops)
- American Shad @ 7.0 pts/in - (Alosa sapidissima)
POINTS UPDATES
After careful consideration we've updated the points for panfish and yellow perch:
- Panfish: 14.0 pts/in
- Yellow Perch: 13.5 pts/in
GENERAL INFO
If you are interested in Angler of The Year but aren't sure what it's all about, check out previous years' threads and the AOTY home page:

It's a great way to measure yourself against the all-time greats. (There is currently an issue with fish of the same species and length, we're working on it.)

When can we sign up for AOTY '19? On the main page the sign up still says for 2018. Does it rollover/update on the 1st?

Great question! I'm working that out right now. I'll get an update ASAP.
We always give you 2 weeks grace at the beginning of the year, so if we don't have the payment stuff sorted out you can start fishing January 1, and we'll honor your catches if you pay up by the 14th of January.
-
Would I be able to pay today for 2019? Or should I wait until the 1st?
-
Would I be able to pay today for 2019? Or should I wait until the 1st?
It should work out, yes. Normally I'd just say "no problem, yes!" but we're changing the payment details a little this year (just who collects the money, not the cost to enter or anything that affects participants directly). So until we get that sorted out I don't want to open the flood gates. But if you need to do it today we'll work it out, yes.
-
Will the committee be changing the eligible fish this year? Still waiting for striped bass to show up on the list...
-
There aren't any plans to add striped bass.
-
Thanks again for heading this up Redbeard!! Let me know if you need a hand with anything...

You're welcome, and thank you!

Aw, come on, that deserves a "Sorry" at least.
-
I look forward to competing for AOTY 2019!
I read thru the rules a couple times and still have one question: is only 1 entry per species required? Or can I submit multiple entries for a single species and have the largest entry count towards points?
-
can I submit multiple entries for a single species and have the largest entry count towards points?
Yes. Upgrading is common.
-
I dont see any payment method/option on the AOTY site. How do I enroll??
-

You can start fishing now, just keep track of your entries. We are considering some changes to the payment method and it may take some time to work out the details. We will honor fish caught from Jan 1 until the time a payment option becomes available (plus a little grace period) for people who register then.
Keep looking back here for news - we're working on it - and fish on!

Donation info available in the top post!

Thanks Lauren,
I really like the new setup...
1.) Direct donation to HOW.. cuts out the middle man (i.e. me) and allows people who can take itemized deductions to deduct this donation for themselves.
2.) HOW should see a spike in activity from the Pacific Northwest area. Granted they won't get that big check all at once from NWKA at the end of the year, but sometimes having more in smaller donations is better for non-profits.
3.) Increased points for panfish.
4.) Shad! --- I jokingly asked for tarpon... but I'll take these micro-versions. It's a really underrated fishery that more people should take advantage of. I'd love to see some Umpqua shad reports this year. They make great sport, great bait, and they taste great smoked and canned.
5.) Youth AOTY... if you have a kid, take them kayak fishing and enter them into the youth AOTY. It's free with your adult AOTY registration and a great way to get kids interested in the sport. Also someone needs to knock my son Owen off the AOTY thrown for once.
-
Thanks Brian, and thank you for all that you do for AOTY! For those of you who don't know, Brian authored and rebuilt the entire AOTY system and he's the guy I bother with questions. We wouldn't be doing this without him.
I will modify the top post, but another note: THE GRACE PERIOD ENDS FEBRUARY 7. You have 2 weeks from now to get registered if you want to enter fish that were caught before now.
-
Hdpwipmonkey has entered the first fish of 2019 with a hefty greenling. Good luck everyone.
-
Best of luck everyone! Looking forward to some awesome fish being posted up.
-
I've signed up again although I'm not sure why, unless it's just my quest for even tinier fish.

Reclaim your Tiny Fish crown! Best of luck.

Woah! There's a tiny fish crown? I'm in on that one. Maybe my talent of catching fish smaller than the lure that I'm using will finally come in handy! ;D

For 2018 there was a tiny trophy, a prize bag including a gift cert for Outdoorplay, and other goodies. Get in on it!

Just want to wish everyone good luck this year. I'm going to fish harder and try to place a little higher this year so watch out ;) As an added incentive to sign up and fish, I will be throwing down a special prize for the 2019 winner. Looking in to a couple of things but I guarantee it will be pretty cool, you will want to win it. Hope to see you guys on the water. jed

Bring it 😜
-
I'm seeing a lot of new user names coming through - I love it! Apologies if it takes me a day or two to get you set up - I'll try to do it within a couple of days in most cases. Don't let that keep you from fishing! The date on your HOW donation is your start date, regardless of when I make it official.
-
Thank you to those who have been posting their prizes up on social media - much appreciated!

Question about the Tiny Fish Slam...How are the points calculated? I have a different point total for the tiny fish than I do the overall board, with the same two fish. Curious is all.

If I remember correctly it is 200 points - your entry points = tiny fish points.
There may be some filtering for excluding fish that are over 200 points or something like that as well.
-
A flurry of nice fishing being posted with some changes at the top. With the great weather I have a feeling next week will see many fish posted Hopefully some halibut! Good luck everyone.
-
It’s to see that there will be some great competition again this year! I’ve been stuck working on the house the past few weeks. We are hoping to finish up and get it listed by the end of the month. Hopefully I’ll gain some ground when I can finally get out on the water.

Please welcome aboard Fin and Fire fly shop in Redmond, OR, who will be sponsoring our Fly Fishing division this year! They have donated a $25 gift card.
They are a full service fly shop and additionally have hunting gear, Traeger grills, and 36 taps serving microbrews, cider, and kombucha - isn't that reason enough to stop by? ;D
Their website looks great and they have local fishing information - check it out.
-
The King and Queen of BCS IV are making a move up the ranks. It's worth checking out Ashley's Bull Trout. Great fish and a prime example of what they should look like in a healthy population. We're really fortunate to have a trophy fishery like this in the PNW.
Shad are going crazy over Bonneville! It's a good time to anchor up in a lane and spend a morning or afternoon upgrading AOTY points and gathering crab/sturgeon/halibut/ling bait. Bring the kids.

Stopped by there this weekend. Awesome shop and great beer selection. ! Also caught a nice rainbow from the fly of the crooked river.

New sponsor on board! Check out Gator Guards. Justin did a write-up a while back of his experience using them. Word is it's working great.

Our good friends at Lancer Jigs will be sending some jigs to give away again this year. They are always so supportive of AOTY and happy to help. I just put in a big order myself to replenish our stocks at home.

If you haven't checked out their website in a while give it a look - new jig sizes and a fresh new website facelift!

Fall update. Jed moved into first with a stout wiskerfish. Casey is only 10.5 back. Rolling into November the lead should change back and forth as they both post upgrades. It should be an exciting finish to AOTY 2019.
-
Ah sweet! I love the last leg! Best of luck to everyone - tight lines, and keep safe as the temps drop.
-
It's gotten downright exciting at the top lately!
-
Agreed. Ive been following pretty closely and am excited to see how it turns out. Both are really good guys and deserve the win. Maybe they will tie?
-
Casey has been catching some nice ones lately and is a new member of the AOTY 2k club!. Jed is very close. If he can find a 1.25 point upgrade Casey can show him the secret 2k handshake. ;)
Have a fun December guys.

Thank you! It’s been really fun. Jed is pushing me hard by being such great competition. I’m in no way comfortable and will not stop until the 1st. If only I could stop showing up to work until then!
Also, once Jed gets over the 2k mark he should wait a full 14 days to learn the hand shake since he’s so used to waiting a couple weeks 😜

BKG just entered a beast of a walleye. The big girl is definitely worth a look.

Just amazing, congrats to all of the competitors!
-
Love seeing it come down to the wire like that.
Please remember that, per the rules, contestents have 2 weeks to submit entries, so we won't know the whole story until Jan 14.
In the meantime please feel free to fish for AOTY2020 and I'll get a new thread up for that ASAP.
-
Also, while we're at it...
Now is the time to look over your place on the leaderboard. Does it look right? Are there points you think aren't being counted properly? Let us now and we can take a look and potentially fix things. For example, the old "I have two fish with the same score and my total doesn't add up properly!" bug has been mostly fixed, but there are certain conditions where it can flare up.

Don't look for any more entries from me. After losing a sizable walleye at the net last week, I'm done. I think I woke up half of Pasco when it popped off and just sat there in the beam of my headlamp
Congrats to Casey on the win and to all of the competitors that fished in 2019. Enjoyed fishing with new anglers again this year and look forward to fishing with everyone in 2020.
It was fun fishing for new and different species that I thought required electronics to target. The craziest was night trolling for walleye on the Columbia and not having any idea what the depth was, speed or bottom structure. Hahaha. The funnest was getting hammered by huge Lake trout on the blind. I'm also pretty stoked to have caught 7 of my top 10 fish on ultra light tackle.
Good luck to everyone in 2020 (if there is an AOTY) and I'll see you on the water.

Jed, you never cease to amaze me. From using 4lb test and no electronics to almost pulling off a win. Congrats to Casey. You guys cracked me up with your dedication towards the final stretch. Hopefully you can get out there and enjoy fishing again. :)

We'll have to plan another trip for this year. Maybe go back down and piss Dean off some more :D

Much gratitude to all the sponsors and the competitors that grappled for supremacy and supported Heroes On the Water in the process.
Congrats Casey!

Alright, the 14th has come and gone. As he has time, bsteves will archive the leaderboard and all of that, and we'll get everything set up for 2020.
THANK YOU to everyone who has already sent me your receipts. I will activate you as soon as we archive 2019! Fish hard, and your entries will be counted as long as they were caught on or after the day you made your donation.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and I'll get to it more later, but CONGRATS TO CASEY ON A WELL-EARNED VICTORY AGAINST EXCELLENT COMPETITION!

Thanks for the hospitality. Such a great lake. I have an Oregon license now. Time for another road trip

2019 is officially closed and archived. Wrap-up post and prizes coming soon.
-
So are we able to announce Casey as the official winner? If so- when's the party? If we dont have a party planned or get together than we should for future events! Would be fun to plan a get together with all those who competed/followed along on line.
-
Sorry, yeah, I need to get a wrap-up post put together. I was sick all last week pretty much and behind on everything now. I'll get to it this weekend, probably.
I love the idea of parties/events, I just don't want to be the one to plan them. Please feel free to jump in and organize something.
I'm going to make a big deal out of it in the wrap-up post, but Casey's 2019 was really spectacular and worthy of celebration. That's not to diminish anyone else's achievements over the years, but the dude won AOTY, AOTD, and the ORC all in the same year. It's the triple-crown of PNW kayak fishing!

I did not mean to push you specifically just curious. You have done so much for AOTY and your support/help has been amazing through the years!
Yes- Casey did have quite the year. He also won the Brownlee Crapee shootout in 2018. I dont think there has been anyone else to have such a strong year- Win AOTY, ORC (Including BigFish), AOTD, BCS 2018 and landing a monster halibut! Major Props to Casey- Camp CHAMP CHAMP CHAMP CHAMP BigFish
